Two doors: natural wisdom and Torah from Heaven

In the Midrash: "Hear, O daughter… and incline your ear…" (Tehillim 45:11); "We have a little sister…" (Shir HaShirim 8:8); "If she be a wall, we will build upon her a turret of silver…" (Shir HaShirim 8:9) — and if she be a "panel of cedar," that is only temporary, etc. — see there.

The Sefas Emes gathers these pesukim, which speak of two levels of receiving Hashem's word: a passing, external level and an enduring, inner one.

The matter is that first it says "Hear," and then a second time "incline your ear" — for the Torah is hidden from the eyes of all the living and cannot be revealed in this world in its fullness; only at times does a spark of the Torah reveal itself to awaken a person. And when one merits to set his whole heart and all his might to be drawn after that revelation, then the gates of binah (understanding) are opened to him at every moment, as it is taught in the Zohar HaKadosh on Parshas Mishpatim regarding "that beautiful maiden" — see there.

The Torah's full light is concealed; only sparks flash forth to rouse us. One who chases that spark with his whole being earns the continual opening of the gates of understanding — like the hidden maiden of the Zohar who beckons her beloved.

And concerning this it is written "Draw me — with but a slight hint we will run after You" (Shir HaShirim 1:4). Therefore it is written "to the land that I will show you" — at every time, for there is no fixed measure to this "showing," and according to how much a person goes out from his land and birthplace, so is it revealed to him.

"I will show you" is open-ended and ongoing: the more a person leaves behind his ingrained nature and habits, the more the Divine vista is unveiled to him.

But in detail, these are two "hearings" — an outer and an inner — as it is taught in the Midrash on the pasuk "Fortunate is the man who listens to Me, to watch at My doors" (Mishlei 8:34): a door within a door.

There are two gateways of perceiving Hashem, one nested inside the other — an external mode of "hearing" and a deeper, inner one.

For in truth, one who is wise can understand on his own the hashgachah (providence) of the Creator, may He be blessed, by paying heed to all that comes to be in the world and how the Holy One does kindness with every creature. This was the whole avodah of man before the giving of the Torah, and it is the dimension of "derech eretz that preceded the Torah." In this Avraham Avinu walked by his own power, as it is taught in the Zohar HaKadosh that he was a great sage and understood the wisdom of the act of Creation.

The outer door is the wisdom a thinking person can reach on his own — perceiving Hashem's providence and kindness through nature. This was Avraham's initial path, derech eretz preceding Torah, the human mind ascending toward G-d.

But there is an inner gateway, and that is the path of the Torah from Heaven, which is above human attainment by the natural way.

The inner door is Torah given from above — a knowledge that transcends what the human mind could ever reach on its own.

Therefore it is first written "Hear, O daughter" — and this is measured, each one according to his intellect.

"Hear" is the outer level, received in proportion to each person's own understanding.

But "incline your ear" is to nullify (bittul) all one's own knowledge and comprehension, to be drawn after the daas (knowledge) of the Torah — and this is "that I will show you."

"Incline your ear" is the inner level: setting aside one's own intellect in bittul to follow the Torah's higher knowledge, the boundless "I will show you."

And a person must watch each day at these two doors — which are the two berachos that the Chachamim instituted before Krias Shema: first on the formation of light and darkness (the natural order), and afterward on the Torah that the Holy One bequeathed to us. And this inner attainment is merited only by those who direct themselves toward His Name alone — this is the dimension of the chassid who acts "lifnim mishuras hadin" (beyond the letter of the law). It was fulfilled in Avraham Avinu, who "does kindness with his Maker," whose entire will was only to know Him and to publicize His Name's glory in the world.

The two morning berachos correspond to the two doors: nature, then Torah. The inner door opens only for one who seeks Hashem purely for His own sake — the chassid who goes beyond the law, as Avraham did, living wholly to know Hashem and spread His Name.

And these two dimensions are the "doors."

