Torah's purifying power renewed each Shabbos

The verse "and He gave to Moshe" (Shemos 31:18) is placed next to the parsha of Shabbos, in accordance with what is said, that on Shabbos one should make it "all Torah" — for so it is written, "and on the seventh day He ceased and rested" (Shemos 31:17), [followed by] "and He gave to Moshe."
The Torah juxtaposes the giving of the luchos to Moshe with the command of Shabbos, teaching that Shabbos is to be devoted entirely to Torah. The sequence — first "He rested" on the seventh day, then "He gave to Moshe" — links Shabbos directly to receiving Torah.
For during the six days of work He made heaven and earth, and the day of Shabbos is dedicated to the Torah, and every Shabbos this giving is renewed.
The six weekdays correspond to the creation of the physical world, while Shabbos is set aside for Torah. The giving of the Torah is not a one-time event but is renewed every single Shabbos.
And likewise Moshe Rabbeinu gives the Torah to Bnei Yisrael every Shabbos.
Just as Hashem renews the giving of Torah each Shabbos, so too the power of Moshe Rabbeinu transmits Torah anew to Bnei Yisrael on every Shabbos.
As it is written, "A psalm, a song for the Shabbos day" (Tehillim 92:1) — whose initial letters spell "l'Moshe" (for Moshe).
The Sefas Emes finds a hint: the initials of "Mizmor Shir L'yom HaShabbos" allude to Moshe, linking Moshe's ongoing role in giving Torah specifically to the Shabbos day.
And it is written, "And you, speak to the Bnei Yisrael... 'Only My Shabbosos you shall guard'" (Shemos 31:13).
Hashem charges Moshe specifically ("and you") to transmit the keeping of Shabbos to Bnei Yisrael, underscoring Moshe's unique connection to Shabbos.
For Moshe Rabbeinu planted within Bnei Yisrael the illumination of Shabbos.
Moshe implanted the inner light of Shabbos into the souls of Bnei Yisrael, so that it remains rooted within them.
And the power of Moshe Rabbeinu is awakened within Klal Yisrael on the Shabbos day.
That implanted power of Moshe stirs to life within the entire nation each Shabbos, reactivating the Torah-light he placed within them.
And this is the neshamah yeseirah (additional soul) that descends on the holy Shabbos.
The awakening of Moshe's power is identical with the extra soul that comes down to every Jew on Shabbos Kodesh.
And the Sages established to read Parshas Parah on Shabbos.
The Sefas Emes now turns to why Chazal fixed the reading of Parah on a Shabbos, connecting purification to the theme of Shabbos and Torah.
For at the receiving of the Torah the souls of Bnei Yisrael were elevated and became attached to the Eitz HaChaim (Tree of Life).
At Matan Torah the souls of Bnei Yisrael rose to cling to the Tree of Life, the source of life itself.
And they were free from death, as it is written, "I said, you are angelic beings (elohim)" (Tehillim 82:6); for the neshamah has the power to transform the body into a living thing, as it is written, "and He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life... and man became a living soul" (Bereishis 2:7).
Attached to the Tree of Life, Bnei Yisrael became free of death — "you are elohim." The neshamah is able to infuse even the physical body with life, as at man's creation when the divine breath of life made him "a living soul."
Meaning: that it draws life even into the body.
"A living soul" means the neshamah channels its vitality down into the physical body, animating and elevating it as well.
And after the sin, when death gained dominion over us, that [exalted level of] neshamah departed.
With the sin of the Golden Calf (and earlier of Adam), death took hold and that elevated soul-level — which had made them free of death — withdrew.
For it cannot dwell in a place where there is death.
That exalted neshamah cannot rest where death is present, so it could no longer remain once mortality returned.
Only that Bnei Yisrael were given the purification of the [Parah Adumah] cow, a foretaste of the future tikkun.
As a partial remedy, Bnei Yisrael received the purification of the Parah Adumah, which removes the tumah of death and gives a taste of the complete rectification destined for the future.
As it is written, "who can produce a pure thing from an impure one?" (Iyov 14:4).
The verse alludes to the paradox of the Parah Adumah, which purifies the impure — drawing purity out of the very source of impurity, the tumah of death.
And it is written "yiten" (will produce/give) in the future tense, [pointing to the time] when "He will swallow up death forever" (Yeshayah 25:8) and all the sitra achra (the "other side," forces of impurity) will be removed from the world.
The future-tense "yiten" hints at the ultimate future, when death will be swallowed up forever and all the forces of impurity will be wiped out of existence — the complete purification of which Parah Adumah is a foretaste.
And in the mitzvah of the Parah, the power of the future is awakened, and the sitra achra flees, and one is able to be purified from tumah; and Shabbos too is a foretaste of the World to Come, therefore one can come to purity on Shabbos Kodesh.
Performing the Parah awakens a spark of that future power before which the forces of impurity flee, enabling purification. Since Shabbos is likewise a taste of the World to Come, it is a fitting time to attain purity — which is why Parshas Parah is read on Shabbos.
