Plagues Uncovering Divine Speech

Bo · תרל"א (1870) · Essay 2

My revered grandfather, may his memory be a blessing, taught that the reason ten plagues were necessary…

The Sefat Emet begins by citing his grandfather: the ten plagues served a deep spiritual purpose.

…was to remove the shell and concealment from the Ten Utterances of Creation, transforming them into the Ten Commandments.

The plagues purified Creation, revealing the divine speech hidden within it.

The explanation is that in this world it is hidden that the life-force of all things is the letters of Torah, the creative utterances.

Everything lives through divine speech, but this truth is concealed.

Thus it is said that reward is given to the righteous who uphold the world created through the “for the sake of” (al menat).

The righteous connect to the hidden root of existence and thereby sustain it.

Meaning: they know and cleave to the hidden source of life embedded in these conditions.

The tzaddik perceives what others do not.

And through each plague, concealment over one utterance was removed.

Every plague peeled back one layer of spiritual blockage.

Thus they became the Ten Commandments.

The revelation at Sinai emerged from the purification begun in Egypt.

“Speech” means guidance or governance.

The divine speech is the divine direction of the world.

As it is said: “One word per generation.”

Divine guidance adapts to each era.

And as the Zohar explains on “You shall speak of them when you sit… when you walk…”

The verse implies living constantly under divine guidance.

That one guides all his actions by the words of God, in His unity and love, so that all deeds are for His sake.

This is the lived expression of divine speech.

And this is the meaning of “In His word He brings on evening.”

Even concealment (evening) is governed by divine speech.

This is the aspect of the Kingdom of Heaven: that His glory is present even in mixture and concealment, through faith.

Faith reveals God where He seems hidden.

And in exile the truth is concealed.

Galut darkens perception of divine unity.

The Zohar on Va’era states that the aspect of speech was in exile.

Divine communication was suppressed.

Thus Moses said, “I am of uncircumcised lips… not a man of words.”

Moses felt the exile of speech in himself.

And at the giving of the Torah the aspect of speech was revealed.

The concealment lifted fully at Sinai.

And the Midrash says: “Heavy is the stone…” meaning the creation of heaven and earth is no toil for Him.

Divine creation is effortless.

What is toil for Him? One who angers Him.

The struggle is human denial of God.

The “toil” refers only to what is hidden in this world.

Concealment creates spiritual effort.

So Pharaoh said, “The Nile is mine…”

Pharaoh embodied denial of divine source.

From this we learn that the holy Sabbath, called rest…

Shabbat reveals a different spiritual state.

The Torah attributes rest to Him who “does not grow weary.”

Shabbat expresses divine revelation, not divine fatigue.

The meaning is that on Shabbat it is revealed that all things live from God’s vitality.

Shabbat lifts the veil; divine speech becomes visible.

Therefore Israel testifies on Shabbat that God created the world.

Our rest aligns with His revelation.

As it is said: Whoever recites “Vayechulu” becomes a partner [in creation].

This knowledge is itself a form of spiritual rest.

Summary: The ten plagues stripped concealment from the Ten Utterances, revealing divine speech that culminated in the Ten Commandments. Exile hides God’s word; Shabbat restores its revelation.
