Shemini Atzeres: supernatural joy and Torah-rain

"On the eighth day there shall be a gathering for you" (Bamidbar 29:35).

The Sefas Emes turns to Shemini Atzeres, the "eighth day," whose distinct character he will draw out.

For it is taught that the Hallel and the rejoicing are for eight days, and they expounded "and you shall be only joyful" (Devarim 16:15) to include the eighth night.

While other aspects of Sukkos last seven days, the full joy and Hallel extend to eight, with the verse's "only joyful" specifically adding the night of Shemini Atzeres.

For the joy must be for the sake of Heaven.

The added eighth-day joy underscores that simchah must be l'shem Shomayim — pure joy directed entirely toward Hashem.

And this is the hint that the Hallel and joy are eight: for "eight" is above nature, which is bound up in the seven days of building [of the world].

Seven represents the natural order (the seven days of creation), while eight transcends nature. The eighth-day joy is therefore a joy that rises above the natural world.

And it is written, "Let not [the wise man] glory... but only in this let the one who glories take glory... understanding and knowing Me" (Yirmiyahu 9:22-23).

The only worthy "glorying" — hislalus — is in knowing Hashem. This connects to Hallel ("praise"): true praise is the supernatural joy of knowing Hashem Himself.

And this is Shemini Atzeres.

Shemini Atzeres is precisely this above-nature joy of "knowing Me" — glorying solely in Hashem.

Therefore on this day there is no contact for any nation.

Because Shemini Atzeres is above nature, the nations — who are bound to the natural order — have no share or "grip" in it; it belongs to Bnei Yisrael alone.

For during the seven days of Sukkos the joy is from the side of nature, but on Shemini Atzeres it is the root of joy, as above.

The seven days of Sukkos carry a joy tied to the natural world (harvest, the elements), but Shemini Atzeres reaches the supernatural root from which all joy springs.

And there is a hint in the pasuk, "Clouds and wind but no rain — a man who glories in a false gift" (Mishlei 25:14).

The Sefas Emes reads this verse as a key: clouds and wind versus rain map onto the seven days versus the eighth, and onto false versus true "glorying."

For during the seven days there are "clouds and wind": the sukkah corresponds to the Clouds of Glory, and the four species are waved to the four directions [winds].

The seven-day mitzvos are bound to "clouds and wind" — the sukkah recalling the Ananei HaKavod and the lulav waved to the four winds — all still within the natural imagery.

And in this everyone has a grip.

Because these seven-day mitzvos are connected to nature, even the nations of the world can have some "hold" or connection to them.

But the "rain" of Shemini Atzeres was given over only to the people of truth, whose Hallel and joy is in "this," as above.

The "rain" — the true gift, beginning with the prayer for rain on Shemini Atzeres — is entrusted only to Bnei Yisrael, the "people of truth" whose glorying is in knowing Hashem.

Therefore "but no rain — for a man who glories in a false gift" — this refers to the other nations.

The nations are the "man who glories in a false gift": they may grasp the clouds and wind of the seven days, but the "rain" of the eighth day is not theirs.

Except for Bnei Yisrael, who are at the root of joy — to them the rain is given.

Only Bnei Yisrael, rooted in the supernatural source of joy, receive the "rain" of Shemini Atzeres.

And the essence of the "rain" is the Torah, which is compared to rain, for it satisfies the hearts of Bnei Yisrael as rain satisfies the earth.

The inner meaning of "rain" is Torah, "May my teaching drip like rain" (Devarim 32:2) — the Torah quenches the souls of Bnei Yisrael as rain waters the ground.

Therefore the inner dimension of rain is the Torah.

Physical rain has an outer body and an inner soul; its penimiyus (inner essence) is Torah.

And Bnei Yisrael, who cling to the inner dimension and who are the inner dimension of creation, to them comes the illumination of the Torah.

Because Bnei Yisrael are themselves the penimiyus of creation and cleave to the inner essence of things, they receive the inner light of Torah hidden within the rain.

And to the outer dimension of creation comes the plain, physical rain.

The nations and the outer world receive only the literal, material rain — the external shell — while Bnei Yisrael receive its inner Torah-light.

And likewise what is said, that on the festival we are judged concerning the water — in its inner dimension this is the Torah, which is called "water."

The teaching that "on the festival we are judged for water" (Rosh Hashanah 16a) has an inner meaning: the judgment is over our portion in Torah, which is called mayim.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael merit on the festival the illumination of the Torah, and the judgment is whether they are fit to receive the illumination of the Torah.

The festival's judgment "over water" is really a judgment of worthiness: are Bnei Yisrael fit vessels to receive the light of Torah this year?

For it is written, "Create for me a pure heart" (Tehillim 51:12), and afterward "and renew within me a proper spirit."

