Inner Light in Exile

במד' בלבת אש הה"ד אני ישנה ולבי ער כו'.
In the Midrash: “In a flame of fire,” as in the verse, “I sleep, but my heart is awake.”
The Sefat Emet opens by invoking the Midrash to introduce the theme of inner wakefulness during exile.
לבאר הענין כי עיקר הגלות הוא בבחי' המלבוש והחיצוניות ולא בהפנימיות שאין שם שליטת מגע נכרי.
To explain the matter: the essence of exile lies in the aspect of the garment and the external, not in the inner essence, where no foreign force can exert control.
Exile affects only the outer layers of the soul and nation, but the inner point remains untouched.
ולכן נשתלחו נשמות בנ"י בגלות שע"י מאור הפנימי שבהם. יכולין לגבור על החושך ולתקן הכל.
Therefore the souls of Israel were sent into exile, for through their inner light they can overcome the darkness and rectify everything.
The inner divine light within Israel empowers them to transform even the darkest places of exile.
ושליט בעולמו יודע שיש כח בנשמות ישראל לתקן כל אלה המקומות.
And the Master of the world knows that the souls of Israel have the power to repair all these places.
God sends Israel into exile deliberately, knowing their capacity for spiritual repair.
ולכן כתי' פתחי לי שהכל תלוי בבנ"י שבידם לפתוח תוך ההסתר שבגלות.
Thus it is written, “Open for Me,” for everything depends on Israel, who are able to open within the concealment of exile.
Israel’s initiative is needed to pierce the layers of concealment that exile creates.
ועי"ז עצמו ניתוסף חיבתן של ישראל כמ"ש אחותי רעיתי כו'.
And through this, the affection for Israel increases, as it is written, “My sister, My companion…”
The act of opening spiritual pathways in exile deepens the divine love for Israel.
דרשו חז"ל על ד' מלכיות יונתי ביון תמתי באדום ע"ש.
The Sages interpreted this regarding the four kingdoms: “My dove” in Greece, “My perfect one” in Edom.
Each exile reveals a unique form of Israel’s relationship with God.
והיינו שהם פתחים מיוחדים שפותחין בנ"י.
This means these are special openings that Israel creates.
Each historical exile offers a specific spiritual opening that only Israel can uncover.
ועי"ז ניתוסף חיבתן ומרויחין שמות הללו אחותי רעיתי כו'.
And through this their belovedness increases, and they earn these titles—“My sister, My companion,” etc.
The divine names of affection emerge from Israel’s spiritual efforts in exile.
ובאמת ההתלהבות בגלות הוא ביותר תוקף מרוב תשוקות בנ"י לחזור לאביהם שבשמים רק שא"י להתפשט.
In truth, the fiery enthusiasm in exile is most intense because of Israel’s yearning to return to their Father in Heaven, but it cannot spread outward.
The longing intensifies precisely because expression is constrained.
שמלבושים החיצונים המה חסרים בגלות כנ"ל.
For the external garments are lacking in exile, as noted above.
Outer channels of spiritual expression are impaired in exile.
וזה המשל בלבת אש מתוך הסנה.
This is the metaphor of a flame of fire within the bush.
The burning bush symbolizes inner fire without outer vessel.
הינו פנימיות בלי התלבשות מתוקן.
This is inner essence without proper outward manifestation.
It is spiritual vitality that cannot fully clothe itself.
ומתייחס לשינה שנשאר החיות מתאסף רק בלב וא"י להתפשט בהאיברים כן בגלות ישינה ולבי ער.
It corresponds to sleep, in which life-force gathers only in the heart and cannot spread through the limbs; so too in exile—“I sleep, but my heart is awake.”
Exile is like sleep: inner life remains, but expression is restricted.
ובגלות מצרים שהיו עדיין בלי מצות כמ"ש ואת ערום וערי'.
And in the Egyptian exile they were still without commandments, as it is written, “You were naked and bare.”
Before receiving the mitzvot, Israel lacked the garments of holiness.
היינו כנ"ל שתרי"ג מצות שמיוחדים לרמ"ח איברים וזה התיקון נחסר בגלות.
This is as above: the 613 commandments correspond to the bodily limbs, and this repair was lacking in exile.
The mitzvot serve as the vessels for expressing inner sanctity, but these were absent.
ומדכ' ערום משמע שבפנימיות לא נחסר להם כנ"ל.
And from the term “naked” it is implied that their inner essence was not lacking, as explained.
They lacked garments, not inner holiness.
ולכן מסיים הפסוק פשטתי את כתנתי איככה אלבשנה.
Therefore the verse concludes, “I have removed my garment, how shall I put it on again?”
Reclothing the inner essence is difficult once the outer garment is gone.
שע"י שהחיצוניות והמלבוש חסר תיקון בגלות.
For since the external and the garment lack repair in exile…
The outer structure remains damaged.
קשה להתחזק ולעשות דבר של קיימא בהרצון והתשוקה בלבד כנ"ל.
It is difficult to strengthen oneself and accomplish anything lasting through desire and yearning alone, as noted.
Yearning without vessels cannot create lasting spiritual impact.
The Sefat Emet teaches that exile affects only the outer layers while the inner essence remains pure and awake. Israel’s task is to open spiritual channels within concealment, thereby drawing divine affection and repair into the world. The burning bush symbolizes inner fire without outer form, reflecting the condition of exile where longing intensifies but expression is limited.
