Half-shekel and Yaakov's fiery point
Shekalim · half-shekel · Yaakov · inner point · tzaddik
Moshe Rabbeinu was puzzled regarding the machatzis ha'shekel (half-shekel), [so] the Holy One, blessed be He, showed him a coin of fire, [saying] "like this they shall give" (Tanchuma; cf. Rashi, Shemos 30:13).
Moshe could not grasp how a mere half-shekel could atone for a soul, so Hashem showed him a fiery coin as the model for the donation.
My grandfather, of blessed memory, explained this based on the Mishnah: "to declare the greatness of the Former of creation, for all people are stamped with a single seal, yet none of their faces are alike" (Sanhedrin 4:5).
The Sefas Emes cites his grandfather, the Chiddushei HaRim, who connects the "coin" to the Mishnah's teaching: though all mankind is stamped from one die — Adam — each face is unique, demonstrating Hashem's greatness.
And he said that this seal is the image of Yaakov Avinu, engraved beneath the Kisei HaKavod (the Throne of Glory), and it is a "coin of fire," as it is written, "the house of Yaakov shall be a fire..." (Ovadiah 1:18).
The "seal" or "die" from which every Jewish soul is stamped is the form of Yaakov Avinu, engraved beneath Hashem's Throne — and it is fiery, since "the house of Yaakov is fire."
Accordingly, the explanation of the matter is that Moshe Rabbeinu was puzzled regarding what is stated, "the poor shall not give less" (Shemos 30:15) — that this generosity must be found in every single Jew.
Moshe's difficulty was: how can even the poorest Jew possess the nedivus (generosity of spirit) to give equally — how is such giving present in every person without exception?
And the Holy One, blessed be He, showed him that there exists one point of the aforementioned form in every single Jew, from the power of Yaakov Avinu — only that this is [realized] in the collective of Yisrael.
Hashem showed Moshe that every Jew contains one "point" of Yaakov's fiery form — the nekudah penimis (inner point) — drawn from the power of Yaakov Avinu. But this generous, holy point is fully expressed specifically through the unified collective of Klal Yisrael.
Therefore "the wealthy shall not give more," and through this "the poor shall not give less" — for even the wealthy one must hand over his portion to the community, so that the will of each individual should be to fulfill the will of Hashem, that each one give a half-shekel.
Because the holy point is realized only in the collective, the rich man cannot give more — he must merge his portion into the community. This is precisely what enables the poor man to "not give less": each person's ratzon is to complete Hashem's will as part of the whole, each giving exactly a machatzis — a half, never a whole, because no individual is complete on his own.
Now, the sinner gives his portion to the tzaddik, as it says, "if one merits, the tzaddik takes his fellow's portion" (Chagigah 15a); and it is in the power of the tzaddikim to restore to each one his portion — and consequently the aforementioned generosity will be found in every Jewish soul, for it is imprinted in all the souls of Bnei Yisrael, as above.
When a person sins, his lost portion passes to the tzaddikim; but the tzaddikim have the power to give each person back his share. Through this, the holy point of generosity from Yaakov is restored to and revealed in every single Jewish soul, since it was stamped into all of them from the start.
And this is like the manner in which Moshe Rabbeinu, with his "good eye," restored to all Bnei Yisrael the crowns of "naaseh" and "nishma" on Shabbos Kodesh.
Just as the tzaddik restores each person's portion, so Moshe Rabbeinu — with his generous "ayin tovah" — gave back to all Bnei Yisrael the crowns they had received for "naaseh v'nishma" but lost through the eigel, returning them on Shabbos Kodesh.
Summary: Moshe was puzzled how a mere half-shekel could atone, and how even the poorest Jew could possess the generosity to give. Hashem showed him a coin of fire — the seal of Yaakov Avinu engraved beneath the Throne, from which every Jewish soul is stamped, each carrying one inner "point" of that fiery form. This holy point of nedivus is realized only through the unified collective, so the rich give no more and the poor no less: each gives a "half," merging his ratzon into the whole to fulfill Hashem's will. Though a sinner's portion passes to the tzaddikim, they have the power to restore each person's share — just as Moshe, with his generous eye, returned to all Bnei Yisrael the lost crowns of "naaseh v'nishma" on Shabbos Kodesh.
