Half-shekel awakens inner love
Shekalim · Tzedakah · Inner Point · Love · Teshuvah
"We announce concerning the shekalim and concerning the kilayim (forbidden mixtures)." (Shekalim 1:1)
The Mishnah teaches that at the start of Adar the court publicly announces both the half-shekel collection and the removal of forbidden mixtures from the fields — and the Sefas Emes will link the two.
For tzedakah is unique to Bnei Yisrael and is a testimony to the generosity (nedivus) of Bnei Yisrael, and therefore it is written: "Tzedakah exalts a nation." (Mishlei 14:34)
Charitable giving is the distinctive trait of Bnei Yisrael, evidence of their innate generosity, and it is what raises up the nation.
For "the kindness of the nations is sin" (Mishlei 14:34), and everything they do is for their own sake, whereas Bnei Yisrael are the ones prepared for tzedakah, as it is written: "Justice and righteousness in Yaakov You have made." (Tehillim 99:4)
The nations' "kindness" is self-serving, but Bnei Yisrael are intrinsically suited to selfless tzedakah.
Therefore the admixture of the forbidden mixtures (kilayim) is clarified by means of the shekalim.
The selfless giving of the half-shekel is what sifts out and clarifies the "forbidden mixtures" — the foreign, self-serving element.
And it was not for nothing that Hashem requested the donation of Bnei Yisrael, as Rashi says: a donation (nedavah) means "good will (ratzon tov)."
Hashem sought their gift not because He needs it, but to draw out the good will it expresses.
And Hashem knows the desire (ratzon) of His people Bnei Yisrael toward Him, for this generosity is always found within Bnei Yisrael.
Hashem recognizes that the will to give to Him is permanently present in every Jew.
And as it is written: "Over all transgressions love covers." (Mishlei 10:12)
This underlying love can cover over and outweigh every sin.
And just as all the sins cannot extinguish the love between Yisrael and their Father in Heaven —
No amount of sin can put out the essential love binding Bnei Yisrael to Hashem.
— so too it is within the power of every Jew always to awaken the point (nekudah) of yearning and desire toward Him.
Every Jew always retains the ability to reawaken his inner point of longing for Hashem.
And when one clarifies this below, in the heart —
When a person uncovers and reveals this inner point within his own heart —
— so too the love is awakened above.
His awakening below stirs a corresponding awakening of Divine love above.
And this is the meaning of: Moshe Rabbeinu found it difficult, and Hashem showed him a coin of fire. (Yerushalmi Shekalim; Tanchuma)
Moshe could not grasp how a person could "give" something to atone, so Hashem showed him a coin of fire — a hint to the fiery inner point.
"This is what they shall give." (Shemos 30:13)
"This" — pointing to the fiery coin — is what every Jew must give: the awakening of his inner fire.
The explanation: just as the "upper half-shekel," which is Hashem's love for us, is never cut off, as it is written, "Many waters cannot extinguish [love]" (Shir HaShirim 8:7) —
Hashem's "half" of the love is constant and unbreakable, like a love no flood can quench.
— consequently one should know from this that it is within the power of Bnei Yisrael below to awaken their own "half-shekel," as above.
Since Hashem's half is always present, Bnei Yisrael can always supply their matching half by awakening their love.
And since it was after the sin, Moshe Rabbeinu found it difficult to understand how they could awaken the generosity, and Hashem showed him from Heaven, as above.
After the Golden Calf, Moshe doubted whether the people could still rouse their generosity — so Hashem showed him the fiery coin to assure him the inner point endures even after sin.
Summary: The half-shekel embodies the selfless generosity that is uniquely characteristic of Bnei Yisrael, and it is this giving that clarifies and removes the foreign "forbidden mixture." Hashem's love for us is the unquenchable "upper half-shekel" that is never cut off; therefore every Jew always retains the power to awaken his matching "lower half-shekel" — the inner point of yearning — and his awakening below stirs Divine love above. The fiery coin Hashem showed Moshe assured him that even after the sin this inner fire can always be rekindled.
