Inner Divine bounty of Shemini Atzeres

"On the eighth day there shall be a solemn gathering (atzeres) for you."

Shemini Atzeres is uniquely "for you" — Bnei Yisrael — set apart from the universal themes of Sukkos.

This refers to the penimiyus (inner dimension) of the shefa (Divine flow), for Bnei Yisrael are the vessels fit to receive it.

While Sukkos draws down blessing for the whole world, Shemini Atzeres draws down the innermost flow of bounty, which only Bnei Yisrael are prepared to receive.

And this comes through the power of the Torah, as it is written: "A good acquisition (lekach tov) I have given you" (Mishlei 4:2).

Their ability to receive this inner flow stems from the Torah, which Hashem gave them as His own precious "good portion."

And in the Midrash: the seller was sold along with it — meaning, deveykus (clinging) to Him, Yisborach, as the Midrash says on the verse "From His mouth come knowledge and understanding" (Mishlei 2:6): He came to His son and gave him from that which was within His own mouth — see Parshas Tisa.

The Midrash teaches that when Hashem "gave" the Torah, He gave Himself along with it, like a king who cannot part from his daughter; through Torah, Bnei Yisrael become bonded to Hashem Himself.

For on the Chag of Sukkos blessing descends for the entire year, as it is said that on the Chag we are judged regarding water, which is the essence of the blessing of parnasah (livelihood).

Sukkos is the time when the rainfall — and with it all material sustenance for the year — is decreed.

But for Bnei Yisrael, everything comes through the power of the Torah.

While the world receives sustenance through nature, for Bnei Yisrael even their parnasah flows through the channel of Torah.

And it is taught: "There is no water except Torah" — and this too is according to the receivers. For Bnei Yisrael, who know that everything comes through the power of the Torah, for them "there is no water except Torah," and they merit Torah, and consequently they are blessed in everything.

Since Bnei Yisrael recognize Torah as the true source of all blessing, the "water" they are judged for is really Torah itself; by meriting Torah they automatically receive every material blessing along with it.

And this is why we pray "Remember the father (Avraham)... for their sake... through their righteousness..." — meaning that the shefa should come by virtue of the tzaddikim, and then it is through the power of the Torah.

In the tefillah for rain we invoke the merit of the Avos, because when blessing comes through the righteous, it flows as an inner, Torah-rooted bounty rather than mere natural provision.

And it is written: "The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in its time" (Tehillim 145:15).

Hashem provides for every creature its sustenance at the set time, through the ordinary workings of nature.

"You open Your hand and satisfy the ratzon (desire) of every living thing"; "Hashem is righteous (tzaddik) in all His ways... and devoted (chassid) in all His deeds" (Tehillim 145:16-17).

The Sefas Emes will now distinguish two modes of Hashem's giving — the fixed "righteous" order of nature, and the freely "devoted" giving that goes beyond it.

The meaning is: Hakadosh Baruch Hu prepared, through the way of nature, the sustenance of every creature, as it is written, "For everything there is a season and a time" (Koheles 3:1).

This is the "tzaddik in all His ways" — the orderly, predetermined provision built into nature for all creatures.

But the penimiyus of the shefa — where Hakadosh Baruch Hu opens His good treasury with a special ratzon — is only for Bnei Yisrael, who are called "children of the living God" (Hoshea 2:1).

Beyond the fixed flow of nature, there is an inner bounty that Hashem bestows with special, personal will — reserved for Bnei Yisrael as His own children.

"Hashem is righteous in all His ways" — that which He has prepared in advance; but "devoted in His deeds" refers to the particulars that He does out of His chesed.

"His ways" are the general, prearranged order of nature; "His deeds" are the specific acts of loving-kindness He performs beyond that order, out of pure chesed.

And this is far greater — that which Hakadosh Baruch Hu adds out of His chesed.

What Hashem gives over and above the natural order, out of love, far exceeds the basic provision itself.

And this is as Chazal said: "The addition of Hakadosh Baruch Hu is greater than the essential portion."

The "extra" that Hashem grants out of chesed surpasses the original measure He had already set.

And so it is written in the Midrash on Pinchas regarding Shemini Atzeres: "You have added to the nation, Hashem" (Yeshayahu 26:15) — see there.

Shemini Atzeres itself is this "addition" — an extra day Hashem grants out of love, embodying the inner bounty He bestows beyond the natural order.

Summary: Shemini Atzeres is the day of penimiyus — the innermost Divine flow that only Bnei Yisrael, as vessels prepared through Torah, can receive. Whereas the world's sustenance comes through the fixed order of nature ("Hashem is righteous in all His ways"), Bnei Yisrael receive an additional, inner bounty that Hashem pours out with special love ("devoted in all His deeds"). This "addition greater than the essential portion" is the very nature of Shemini Atzeres, "for you," given through the power of the Torah.
