Servants of Hashem in essence, never enslaved

On the pasuk "For unto Me are Bnei Yisrael servants; they are My servants" (Vayikra 25:55).
The Sefas Emes examines the doubled "servants… My servants," reading the two phrases as two distinct stages.
Based on the Mishnah: "Whoever accepts upon himself the yoke of Torah, they remove from him the yoke of government (ol malchus)" — as the Zohar on this parsha says, "one who is bound to another cannot accept the yoke of the kingship of Heaven."
The Mishnah (Avos 3:5) promises that accepting the yoke of Torah lifts the yoke of worldly powers. The Zohar adds the principle: you cannot truly take on the yoke of Shomayim while still bound in servitude to something else.
And in the aforementioned Mishnah, "they remove" implies that it is removed even while he is still under the yoke of government.
The Mishnah's word "remove" suggests the person was already under a worldly yoke when he accepted Torah — which seems to contradict the Zohar's rule.
And therefore both are true: that he cannot accept the yoke of Torah completely, yet even so, through the fact that he accepts upon himself and desires to become a servant to the Torah of Hashem, they remove it from him.
The Sefas Emes reconciles them: at first one cannot fully accept the yoke of Torah while still bound below. But the very desire and willingness to subjugate oneself to Torah is enough to begin lifting the worldly yoke.
And then the acceptance can be as it should be.
Only once the worldly yoke is lifted can the acceptance of Torah's yoke become complete and proper.
And this is the meaning of "For unto Me are Bnei Yisrael servants" — that they desire to be servants of Hashem — and afterward "they are My servants" is fulfilled in actual practice.
The first phrase is the desire to serve Hashem; the second is its fulfillment in deed. The doubling traces the movement from wanting to serve to actually being His servant.
However, it can further be said that at yetzias Mitzrayim Bnei Yisrael became servants of Hashem in their very essence.
The Sefas Emes adds a deeper layer: at the Exodus, being a servant of Hashem became part of the essential nature of every Jew, not merely a chosen commitment.
And it is no longer possible to throw off, chas v'shalom, His kingship, so as to be called "bound to another."
Since the servitude is now essential, a Jew can never truly cast off Hashem's malchus and become bound to any other master.
And this happened at yetzias Mitzrayim, that we went out from under the hand of being servants of Pharaoh to become servants of Hashem.
The Exodus was precisely a transfer of ownership: from slaves of Pharaoh to servants of Hashem, sealing this essential bond.
And surely these matters are a kal va-chomer: if one who is bound to another cannot accept the kingship of Heaven, how much more so one who has accepted the yoke of Heaven cannot be enslaved to the sitra achra.
The Sefas Emes flips the Zohar's principle: just as worldly bondage blocks acceptance of Heaven's yoke, so accepting Heaven's yoke makes enslavement to the forces of impurity impossible.
And regarding the whole of Yisrael, who accepted the yoke of Heaven completely at yetzias Mitzrayim, they no longer enter into bondage.
Since Klal Yisrael accepted the yoke of Heaven completely at the Exodus, on an essential level they can never again fall into true enslavement.
And even though they are in galus, it is not in their essence.
The exile touches only the surface; in their essence Bnei Yisrael remain free servants of Hashem, never essentially enslaved.
And therefore, whenever they return to Him in teshuvah, their essence becomes clarified — "they are My servants," for My document (shtar) precedes.
Teshuvah does not create the bond but reveals it: it clarifies the essential servitude that was always there, for Hashem's "claim" — His prior shtar from the Exodus — comes before any later master. (The Gemara teaches that Hashem's earlier deed of ownership takes precedence.)
Summary: The doubled "servants… My servants" traces two stages. First, the mere desire to subjugate oneself to Torah already lifts the yoke of worldly powers, enabling a full acceptance to follow. Deeper still, at yetzias Mitzrayim Bnei Yisrael became servants of Hashem in their very essence — transferred from Pharaoh's ownership to Hashem's — so they can never truly cast off His kingship or be enslaved to the sitra achra. Galus touches only the surface, not the essence; and every return in teshuvah simply clarifies the essential servitude that Hashem's prior claim established at the Exodus.