Now it is written, "This is the chok (decree) of the Torah" (Bamidbar 19:2).
The Torah introduces the Parah Adumah as "the chukas haTorah," which the Sefas Emes reads as teaching that purification comes specifically through the power of Torah.
To say that purity comes through the power of the Torah, as it is written, "the words of Hashem are pure words" (Tehillim 12:7) — that they do not receive tumah.
Calling it "the chok of the Torah" teaches that taharah flows from the Torah itself, whose words are intrinsically pure and incapable of contracting impurity.
As Chazal said, "'My words are like fire' (Yirmiyah 23:29) — just as fire does not receive tumah" [so too the Torah].
Chazal compare Torah to fire: just as fire cannot become tamei, the Torah is inherently immune to impurity, and so it has the power to purify.
Now, at the giving of the Torah, Bnei Yisrael literally became Torah itself.
At Matan Torah, Bnei Yisrael were so suffused with Torah that they themselves became Torah — and thus, like Torah, beyond the reach of impurity.
And so too with the first luchos, of which it is written "engraved (charus) upon the luchos" (Shemos 32:16), as explained elsewhere — the difference of the first luchos was that they were entirely "the work of God," to hint that even the bodies of Bnei Yisrael were transformed into spirituality, and there was no reality of tumah at all.
The first luchos were wholly Hashem's handiwork ("charus" / freedom), signaling that at that moment even the physical bodies of Bnei Yisrael became spiritualized, so that impurity had no foothold whatsoever.
But afterward, when the spirit of impurity came [back through the sin], nevertheless, through the imprint of the holiness of the Torah that remained in Bnei Yisrael, they at least merit to be purified from tumah by the power of the chok of the Torah.
Though impurity returned after the sin, an indelible "imprint" of Torah's holiness stayed within Bnei Yisrael. By that residual Torah-power they can still attain purification from tumah, even if not the total deathlessness of Sinai.
And so too even now, according to one's engagement in Torah, one merits purity.
This remains true in every generation: the more a person immerses himself in Torah study, the more he merits spiritual purity.
And is this not a kal vachomer (a fortiori argument): if tumah defiles through mere contact, all the more so the Torah, which is the very essence of purity — one who "touches" it merits purity.
If impurity spreads by simple contact, then surely the Torah, which is purity in its essence, transmits purity to whoever comes in contact with it. Connecting to Torah purifies just as touching tumah defiles.
That which is joined to something pure is pure.
By the very logic of purity laws, whatever is attached to a pure thing takes on its purity — so one who clings to the Torah, the source of purity, becomes pure.
And the essential meaning of taharah (purity) is like "pure gold" (zahav tahor), which is without dross.
Purity in its deepest sense means being free of any admixture of waste, like refined gold with no impurities mixed in.
And in truth the Torah is the life-force of everything.
The Torah is the inner vitality animating all of creation — everything draws its existence from it.
But when Bnei Yisrael merit and refine themselves, the portion of Torah within them becomes clarified, without dross — as explained elsewhere regarding the teaching of Chazal on "This is the Torah: a man (adam) who dies [in a tent]" (Bamidbar 19:14), that the Torah endures only in one who "kills himself" over it.
When Bnei Yisrael refine themselves, the Torah within them emerges pure and unalloyed, like pure gold. Chazal read "a man who dies" as teaching that Torah is acquired only by one who utterly gives himself over to it, "killing himself" through total self-sacrifice in its study.
Meaning: then he himself becomes Torah.
One who devotes himself to Torah with such total bittul (self-nullification) is transformed so that he himself becomes Torah, and thereby pure and immune to impurity.
And so it was at the giving of the Torah.
This is exactly what happened at Matan Torah, when Bnei Yisrael became Torah itself and rose above death and impurity.
And this is the aspect of the neshamah yeseirah that they received at Har Sinai, which descends every Shabbos Kodesh to Bnei Yisrael — called "the breath of life," attached to its root like living waters.
The extra soul of Shabbos is a continuation of what was received at Sinai: a "breath of life" still bound to its Source, flowing fresh like living waters. Through it, the purifying, life-giving power of Torah descends anew to Bnei Yisrael every Shabbos.
Summary: The giving of the Torah is renewed every Shabbos, when Moshe Rabbeinu's power — the neshamah yeseirah he planted in Bnei Yisrael — is reawakened. At Sinai, Bnei Yisrael clung to the Tree of Life and became Torah itself, free of death and impurity; though sin brought death and tumah back, an indelible imprint of Torah's holiness remained, by which they can still be purified. Since Torah is the very essence of purity (like fire and pure gold, immune to tumah), one who attaches to it — "killing himself" over it until he himself becomes Torah — draws down purity. Parshas Parah is read on Shabbos because both the Parah and Shabbos are foretastes of the future World to Come, when death and the sitra achra will be removed forever and that purifying "breath of life" flows like living waters from its root.
