Constant Renewal from Redemption

Bo · תרל"ב (1871) · Essay 2

“And in the Midrash on ‘This month shall be for you,’ the Holy One said: You have no greater renewal than this.”

The Sefat Emet begins by emphasizing that the essential renewal granted to Israel is bound up with this commandment of the new month.

“For in the redemption from Egypt the power of Creation was renewed, being clarified as emerging from the vitality given by the Blessed One.”

The Exodus revealed that the creative force of the universe constantly flows from divine life and sustenance.

“And when everything is nullified to the root of life…”

When all existence returns its awareness to its divine source, its true foundation becomes apparent.

“It is then, naturally, in constant renewal.”

Such alignment reveals that renewal is not an event but a continual condition.

“As it is written: ‘He renews in His goodness each day.’”

This verse affirms perpetual creation as an ongoing divine act.

“And this is why we recite the redemption from Egypt before the blessing of the Shema each day—for through the Exodus the renewal of Creation was clarified.”

The liturgy reflects this principle: awareness of redemption precedes acceptance of divine unity because redemption revealed constant creation.

“And it also depends on human beings, to know this.”

Human consciousness plays a role in sustaining awareness of continual renewal.

“As it is said: ‘You have no other renewal…’”

The Midrash emphasizes that this is the core of renewal entrusted to Israel.

“Meaning that before every action, movement, or sensation…”

The Sefat Emet explains that this awareness must precede all human activity.

“We must preface everything with this knowledge—‘the first of the months,’ as explained above.”

This inner awareness of renewal becomes the spiritual ‘first of the months,’ the foundation for all living.

Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus revealed the continual renewal of Creation, rooted in divine life. Human beings must maintain awareness of this renewal, allowing it to precede and shape all action and experience.
