Freedom Revealing Hidden Miracles

Beshalach · תרמ"א (1880) · Essay 1

It has already been stated elsewhere regarding the matter of the splitting of the Sea.

The Sefat Emet begins by noting that he has previously explained the spiritual dynamics of the Splitting of the Sea.

For during the exodus from Egypt, the Children of Israel were affected.

At the moment of leaving Egypt, Israel was still entangled in the spiritual residue of enslavement.

Because they had been in the distress of Egypt.

The suffering and constriction of exile still clung to them.

Therefore they did not fully follow after the illumination of the miracles.

They could not yet absorb the divine light revealed through the miracles of the exodus.

But at the Splitting of the Sea, when they were already free people, they received the illumination of the miracles.

Once liberated, they were spiritually open and capable of receiving the full force of divine revelation.

And this is the meaning of “They believed in the Lord,” and afterward they understood retroactively all the divine guidance.

The miracle of the Sea awakened faith that allowed them to reinterpret their entire journey, seeing God’s hand even in earlier suffering.

That their entire descent into Egypt had also been for the good.

This deeper insight revealed that even exile served a redemptive purpose.

“And they saw … the great hand that the Lord performed in Egypt”—this refers to both the exile and the redemption.

The “great hand” encompasses the unified divine act that includes both downfall and deliverance.

And then it was fitting to sing the Song.

Only with this full understanding could Israel rise to the spiritual level of singing the Song at the Sea.

Summary: Israel could not fully receive the miracle-light during the exodus because they were still bound by the constriction of Egypt. At the Sea, now truly free, they absorbed the divine illumination, which enabled them to understand all prior events as purposeful and good, culminating in the song of redemption.
