Avraham planted indestructible love of Hashem

In the Midrash, on "We have a little sister" (Shir HaShirim 8:8): if she establishes matters like a wall, "we will build upon her"; and in the Midrash Tanchuma, "we will build upon her a turret of silver" — these are Yisrael, as it is written, "the wings of the dove are covered with silver" (Tehillim 68:14).
The "little sister" of Shir HaShirim is Bnei Yisrael; the Midrash teaches that if they hold firm like a wall, they merit to have a fortress of silver built upon them — an enduring structure of holiness.
And this is the midah of Avraham Avinu, who planted ahavas Hashem (love of Hashem) in the heart of every Jew — as my grandfather, of blessed memory, said, that for this we make the brachah "Magen Avraham" (Shield of Avraham), for Hashem Yisborach protects this point that Avraham Avinu planted in the heart of the Jew.
Avraham's defining quality was love of Hashem, which he implanted as an inner point in every Jewish heart; the brachah "Magen Avraham" expresses that Hashem Himself guards this precious nekudah.
And that yearning is found forever in every Jew, and concerning this it is said, "Many waters cannot extinguish the love" (Shir HaShirim 8:7), and it is called a "turret of silver."
The longing for Hashem that Avraham planted can never be put out, no matter what floods of difficulty come; this indestructible love is the "fortress of silver" within every Jew.
And through this is fulfilled the saying of Chazal: "Open for Me an opening like the eye of a needle, and I will open for you an opening like the entrance of the Heichal and the Ulam."
Even a tiny opening of the heart toward Hashem is answered with a vast opening from Above — a small awakening of love draws an immense response.
Therefore, since Avraham began to grasp this love and gave over his very life — even though it was but a single point, as it says "We have a little sister" — from this was made a wall and a permanent edifice for all generations, as it is written, "And I will make you into a great nation"; and all Bnei Yisrael lean upon this, as it says "covered with silver," which is like "love covers over all transgressions" (Mishlei 10:12) — and this is the merit of Avraham Avinu.
Avraham's mesiras nefesh, beginning from one small point of love, became a lasting wall on which all future generations rest; his merit shields Bnei Yisrael, and the very love he planted is what "covers over all sins."
Summary: Avraham Avinu's defining midah was ahavas Hashem, which he planted as an indestructible inner point in the heart of every Jew. Beginning from a single small point of love and mesiras nefesh, he built an enduring "fortress of silver" upon which all generations of Bnei Yisrael lean; Hashem guards this nekudah ("Magen Avraham"), and this love — which no waters can extinguish — covers over all transgressions.
