Two luchos: paths of holiness and purity

בפסוק וזרקתי עליכם מים טהורים כו'.

On the pasuk, "And I will sprinkle upon you pure waters" (Yechezkel 36:25).

The Sefas Emes opens with the prophecy of purification through "pure waters," which he will identify with Torah.

שעיקר הטהרה ע"י התורה וביוהכ"פ הוריד לנו מרע"ה את הלוחות שניות.

That the essence of purification is through the Torah, and on Yom Kippur Moshe Rabbeinu brought down to us the second luchos.

True taharah comes through Torah. Yom Kippur is the very day Moshe descended with the second tablets, marking the bond between this day and the Torah's purifying power.

ואין מים אלא תורה והראשונות היו בבחי' קדושה כמ"ש וקדשתם היום ומחר.

And "water" means nothing other than Torah, and the first [luchos] were in the aspect of kedushah (holiness), as it is written, "and you shall sanctify them today and tomorrow" (Shemos 19:10).

Water always alludes to Torah. The first tablets, given at Sinai amid the command to "sanctify," belonged to the dimension of kedushah — the lofty standard of those who had not sinned.

והשניות היו בבחי' טהרה ונק' מים טהורים שהוא במדריגת בעלי תשובה.

And the second [luchos] were in the aspect of taharah (purity), and are called "pure waters," which is the level of baalei teshuvah.

The second tablets, given after the sin of the egel and the teshuvah that followed, belong to taharah — "pure waters" — the path of those who have returned and been purified.

טהור מטמא. שיש בתורה דרך מיוחד בבחי' צדיקים גמורים. ויש דרך מיוחד לבעלי תשובות:

"Pure out of the impure" (Iyov 14:4) — that within the Torah there is a special path in the aspect of complete tzaddikim, and there is a special path for baalei teshuvah.

The Torah contains two distinct roads: the way of kedushah for the perfectly righteous (the first luchos), and the way of taharah for those who, like one drawing "pure out of the impure," have repaired sin through teshuvah (the second luchos).

Summary: The essence of purification is through Torah, the "pure waters" of Yechezkel's prophecy. The first luchos embodied kedushah — the path of the perfectly righteous — while the second luchos, brought down on Yom Kippur after the sin and teshuvah, embodied taharah and are called "pure waters," the path of the baalei teshuvah.
