Hidden holiness in the lower world
water libation · lower waters · Simchas Beis Hashoeivah · refinement · Sukkos
Shemini Atzeres. Chazal said: Pour water before Me on the Chag, so that the year's rains should be blessed for you.
On Sukkos, when we are judged for water, we pour the nisuch hamayim (water libation) on the Mizbeach so that the rainfall of the coming year should be blessed.
For the waters were divided — "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters" — and the lower waters weep, saying: "We too wish to be before the King."
At Creation the waters were split into upper and lower; the lower waters cry that they have been cast down, far from the Divine Presence, and they yearn to return to Hashem.
Chazal wrote, as brought in Rashi on Parshas Vayikra, that a bris (covenant) was made with the lower waters — to offer water from them on the Chag, and salt upon the korbanos — see there.
To comfort the weeping lower waters, Hashem promised them a portion in the avodah: the water libation of Sukkos and the salt placed on every korban.
The meaning is that in truth this lower portion also contains kedushah, just like the upper portion, for there is no jealousy among the works of Creation.
The lower, physical world is not really inferior; it carries the same holiness as the upper world, since Hashem placed kedushah in every part of creation.
It is only that here it is hidden, and pesoles (dross) became mixed into it, as it is written: "And the earth was tohu (formless)..."
The holiness of the lower world is concealed and intermingled with waste matter, which is why the world began in a state of tohu, needing to be sorted out.
And it requires tikkunim (acts of refinement) until the good is clarified out.
The hidden good in the lower world must be drawn out through our avodah, separating it from the dross.
And this is the difference between wine and water.
The Sefas Emes now contrasts the wine libation with the water libation to illustrate this idea of refinement.
For wine comes about through processes of refinement — harvesting, threshing, treading, and many labors.
Wine represents the hidden good that must be extracted through much human effort and many stages of work.
But water is just as it is.
Water, by contrast, needs no processing — it represents kedushah that is revealed plainly, without labor.
And Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave a time when the wellspring can be revealed below as well, without dross, requiring no tikkun.
Sukkos is a moment when the inner spring of holiness shines openly even in the lower world, pure and needing no refinement.
This is a foretaste of the future, as it is written: "And it shall be on that day, living waters shall go forth..." (Zechariah 14:8).
The pure revelation of the water libation is a small taste of the time to come, when living waters of holiness will flow openly into the world.
And this follows the rule: anything that was included in a general category and then singled out, is singled out to teach about the whole category.
The Sefas Emes applies a klal (interpretive principle): the water libation is one specific instance that reveals a truth about all times and all matter.
The meaning is: since there is a time when water is poured, this serves as testimony for all times — that the wellspring is found even in the lower portion.
The fact that there is even one time of pure water libation testifies that the hidden spring of holiness is present in the lower world at all times.
Likewise the salt is testimony about all the species, that the wellspring is found within them, only that it is not yet clarified, as above.
Just as salt (drawn from the lower waters) accompanies every korban, so too the hidden spring of holiness exists in everything — it simply has not yet been brought to the surface.
And this testimony was entrusted only to Bnei Yisrael.
Only Bnei Yisrael are given the role of bearing witness to the hidden holiness within the lower world.
For who weeps and yearns over the concealment of holiness in the world, if not Bnei Yisrael?
Like the lower waters that cried out, only Bnei Yisrael feel pain over the hiddenness of Hashem in the world and long for its revelation.
Therefore Hakadosh Baruch Hu comforts them with special times and special things.
Hashem consoles those who yearn by granting them moments and mitzvos in which the hidden holiness is openly revealed.
And this is why the joy at the Simchas Beis Hashoeivah was so great.
The overwhelming joy of the water-drawing celebration flowed from witnessing the hidden spring of holiness revealed openly in the lower world.
Summary: The lower waters that "weep" to return to Hashem symbolize the holiness hidden within the physical world. Through the water libation and salt of Sukkos, Hashem reveals that this lower world contains the same kedushah as the upper world — a pure wellspring needing no refinement, a foretaste of the future geulah. Bnei Yisrael alone yearn over this concealment, and the great joy of the Simchas Beis Hashoeivah is the joy of seeing that hidden spring revealed.