The outer and inner modes of attainment are the two gateways spoken of.

And they are the dimension of the lower "hei" and the upper "hei."

They correspond to the two letters hei of Hashem's Name — the lower (revealed) and upper (concealed) levels.

The dimension of tefillah, which the Gemara calls "temporal life" (chayei sha'ah), and the dimension of teshuvah through the Torah, which is called "eternal life" (chayei olam).

The outer door is prayer, tending to passing needs; the inner door is teshuvah through Torah, which grants enduring, eternal life.

And this is: "if she be a door" — that is the outer door, which is temporal life; "she is a wall" — that is eternal life. Now, Avraham Avinu was prepared to bind the whole world [to Hashem], as in "we have a sister (achos)" — for he "stitched together" (ichah) the entire world.

A swinging "door" is the unstable outer level; a fixed "wall" is the enduring inner one. Avraham, whose name evokes "achos," sought to unite and stitch the whole world back to Hashem.

But he was still in "smallness" (katnus), and it depended on his choice: had he grasped at simplicity, G-d forbid, it would have been only temporary. So it is with every person, who has within him some [holy] point (nekudah); and according to how he strengthens it in its smallness, so he merits that a building (binyan) will arise from it.

"A little sister" — every person begins with only a small inner point, and its fate hinges on his choices. Nurture it and it grows into an enduring edifice; neglect it and it remains fleeting.

And because Avraham Avinu entered "beyond the line" and cleaved to the inner dimension (penimiyus), the hidden depths of wisdom were revealed to him.

Because Avraham went beyond mere law and reached the inner door, the concealed treasures of Torah wisdom were opened to him.

And so too is the difference and distinction between Bnei Yisrael and the nations.

This inner door of Torah from Heaven is precisely what sets Bnei Yisrael apart from the nations, who have only the outer door of natural wisdom.

And in each and every year a new illumination descends from Heaven.

Every year brings a fresh light from above, renewing the cycle of revelation.

And on Rosh Hashanah it is the dimension of the outer door — all receive vitality, and some receive [only] temporal life.

Rosh Hashanah corresponds to the outer door: every creature is granted life, but for many it is merely the passing "chayei sha'ah."

But Bnei Yisrael merit to complete the sealing on Yom Kippur for eternal life — and this is "I am a wall."

Through teshuvah, Bnei Yisrael reach the inner door on Yom Kippur, sealing themselves for enduring life: "I am a wall."

"And I have become in his eyes as one who finds peace (shalom)" (Shir HaShirim 8:10).

Reaching the inner level brings completeness and peace.

And they merit, on Sukkos, the dimension of a "turret of silver," which is the supernal kindness (chesed elyon), through the power of teshuvah, which is the inner door, as above.

The fruit of inner teshuvah is the Sukkos "turret of silver" — the supernal chesed that crowns those who entered the inner door.

And so they expounded in Midrash Chazis on "we have a sister" — see there.

The Sefas Emes notes that the Midrash on Shir HaShirim reads these verses along the same lines.

And it all depends on receiving the first [holy] point for the sake of Heaven; and every person, according to how he prepares himself in the days of youth, so he merits the building of a "turret of silver."

Everything hinges on embracing that initial holy point purely for Hashem's sake; the effort invested in one's youth determines the enduring edifice one ultimately merits.

Summary: There are two doors to perceiving Hashem — an outer one, the natural wisdom a thinking person can reach on his own (derech eretz, prayer, "chayei sha'ah," Rosh Hashanah), and an inner one, the Torah from Heaven attained through bittul of one's own intellect and pure devotion (teshuvah, "chayei olam," Yom Kippur, the Sukkos "turret of silver"). Avraham began as a "little sister," a small holy point, but by going beyond the law into penimiyus he became an enduring "wall." So too every person: nurturing that initial holy point for the sake of Heaven is what turns a fleeting beginning into a lasting edifice.
