Torah as the source of unity
Simchas Torah · achdus · Shechinah · congregation of Yaakov · deveykus
And we rejoice on Shemini Atzeres with the Torah, for through the Torah we merit this shefa (Divine flow) and inner deveykus (clinging to Hashem).
The joy of Simchas Torah flows from recognizing that Torah is the channel through which we receive the innermost Divine bounty and our intimate bond with Hashem.
As the Midrash says there, by way of a parable: to one who marries the king's daughter. The king said, "I cannot part from my daughter; rather, wherever you go, make me one small chamber and I will dwell among you."
Hashem, like the king who cannot bear to be separated from his daughter (the Torah/Bnei Yisrael), asks that a "chamber" be made so that He can dwell among His people wherever they are.
And because on Sukkos Bnei Yisrael entered into the shade of Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
The sukkah represents entering beneath the protective "shade" of Hashem's presence.
And afterward, as it were, "Your parting is difficult for Me" — therefore "let there be a solemn gathering (atzeres) for you."
As Sukkos ends, Hashem finds it hard to part from us, so He keeps us back one more day — Shemini Atzeres — like the king asking for one small chamber to dwell among us.
And this is through the power of the Torah; the "one small chamber" is the aspect of achdus (oneness/unity).
The single chamber Hashem requests is the point of unity — and Torah is what creates that oneness in which Hashem can dwell.
And on Sukkos we come to this achdus by means of the sukkah and the lulav.
During Sukkos, the mitzvos of sukkah and the four species are external aids that draw us toward unity.
But now, "let there be a solemn gathering (atzeres) for you" — that we are able to gather together within our own essence.
On Shemini Atzeres we no longer need external mitzvos; the word "atzeres" (gathering) means we draw inward and reach unity from within ourselves.
And this is through the power of the Torah, as it is written: "Torah was commanded to us... the heritage (morashah) of the congregation of Yaakov" (Devarim 33:4).
This inner unity is achieved through Torah, which is described as the inheritance of the entire "congregation of Yaakov."
The meaning: "the congregation of Yaakov" refers also to the Torah, which is itself called "the congregation of Yaakov."
The phrase can be read so that the Torah itself is "the congregation of Yaakov" — the gathering point of all Yisrael.
For every Jew has a portion, an imprint, and a letter in the Torah; thus the Torah is "the congregation of Yaakov."
Since each individual Jew corresponds to a letter and a unique share in the Torah, the Torah is literally the assembly that contains all of Yisrael.
And according to the degree that the Torah is found within Bnei Yisrael, so do they come to achdus, and then the Shechinah rests among them.
The more deeply Torah lives within the people, the more they are unified, and that unity is precisely what draws the Shechinah to dwell in their midst.
And this is what follows: "And He was King in Yeshurun, when the heads of the people gathered together" (Devarim 33:5).
Immediately after describing the Torah as Yaakov's heritage, the pasuk speaks of Hashem's kingship being established precisely "when the people gathered" in unity.
This is the root that every Jew possesses, by which they become one through the Torah, as above.
Each Jew has a shoresh (root) in Torah, and when these roots join, the people become a single unified whole — fulfilling "He was King in Yeshurun."
Summary: The joy of Shemini Atzeres / Simchas Torah is the joy of Torah as the source of the inner Divine flow and of deveykus with Hashem. Like the king who cannot part from his daughter and asks for one chamber to dwell in, Hashem keeps Bnei Yisrael back for the "atzeres" so He can dwell among them. That dwelling-place is achdus: whereas on Sukkos unity is reached through external mitzvos, on Shemini Atzeres it is achieved inwardly through Torah — for each Jew is a letter in the Torah, "the congregation of Yaakov," and when these unite, "He is King in Yeshurun" and the Shechinah rests among them.
