The equal inner point of love in every Jew

Concerning the matter of "the wealthy shall not give more (lo yarbeh)" (Shemos 30:15).
The Sefas Emes addresses the law of the half-shekel: rich and poor give exactly the same amount, with the rich forbidden to give more.
And similarly we find regarding the donation of the Mishkan, which was in gold and copper, according to the generosity of each one's spirit.
For the Mishkan's general donations, each person gave as much as his heart moved him — unequal amounts.
But the silver of the countings (kesef pekudim — the half-shekels) was equal, to show that the love and ratzon (will) found in the hearts of Bnei Yisrael is the power that Hashem planted within us at the receiving of the Torah.
By contrast, the half-shekel was identical for all, teaching that the inner ahavah toward Hashem is not a personal achievement but a gift Hashem implanted equally in every Jew at Sinai.
And it is not [a product] of human power.
This core love is not generated by human effort; it is divinely given.
For yirah and the other midos are, each one, according to his [own] power.
Fear of Heaven and the other character traits vary from person to person, depending on one's own efforts and capacities.
But the ahavah is a gift from the Holy One.
Love of Hashem, however, is a matanah — a present from Hashem — and is therefore equal in all.
Therefore silver (kesef), which is the aspect of love, the hand of each one is equal in it.
"Kesef" relates to "kisufin" (yearning/love); since this love is equal in all, the silver half-shekel is given equally by every Jew.
And although we have found and seen that there are chassidim, men of [great] deeds, whose love [of Hashem] is exceedingly greater than that of other people,
The Sefas Emes raises an objection: surely we see that some great tzaddikim have far greater love of Hashem than ordinary people.
this is no contradiction, for several reasons.
He answers that this observation does not contradict the principle that the essential love is equal in all.
And one [reason] is that the nekudah (the inner point) spreads out according to the preparation of the vessel and the garment.
The inner point of love is the same in everyone, but how much of it becomes manifest depends on how refined a person's "vessel" (his being) and "garment" (his deeds and character) are.
The point of this one is clothed in a refined garment, and of that one in a coarse garment.
In a tzaddik, the inner point shines through a fine, transparent garment; in another, the garment is thick and obscures the same inner light.
But the essential nekudah is equal in every Jew.
At its root, the inner point of love is identical in every member of Klal Yisrael; only its expression differs.
And the second [reason] is that we find that one may pay the shekel on behalf of a poor person.
The halachah allows a wealthy person to pay the half-shekel for a poor man who cannot afford it.
It is only forbidden to give for oneself more than a half-shekel.
The prohibition "lo yarbeh" applies only to giving more than a half-shekel for one's own obligation.
But the wealthy one can give on behalf of several poor people.
A rich man may pay many half-shekels — not as "more" for himself, but as agent for those who cannot pay.
And just as we find regarding physical wealth,
The Sefas Emes draws an analogy to material wealth.
that the portion of the poor man, the Holy One entrusts into the hand of the wealthy man — as written in the seforim — for it is a deposit (pikadon) in his hand, since Hashem's will was that this poor man's portion should come to him by means of the wealthy man.
A rich man's surplus is really a pikadon (entrusted deposit) holding the poor man's allotted share; Hashem arranges that the poor should receive their portion specifically through the wealthy.
And so it is with one "wealthy in da'as," who has the da'as to relate to the spirit of several who are "poor in da'as."
The same applies spiritually: a person rich in understanding holds the capacity to reach and uplift many who are lacking in da'as.
And he can awaken the collective love of many who are poor in da'as.
Such a person can arouse and channel the latent love of Hashem in the many who cannot awaken it themselves — giving "the shekel" on their behalf.
But on his own account he "shall not give more," as it says.
For his own self, even the spiritually wealthy person gives only the one equal "half-shekel" of love — the essential point that is the same in all.
Summary: The half-shekel is equal for rich and poor because it represents the love of Hashem — a gift He planted equally in every Jew at Sinai — unlike yirah and the other midos, which vary by personal effort. The visible differences among tzaddikim reflect only how refined a person's "garment" is, not the essential inner point, which is identical in all. And just as a wealthy man may pay the shekel for the poor — holding their portion as an entrusted deposit — one "rich in da'as" can awaken the latent love of the many "poor in da'as," yet for his own self he too gives only the single equal share.
