The half-shekel coin of fire within the soul
Shekalim · half-shekel · tzelem Elokim · Torah · penimiyus
In Rashi: Moshe Rabbeinu had difficulty [understanding how a person could give a ransom for his soul], and the Holy One showed him a coin of fire, [saying] "like this they shall give." (Rashi, Shemos 30:13)
The Sefas Emes takes up Rashi's account that Moshe could not grasp the mitzvah of the half-shekel until Hashem displayed a "coin of fire" as the model for what each person must give.
The explanation of the matter is that all the mitzvos and deeds of Bnei Yisrael are surely not accomplished by human power, but rather by virtue of the readiness of the souls of Bnei Yisrael, who possess a devekus (cleaving) to the living God — as it is written, "in the image of God He made man," and the 248 limbs correspond to the 248 positive commandments, etc. Therefore the Torah was given to them, which is called "fire" — "a fiery law" (eish das) (Devarim 33:2), a supernal mode of conduct — and the form and likeness of the 22 letters of the Torah is found in every soul of Yisrael; and by virtue of this they have the power to rectify the externality, the garment of the body, through practical mitzvos, to make the garment resemble the penimiyus, the root of the soul, as above.
Bnei Yisrael's mitzvos are not mere human acts; they flow from the inherent holiness of their souls, which cleave to Hashem and are formed b'tzelem Elokim. The body's 248 limbs mirror the 248 mitzvos, and the 22 letters of Torah are imprinted in every Jewish soul. The Torah, "eish das," is a fiery, supernal guide; through performing physical mitzvos, a person aligns the outer "garment" of the body with the inner root of the soul.
And this is the "coin of fire" — a form (tzurah) that is stamped into the souls of Bnei Yisrael by the power of the Torah, as above.
The "coin of fire" Hashem showed Moshe is the fiery imprint — the spiritual "stamp" of the Torah's letters and form — pressed into every Jewish soul. The half-shekel is not really paid by human strength but expresses this Divine tzelem already minted within.
And this itself is the meaning of "half a shekel" — that the rectification of the body is only "half a form," meant to make it resemble and equal to the portion of the soul.
The "half" shekel signifies that the body's work is only one half of the picture: the deeds of the body are meant to be brought into balance and likeness with the corresponding half — the inner soul. The two halves together form the complete tzurah.
As it is written, "the hidden things belong to Hashem our God…" (Devarim 29:28)
The inner, hidden "half" of a person — the concealed portion of the soul — belongs to Hashem, beyond a person's direct reach, while the revealed deeds are his to rectify.
And to the extent that one rectifies the revealed [half], so is the hidden portion awakened — and concerning this we pray, "may the pleasantness of Hashem be upon us," as is known in the Zohar HaKodesh.
When a person perfects his revealed "half" through mitzvos, he draws down and awakens the corresponding hidden half from Above. This is what we ask in "vihi noam Hashem aleinu" — that Hashem complete from His side the inner half we cannot reach on our own.
And it is taught that the World to Come was created with the letter "yud" [and "hey"] and this world with the letter "hey," [together forming the Name]; therefore the avodah of a person is "half a shekel," as above. (Menachos 29b)
Since this world and the next were each created with a different letter of Hashem's Name, neither half is complete on its own. A person's avodah is therefore inherently a "half-shekel" — he perfects the revealed half belonging to this world, and Hashem joins it to the hidden half, completing the whole.
Summary: The "coin of fire" Hashem showed Moshe represents the fiery imprint of the Torah's letters and the tzelem Elokim already stamped within every Jewish soul, so that mitzvos are never merely human acts but expressions of the soul's inner holiness. The half-shekel teaches that the rectification of the body is only "half a form," meant to be brought into likeness with the soul's portion. As one perfects the revealed half through mitzvos, the hidden half — which "belongs to Hashem" — is awakened from Above, completing the whole, just as this world and the next were each created with one letter of the Divine Name.
