On the verse, "These are the reckonings (pekudei) of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of Testimony (mishkan ha'eidus), which were counted at the word of Moshe..." (Shmos 38:21).

The Sefas Emes opens with the verse calling the Mishkan a "Mishkan of Testimony" and noting it was reckoned by Moshe's word.

Rashi explains: "Testimony" — that the Holy One, blessed is He, forgave them (vitter lahem) for the sin of the Eigel (Golden Calf).

According to Rashi, the Mishkan testifies that Hashem pardoned Bnei Yisrael for the cheit ha'eigel by causing His presence to dwell among them.

And behold, the "eidus" (testimony) is the Torah, as it is written, "the Luchos of Testimony (luchos ha'eidus)."

The "testimony" fundamentally refers to the Torah, as the Tablets are called "Luchos of Testimony."

And it is the "adornment" (adi) that Bnei Yisrael received at Har Sinai.

The Torah is the spiritual crown or ornament that Bnei Yisrael were given at Sinai.

And after the sin it is written, "And Bnei Yisrael stripped themselves of their adornment (ed'yam)" (Shmos 33:6).

Through the sin of the Eigel, Bnei Yisrael lost that crown — they were stripped of the adornment received at Sinai.

"And Moshe would take the tent (ohel)" — Chazal expounded on this that Moshe Rabbeinu merited them all and took them; Rashi explains "ha'ohel" from the expression "when His lamp shone (behilo nero)" (Iyov 29:3).

Moshe alone retained the crowns the people forfeited; the word "ohel" is linked to radiant light, alluding to the shining light of Torah that Moshe preserved.

And this is the light of Torah, about which it is written "engraved (charus) upon the Luchos" — [read as] "cheirus" (freedom) — that the light of Torah rested upon Bnei Yisrael in open revelation.

Before the sin, the Torah's light shone openly and revealed upon Bnei Yisrael; "charus" (engraved) is read "cheirus" (freedom), signaling this elevated state.

And it is called "cheirus" (freedom) because it was above time and nature.

This revealed Torah-light is called "freedom" precisely because it transcended the constraints of time and the natural order.

Therefore, before the sin, there was no need for an aron (ark) or a [fixed] place for the Luchos, as is also stated in the sefer Ohr HaChaim.

Since the Torah-light then transcended place, no physical ark or location was required to "house" it.

And through the sin they fell from this level.

The cheit ha'eigel caused Bnei Yisrael to descend from that transcendent state.

And it is written, "And Moshe would take... and he called it the Ohel Moed (Tent of Meeting)."

After the fall, Moshe's tent is now named "Ohel Moed" — a name connected to fixed times (moed).

The Zohar HaKadosh explains that he made for it a fixed time (zimna); see there.

"Ohel Moed" implies that the holiness now appeared only at appointed times, no longer constantly.

For the kedushah was now present only at designated times.

After the sin, the Torah's holiness rested only at specific, bounded times rather than continuously.

And likewise a Mishkan was now needed, where this testimony could be revealed.

Just as the holiness became bound to time, it now also needed a fixed place — the Mishkan — in order to be revealed.

As I have stated elsewhere, that there are the aspects of olam (space/world), shanah (time/year), and nefesh (soul).

The Sefas Emes invokes the threefold framework of space, time, and soul that structures all of existence.

And the aspect of cheirus (freedom) is above all of these.

The original revealed Torah-light, "cheirus," transcended all three dimensions of space, time, and soul.

Therefore now it is written "Mishkan of Testimony" — the aspect of olam (space) and place.

The Mishkan now anchors the testimony in the dimension of space, since the holiness could no longer remain placeless.

"Which was counted at the word of Moshe" — who was the aspect of nefesh (soul), above all of Bnei Yisrael.

Moshe corresponds to the "nefesh" dimension, standing above all Bnei Yisrael as the soul of the nation.

And it is called "Ohel Moed," as above, in [the dimension of] time.

The name "Ohel Moed" anchors the holiness in the dimension of time, completing the triad of space, time, and soul.

And this is "that He forgave them for the deed of the Eigel."

The very existence of the Mishkan, with the Shechinah dwelling within these dimensions, is the testimony that Hashem forgave the sin.

For through the sin this testimony could not be revealed.

The sin had blocked the revelation of the Torah's testimony, severing the open connection.

And it was rectified through teshuvah — the place of the Mishkan, where the testimony could be revealed there.

Through teshuvah, Bnei Yisrael repaired the breach, and the Mishkan became the place where the Torah's testimony could once again be revealed — proof of Hashem's forgiveness.

Summary: The "Mishkan of Testimony" testifies that Hashem forgave the sin of the Eigel. The "testimony" is the Torah, the crown received at Sinai whose light first shone openly and freely ("cheirus"), above time, place, and the natural order — so no ark or fixed location was needed. The sin caused a fall from that level, after which the Torah's holiness could be revealed only within space (the Mishkan), time (Ohel Moed), and soul (Moshe). Through teshuvah, the Mishkan was established as the place where this testimony could shine again, proving Hashem's pardon.
