Shabbos Souls Like Angels

And regarding the verse: “And it shall be… as a sign upon your hand and for a remembrance between your eyes, so that the Torah of God shall be in your mouth…”

The Sefat Emet opens with the Torah’s description of tefillin as a sign and a remembrance meant to place the Torah within one’s being.

And the Sages interpreted: “Those who require a sign”—excluding Shabbat and festivals, for they themselves are a sign.

The rabbis teach that tefillin are worn only on days when an external sign is needed, unlike Shabbat and festivals, whose very sanctity serves as the sign.

And to understand this, it seems from their wording that the souls of Israel are transformed on Shabbat and festivals—thus “one who needs a sign” excludes them.

The Sefat Emet explains that on sacred days the Jewish soul undergoes elevation, making an external sign unnecessary.

For the human being was created on a level higher than the angels, as it is written: “He placed there… the human He formed,” prepared to serve before God in Eden.

Before sin, humanity possessed a lofty spiritual stature, suited to divine service in its purest form.

And after the sin, it is written: “He changed his countenance and expelled him.”

The fall from Eden altered humanity’s spiritual state, distancing it from its original clarity.

And the higher form and garment were taken from him, as the Sages said: his soul became hidden in Eden.

The primordial spiritual garment was withdrawn, remaining concealed in the upper realms.

But through the Exodus and the receiving of the Torah, Israel merited to regain that soul, as it is written: “I said: You are gods…”

The redemption from Egypt and Sinai restored a measure of the original, angelic soul.

And they became truly similar to angels.

Israel briefly regained an elevated, angel-like state.

And with the Exodus this path began, for it was the first commandment, as it is said: “And you were naked and bare…”

The Exodus marked the beginning of reclaiming the lost spiritual garment.

Hinting that they lacked that upper garment, which is regained through the commandments—this “rabbinic garment.”

The mitzvot serve to rebuild the spiritual covering lost after the sin.

And although after the sin of the golden calf that form was again taken from us…

The fall after Sinai once more diminished that regained spiritual state.

Nevertheless, all gifts given by the Holy One are for all generations, and they remain hidden and stored away.

Spiritual attainments are never lost; they persist in concealed form.

And there are times and commandments through which one merits drawing forth illuminations from those forms.

Certain observances reconnect us to those stored spiritual lights.

As the Sages said, “Moses merited and took them”—meaning that God prepared within all Israel the retention of those lights, even if not all can receive them openly.

Even if only a few access them fully, the lights exist latently in the nation.

As it is said: “And they are destined to return to us.”

The hidden lights will eventually be restored in full.

And just as they merited all this through the Exodus, so did God establish for all generations a remembrance of the Exodus.

The patterns of redemption continue through ritual commemoration.

And through the mitzvah of tefillin as a sign and remembrance between the eyes…

Tefillin are a daily reenactment of the spiritual restoration that began in Egypt.

These written letters in the passages illuminate for a person the hidden lights rooted in their source.

The words of the Torah in tefillin activate those concealed spiritual energies.

And on the holy Shabbat, Israel becomes distinguished and elevated, and the light of the extra soul shines in them—therefore they themselves are a sign.

Shabbat elevates the soul directly, making external symbols unnecessary.

Therefore on Shabbat the Torah is read in a state of revelation.

The sanctity of the day makes divine truths more openly accessible.

But on weekdays the letters are revealed through the housings (of the tefillin).

During the week, external structures—tefillin—mediate the illumination.

And indeed, the main revelation of holiness to Israel occurs when they are separated from the nations.

Spiritual distinction allows sacred light to appear.

And on Shabbat, since it is written: “It is a sign between Me and you,” there is no foreign contact.

Shabbat creates a boundary separating Israel from outside influence.

Therefore the unique light of Israel is revealed.

Shabbat enables a full manifestation of Israel’s inherent spiritual radiance.

Summary: Tefillin reveal hidden spiritual lights lost after humanity’s fall but restored through the Exodus, while Shabbat itself elevates the soul, becoming its own sign. Through sacred times and mitzvot, Israel draws forth the ancient, concealed illuminations prepared for all generations.
