In the Midrash on "And it was on the eighth day."

The Sefas Emes opens on the parsha of the eighth day of the milu'im (the inauguration of the Mishkan), which the Midrash links to a deeper structure of seven and eight.

"Wisdom has built her house [she has hewn out her seven pillars]" (Mishlei 9:1).

The verse describes Chochmah erecting a structure resting on seven pillars, which Chazal apply to the seven days of Creation and the seven days of the milu'im.

The "seven pillars" are pillars to bind the lower worlds to their upper root.

The seven days are like supporting columns whose function is to connect this lower world back to its source above in Hashem.

Therefore there are seven days of milu'im (inauguration), for in the aspect of "seven days" there is the possibility of sin and blemish through man's transgression.

The realm of seven — the natural week and the created world — is the domain where a person can fall and cause damage.

But the aspect of "eight" has no blemish in it.

The eighth, which is above the natural order of seven, is a level that lies beyond the reach of sin and ruin.

Therefore during the seven days they required guarding — "At the entrance of the Ohel Mo'ed you shall dwell [seven days]" (Vayikra 8:35).

Because the level of seven is vulnerable to blemish, Aharon and his sons had to remain and stand watch at the entrance of the Mishkan throughout those seven days.

And to arrive at the aspect of "eight" is through teshuvah.

One ascends from the flawed realm of seven to the unblemished eighth only by means of returning to Hashem.

And from there comes the taharah (purity), as it is written, "This is the chok (decree) of the Torah" — this is a pure and holy point that the Kadosh Baruch Hu engraved into the souls of Bnei Yisrael, which cannot be changed.

The eighth level is the source of purity: an inner point of kedushah that Hashem etched permanently into every Jew's soul, immune to alteration.

And it is called "the chok (decree)."

The word chok denotes something engraved and fixed — hinting that this inner point is carved in and unchangeable.

As it is written, "I am Hashem, I have not changed" (Malachi 3:6).

Just as Hashem is unchanging, so too the holy point of His that He set within Bnei Yisrael never changes.

And since there is a portion of His Divinity, may He be blessed, in every Jew — for at Matan Torah, when He said "I am Hashem your God," Bnei Yisrael became bound to this Name —

At the giving of the Torah, Bnei Yisrael were fused to the Name of Hashem, so that a piece of His own Divinity dwells within every Jew.

Therefore, "You, Bnei Yisrael, are not consumed" (Malachi 3:6).

Because of this indestructible Divine portion within them, Bnei Yisrael can never be destroyed.

For there is within them a portion of the Name Havayah (the Four-Letter Name) which cannot be changed, does not admit alteration, and is not blemished by sin — as it is written, "The sayings of Hashem are pure sayings" (Tehillim 12:7), which do not become tamei (impure).

The Divine portion within a Jew is like the pure words of Hashem that can never contract impurity; sin cannot reach or ruin it.

And it is written, "Hashem has caused you to declare" (Devarim 26:18) — that the sayings of Hashem are engraved upon the heart of every Jew.

Hashem's words are inscribed into the very heart of each Jew, making that inner point a permanent fixture of his soul.

Therefore one can always return to purity through teshuvah, by the power of the aforementioned "chok of the Torah."

Since that engraved point of kedushah is never truly damaged, every Jew always retains the ability, through teshuvah, to draw on it and return to his original purity.

Summary: The seven days belong to the created, natural order where sin and blemish are possible, but the "eighth" is an unblemished level reached through teshuvah. Hashem engraved an unchangeable, pure point of His own Divinity into every Jew's soul at Matan Torah; because this inner point can never be ruined by sin, a Jew can always return to taharah through teshuvah.
