Nature Changed for Israel
“In the verse: ‘This month shall be for you.’”
The Sefat Emet opens by addressing the meaning of the verse that introduces the mitzvah of sanctifying the new month.
For the Holy One, blessed be He, changed all of nature during the Exodus for the sake of the Children of Israel.
The miraculous events of the Exodus demonstrate that God is willing to overturn the natural order for Israel’s sake.
And in truth, this was a testimony about the Creator, blessed be He, that He is the Creator and acts according to His will.
The suspension of nature serves as a proof of God’s absolute sovereignty.
And it was also a testimony about Israel, that the entire world was created for them.
The miracles affirm Israel’s central role in creation.
Therefore, for their sake, God changed nature.
The miraculous events were not random but purposeful, tied to Israel’s mission.
For God could have redeemed us through natural means.
Miracles were not necessary for redemption—they served a deeper teaching purpose.
But the entire exile was to clarify that the Holy One alters His world for Israel.
Exile and redemption together reveal God’s relationship with Israel.
And it is possible that the Exodus was a testimony about Israel.
The Exodus emphasized Israel’s spiritual stature.
And the splitting of the Sea was a testimony about the Creator.
The Sea’s splitting highlighted God’s incomparable power.
For Israel had already been redeemed, but the Sea was split for the sake of His Name.
The second miracle emphasized God’s glory, not Israel’s rescue.
Therefore Moses sang: “Exceedingly exalted is He.”
The Song at the Sea celebrates God’s majesty.
And the Exodus was for our sake; therefore it says “This month shall be for you,” for through you this path of miracles was renewed.
The renewal of the calendar symbolizes the renewal of a relationship defined by miracles.
And we have already written in the name of my grandfather, of blessed memory, that although it says “There is nothing new under the sun,” Israel, who transcend nature through self‑sacrifice, merit renewal.
Spiritual self‑transcendence opens the door to divine renewal beyond nature.
Therefore it is written, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and might,” and afterward, “These words… I command you today,” meaning as if new.
Love and devotion enable Torah to feel ever-new.
And this is sufficient for the wise.
A traditional closing phrase indicating that deeper meanings remain.
And so it was in the Egyptian exile: they had to withstand many trials until they merited to draw down the new path that is above nature.
Spiritual endurance prepared Israel to receive supernatural redemption.
And certainly the order of creation did not change for them without purpose.
The miracles were deeply purposeful, not arbitrary.
Rather, it was due to their self‑sacrifice in breaking all natural limitations through the trials and troubles of the Egyptian exile.
Their suffering refined them and elevated their spiritual capacity.
And this was the preparation for all generations, as it is written: “He made a remembrance for His wonders.”
The miracles of Egypt set a pattern for all future divine intervention.
The Sefat Emet explains that the Exodus and the splitting of the Sea were dual testimonies—to Israel’s spiritual stature and to God’s sovereignty. Miracles occurred not out of necessity but to reveal deeper truths. Israel’s endurance and self‑sacrifice unlocked a divine renewal beyond nature, establishing a pattern for all generations.
