Inspiration as a springboard to teshuvah

These are the four parshiyos: Shekalim, Zachor, Parah, and HaChodesh.

The Sefas Emes begins by naming the four special Torah readings of this season — Shekalim, Zachor, Parah, and HaChodesh.

It appears that the two latter parshiyos are like the matter of the first ones, based on the verse: "A pure heart create for me, O God, and renew a proper spirit within me" (Tehillim 51:12).

He suggests that Parah and HaChodesh parallel Shekalim and Zachor, corresponding to the two halves of the pasuk — first a "pure heart," then a "renewed spirit."

And Shekalim is the generosity of the heart, and through this one merits a spirit of life, for there is always a point in every Jewish soul dedicated to Hashem.

Parshas Shekalim represents wholehearted generosity. Through arousing this giving spirit, one awakens the ever-present inner point in the soul that belongs to Hashem, and thereby draws down a "spirit of life."

And through the awakening of this point, even though one is not yet in a state of complete rectification, he merits a spirit (ru'ach).

Merely awakening this inner point — even before a person is fully refined — is enough to earn an initial inspiration, a "ru'ach" of life.

And afterward a person must return to rectify the generosity, so that it should be in purity, without any admixture of dross.

After that first inspiration, one must do teshuvah and purify his generous impulse so that it is entirely pure, free of any selfish or impure motives.

And then one merits the renewal of the spirit.

Only once the giving is purified does a person merit a renewed, lasting spirit — "renew a proper spirit within me."

For the principle is that when a person has some inner feeling, he must come from it to teshuvah, for it is an awakening from Heaven toward teshuvah, and not, God forbid, to come to haughtiness.

A general rule: whenever a person feels a flash of spiritual inspiration, he should channel it into teshuvah, recognizing it as a gift sent from Heaven to prompt growth — not, chas v'shalom, as grounds for pride in his own attainment.

And when he merits to return through this, he afterward merits to attain the depth of that first feeling properly.

By using the initial inspiration as a springboard to teshuvah, a person eventually merits to grasp the full depth of that first feeling in a lasting, proper way.

For the first time it does not yet endure, as in the teaching "the verse repeated it to make it indispensable."

The first burst of inspiration is not permanent; a second, deliberate effort is required to make it lasting — just as in halachah, when Scripture repeats a matter it signals that it is indispensable.

And whenever one needs renewal, he must first cleave to the small point as it is; and when he merits to find favor from Hashem, then he will return in teshuvah and a spirit of life will be renewed within him — and this is the matter of the four parshiyos. Examine this well.

Whenever renewal is needed, one must first attach himself to the small inner point exactly as it is. Having earned Hashem's favor through that attachment, he then does teshuvah and has a fresh spirit of life renewed within him. This two-stage process — awakening the point, then purifying it through teshuvah — is the inner theme of the four special parshiyos.

Summary: The four parshiyos embody the two-stage avodah of "a pure heart create for me" followed by "renew a proper spirit within me." First, like Parshas Shekalim, one awakens the inner point of the soul through wholehearted generosity, earning an initial spirit of inspiration. But this flash is not lasting; it must be channeled into teshuvah and purified of all dross — never into pride — and only then does a person merit a renewed, enduring spirit of life.
