True freedom is bondage to Hashem alone

On the pasuk: "Cursed is Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be" (Bereishis 9:25).

The Sefas Emes opens with Noach's curse upon Canaan, contrasting it with the bracha given to Shem, in order to define the true nature of bracha and curse.

"Blessed is Hashem, the God of Shem…" — for the essence of bracha is the aspect of cheirus (freedom), that one not be enslaved beneath anything.

True blessing is freedom: not being subjugated under any created force, but standing directly under Hashem alone.

For the Holy One, Blessed is He, created the world to be governed level by level — serafim and ofanim and angels and spheres, and likewise in this world, kings and servants.

Hashem fashioned a layered order in which each rung is ruled by the one above it, both in the upper worlds and in the hierarchies of olam hazeh.

But in truth His kingship rules over all, and no creature escapes from beneath His dominion, as it is written, "and Your dominion is in every generation" (Tehillim 145:13).

Beneath all the intermediate levels stands the deeper truth: nothing lies outside Hashem's direct rule. The whole hierarchy is only an outer garment over His total malchus.

And this is the essence of freedom, as it is written, "I am Hashem your God, who took you out of the land of Mitzrayim, from the house of bondage" (Shemos 20:2).

To be bound directly to Hashem is itself the true cheirus; this is why redemption from Mitzrayim is framed as Hashem taking us out of the "house of bondage" to place us under Him alone.

The world of nature is called "the house of bondage."

Living under the rule of teva (nature) as if it were an independent power is itself a form of slavery — the "house of bondage."

But the tzaddikim are drawn after the higher Divine governance, and therefore they are bnei chorin (free people) — and this is by the power of emunah, that they know that the Holy One, Blessed is He, rules and conducts everything; and this is the essence of bracha, to be drawn after the Root of all roots, which is the source and wellspring of all blessings. And this is the testimony of Shabbos, of which it is written, "and He blessed the seventh day" (Bereishis 2:3), for in it there is a revelation of malchus Shomayim (the Kingship of Heaven), as it is written, "for in six days Hashem made the heavens and the earth" (Shemos 20:11) — for during the weekdays everything is clothed in nature.

Tzaddikim bind themselves to Hashem's direct conduct rather than to nature, and through emunah they become truly free. To cleave to the "Root of all roots" is the real bracha. Shabbos testifies to this: it is "blessed" because on it malchus Shomayim shines openly, whereas through the six weekdays Hashem's hand is hidden within the garment of nature.

As it is written, "the gate of the inner court that faces eastward shall be closed the six working days" (Yechezkel 46:1) — this is the inner point (nekudah penimiyus) that raises everything back to its Root; this is "that which faces eastward (kadim)."

The prophet's eastward-facing gate hints at the penimiyus, the inner point within creation that lifts all things back to their Source. "Kadim" (east) alludes to the primordial Root — "kadmon" — toward which this inner point turns.

And during the working days it is closed.

Through the six weekdays this inner gateway is shut, hidden behind the workings of nature.

And nature rules.

During the week it appears as though teva is in command, since the inner point is concealed.

But on the day of Shabbos it is opened.

On Shabbos that inner gate swings open, and the penimiyus that elevates all things to their Root is revealed.

Therefore we say, "Those who keep Shabbos shall rejoice in Your kingship," for on it malchus Shomayim is revealed; and it is testimony over all of creation that everything is under the supreme Hashgachah (Divine providence). And this is revealed only to the tzaddikim, who are the keepers of Shabbos, who yearn and wait for the revelation of malchus Shomayim — and this is "I am Hashem your God," that He singled out His kingship upon us with no separating screen.

Shabbos publicly bears witness that all of creation is governed by Hashem's hashgachah. This revelation is granted to those who long for it — the tzaddikim and shomrei Shabbos — for whom Hashem's malchus rests upon them directly, with no "masach mavdil" (intervening barrier) of nature.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael are called bnei chorin (free), even though they are in galus.

Even amid exile, Bnei Yisrael remain inwardly free, because their freedom does not depend on outer circumstances but on their bond with Hashem.

For the emunah is fixed within them that everything is under the supreme Hashgachah.

Their unshakable faith that Hashem alone governs all is the source of their inner cheirus, no matter how confining the galus.

But of Canaan it is written "a servant of servants," as is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh: one who removes himself from the shade of emunah (tzela d'mehemnusa) is fit to become a servant to servants of servants.

Canaan is the opposite of the free Jew: by casting himself out from beneath the "shade of faith," he subjugates himself to the lowest rungs of the created order — the deepest slavery.

For even within servitude there is an "eved maskil" (an understanding servant).

Yet even a servant can be wise — and that wisdom transforms his very servitude.

That is, he understands the root of servitude — that everything is under His kingship, may He be blessed, as it is written, "Your kingdom is a kingdom of all worlds" (Tehillim 145:13) — and through this he merits freedom.

The wise servant grasps that all subjugation is ultimately only subjugation to Hashem. Once a person serves with the awareness that he stands under the King of all worlds, that very servitude becomes cheirus.

But Canaan is "a servant of servants."

Lacking that awareness, Canaan remains enslaved to the levels of creation themselves rather than to Hashem — a servant of servants, with no portion in true freedom.

Summary: The essence of bracha is cheirus — freedom from subjugation to any created power, achieved by binding oneself, through emunah, directly to Hashem, the Root of all roots. Hashem rules the world through layered levels, but in truth nothing escapes His malchus. Shabbos testifies to this: its inner "gate" opens to reveal Hashem's hidden kingship behind the garment of nature. Thus Bnei Yisrael stay bnei chorin even in galus, for their faith is fixed. Canaan, who casts himself from the shade of emunah, becomes "a servant of servants" — yet even a servant who recognizes that all is under Hashem's kingship turns his servitude itself into freedom.