The verse's order is instructive: first one needs a pure heart, and only then can a "proper spirit" — the light of Torah and ruach hakodesh — be renewed within.

For a person must request a pure heart in order to be a vessel prepared to receive the Torah.

A purified heart is the prerequisite keli; without it one cannot properly receive the Torah's light.

And in these days, when the hearts of Bnei Yisrael have been purified, they automatically feel afterward the illumination of the Torah.

Having been cleansed through the avodah of the Yamim Nora'im and Sukkos, Bnei Yisrael now naturally sense the inner light of Torah, especially as Shemini Atzeres / Simchas Torah arrives.

And through this the festival fulfills, "And I will sprinkle upon you pure waters" (Yechezkel 36:25).

The "pure waters" sprinkled upon Bnei Yisrael are realized on the festival — both purification and the Torah-light that follows.

And nevertheless, since everything depends on the inner dimension, Bnei Yisrael have the choicest portion even in the external flow of abundance.

Because the inner essence governs the outer, those who possess the penimiyus also receive the best share of even the external, material blessings.

This is like what Chazal expounded on the pasuk, "a people that dwells alone, and is not reckoned among the nations" (Bamidbar 23:9).

The Sefas Emes brings the Chazal that explains how Bnei Yisrael partake of the world yet are not "counted" with the nations.

That they eat and drink together with the nations, yet it does not count against them in the reckoning.

Bnei Yisrael may share in worldly enjoyment alongside the nations, but because their essence lies elsewhere, this involvement does not define or diminish them.

And the reason is that this [worldly enjoyment] is not their essential contentment; their essential rest is the Torah.

Material pleasure is incidental to a Jew; his true menuchah and satisfaction is in Torah, so the physical does not register on his account.

And in the Mishnah: what is the difference between the disciples of Avraham Avinu... they eat in this world and inherit the World to Come (Avos 5:19).

The Mishnah contrasts the disciples of Avraham with those of Bilam: Avraham's students partake of this world while their true acquisition is Olam Haba.

The "inheritance" is the essential principal, while in this world they eat from the fruits.

The World to Come is the keren (principal capital); this-worldly enjoyment is only the "fruits" — the interest — leaving the essence intact.

And likewise during the days of Sukkos they are called "eating in this world," and nevertheless "it is not reckoned."

The seven days of Sukkos, with their nature-bound joy, are the "fruits" eaten in this world — yet they do not count against Bnei Yisrael, since their essence lies deeper.

And on Shemini Atzeres they are called "inheriting the World to Come."

Shemini Atzeres corresponds to the keren itself — the inheritance of Olam Haba — the supernatural essence rather than the worldly fruits.

And "a people that dwells alone" is fulfilled, as it says, "it shall be a gathering for you" (Bamidbar 29:35).

"For you" — for Bnei Yisrael alone — expresses "dwells alone": Shemini Atzeres is the intimate day reserved for Hashem and His people with no admixture of the nations.

And the three traits of the disciples of Avraham Avinu are fulfilled in Yisrael during these days.

The Mishnah lists three traits of Avraham's disciples — a good eye, a humble spirit, and a lowly soul — and the Sefas Emes maps each onto a day of this season.

For on Rosh Hashanah there is "a humble spirit" (ruach nemuchah), as it says, "the mitzvah [of shofar] is with a bent [shofar]" (Rosh Hashanah 26b).

Rosh Hashanah, with its bent shofar, embodies the humble spirit — bowing low before Hashem the King.

And Yom Kippur is "a lowly soul" (nefesh shefalah), for it is written, "you shall afflict your souls" (Vayikra 16:31).

Yom Kippur's affliction of the soul corresponds to the trait of a lowly, self-abnegating nefesh.

And on Sukkos there is "a good eye" (ayin tovah), for they bring offerings on behalf of the seventy nations.

The seventy bulls offered over Sukkos for the seventy nations of the world embody the "good eye" — generosity even toward others.

Therefore they merit the reward of eating in this world and inheriting the World to Come, as above.

Having embodied the three traits of Avraham's disciples through the season, Bnei Yisrael earn their reward: enjoying this world's "fruits" while their true inheritance — the supernatural essence — remains the World to Come.

Summary: The "eighth day," Shemini Atzeres, is a joy above nature — the seven days of Sukkos are nature-bound "clouds and wind" in which even the nations have a grip, but the "rain" of the eighth day, whose inner essence is Torah ("water"), is given only to Bnei Yisrael, the inner dimension of creation. Purified through the season's avodah, they become fit vessels to receive the Torah's light. Like the disciples of Avraham, who embody a humble spirit (Rosh Hashanah), a lowly soul (Yom Kippur), and a good eye (Sukkos), Bnei Yisrael eat the "fruits" of this world without it being reckoned against them, while their true inheritance — the supernatural intimacy of Shemini Atzeres — is the World to Come.
