Renewed Souls Through Redemption
“In the Midrash: ‘This renewal shall be for you — you have no other renewal,’ etc.”
The Sefat Emet begins by citing the Midrash, which teaches that the renewal given at the Exodus is the essential and primary renewal for Israel.
“For at the Exodus the Children of Israel became truly a new creation.”
Leaving Egypt transformed Israel’s very essence, making them spiritually new beings.
“When they were chosen to be servants of the Holy One, blessed be He.”
This new creation coincided with their being chosen for divine service.
“And their souls were renewed, as our sages said: ‘A convert who converts is like a newborn child.’”
Their inner souls were refreshed in a manner comparable to rebirth.
“Therefore it says: ‘I am the Lord your God who took you out,’ and not ‘who created you.’”
The Exodus, not creation, becomes the primary act by which God identifies Himself to Israel.
“For this is more essential than creation.”
The spiritual renewal at the Exodus surpasses even the original act of creation.
“And truly, it is God’s will that for Israel this renewal be more essential than the creation, for it is the ultimate purpose.”
The Exodus provides the goal and meaning behind creation itself.
“And we must learn that this was fulfilled in Israel when they stood at Sinai.”
The Sinai revelation completed this identity-forming renewal.
“Therefore it was said to them: ‘Who took you out.’”
The Torah emphasizes the Exodus as the defining act.
“For it was clear before Him that this impacts them more than creation.”
The Exodus resonates more deeply with human experience than creation does.
“And so it is always: the trait of the Jew is readiness for self‑sacrifice for God, knowing that this is the purpose of creation.”
The innate Jewish nature inclines toward devotion because it senses this purpose.
“And indeed, they merited this trait through the Exodus.”
The Exodus implanted this quality into the people.
“And regarding this very thing it is said: ‘This month shall be for you.’”
The verse teaches that Israel was granted continual spiritual renewal.
“And as it is written: ‘This people I have formed’ — that the Children of Israel have a unique form.”
Israel possesses a spiritually distinct inner form created for divine purpose.
“And truly, everything depends on a person’s service.”
The realization of this form depends upon human effort.
“As stated in the Zohar on the verse ‘Who forms the spirit of man within him’: according to a person’s service, he merits the revelation of the spirit and soul within him.”
Divine inner qualities unfold in proportion to one’s spiritual labor.
“And on this it is said: ‘There is no Rock like our God,’ which the sages interpret as: an artist who forms a form within a form.”
God continuously shapes the inner layers of the human soul.
“And according to one’s reception of His divinity, so a right spirit is renewed within him.”
Openness to God generates ongoing inner renewal.
“Therefore Israel has continual renewal — this is ‘This month shall be for you,’ and ponder this.”
The monthly renewal symbolizes Israel’s perpetual spiritual rejuvenation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus created Israel anew, surpassing even creation itself. This renewal defines their essence, grants readiness for divine service, and continues perpetually according to their spiritual effort.
