Revealing God Within Nature
In the Midrash: “A heavy stone… and the anger of a fool…”
The Sefat Emet opens by citing a Midrash about heaviness and foolish anger as metaphors for spiritual resistance.
My honored grandfather said that after the Exodus, the Ten Utterances became the Ten Commandments through the medium of the Ten Plagues.
The transition from creation to revelation happens through the plagues, which transform the world’s foundation of “utterances” into revealed Divine speech.
And this is the difference between an “utterance” and “speech.”
An utterance is hidden creative force; speech is manifest Divine authority.
For speech denotes kingship and governance, in which it becomes revealed that all inner vitality derives from the Ten Utterances and cannot be concealed by nature.
Speech breaks through nature’s veil and shows that all life-force is from God alone.
So that Pharaoh would no longer say: “The Nile is mine…”
The plagues dismantle Egypt’s illusion of autonomous power.
And this is the meaning of “the anger of a fool is heavy.”
The heaviness represents the resistance of nature to revealing God’s light.
For creation is no toil for Him.
The Ten Utterances required no struggle—they were simple Divine expression.
For the Ten Utterances were merely “Let there be light,” and it was so.
Creation flowed effortlessly from Divine will.
But in the Exodus, many strategies were needed.
Revealing God's light within nature and opposition required complex Divine intervention.
For clarifying Divine vitality within nature is far heavier.
It is harder to reveal God inside the concealed world than to create the world itself.
Because free will and power were given to the forces of impurity, as it says: “For I have hardened.”
The struggle exists because God empowered concealment to allow human choice.
And the counsel is through true faith: to know that every constriction derives only from Him.
Faith dissolves spiritual bondage by recognizing God as the source even of obstacles.
And through this the constriction is nullified.
Once its Divine root is acknowledged, the barrier loses its power.
For the purpose was only “so that you may tell…”
The plagues aimed to implant enduring faith in future generations.
That faith should shine within a person’s heart.
The goal is an illuminated, living consciousness of God.
For creation itself was meant to reach truth through faith.
Faith is the bridge from created concealment to Divine truth.
And certainly with the first plague he would have sent Israel out.
The plagues were not needed for coercion but for revelation.
One may also interpret the term as meaning “revelation,” like “uncovered.”
The plagues uncovered the hidden structure of reality.
From this, human free choice also emerges.
Because reality contains many facets, humans must unify them toward God.
So too the explanation of “that you may place My signs… and tell your son.”
Transmission ensures the revelation continues through all generations.
It is to clarify the life of Torah within every constriction and concealment.
The plagues illuminate Torah even in the darkest places.
And on Shabbat it is said: “A remembrance of the Exodus.”
Shabbat renews the revelation of Divine governance.
For the forces of impurity cannot raise themselves on Shabbat.
Shabbat neutralizes concealment and empowers inner spiritual life.
And each person can awaken the inner life of all creation.
Shabbat grants access to the Divine vitality underlying the world.
And Shabbat gives life to the entire week.
Its sanctity flows outward, sustaining all days.
The Sefat Emet teaches that the plagues transformed hidden creation into revealed Divine kingship. This revelation breaks concealment, empowers faith, and culminates each week in the light of Shabbat, which restores access to the inner Divine life of the world.
