Chukim Above Reason Bring Purity And Unity
Concerning the purification of the parah (the Red Heifer), which they established to be read on Shabbos: because the neshamah is pure, as it is said, "The soul that You placed within me is pure" (from the morning blessings).
The Sefas Emes connects Parshas Parah, which deals with purification, to Shabbos, because the inherently pure neshamah shines most on Shabbos.
And the essence of tumah stems from the bodily part.
Impurity belongs to the physical body, not to the pure soul.
Therefore the resha'im are called "dead" even in their lifetime, since the neshamah does not shine within them.
When the body dominates and the soul's light is blocked, a person is spiritually "dead" even while alive.
And therefore on Shabbos, which is the "day of souls," when the neshamah overpowers the body most of all.
Shabbos is when the soul gains the upper hand over the body's pull.
And it is called the neshamah yeseirah (the additional Shabbos soul).
This heightened spiritual presence on Shabbos is the extra soul a Jew receives.
Therefore one merits purity on it.
Because the soul dominates on Shabbos, it is a day on which one attains taharah.
Now, it is written, "This is the chukah of the Torah" (Bamidbar 19:2), and Chazal also expounded regarding the parah the verse "I said I would become wise" (Koheles 7:23).
The parah is the archetypal chok — a decree beyond human comprehension — about which even Shlomo HaMelech admitted the limits of wisdom.
And it is written elsewhere that the first sin, with the Eitz HaDaas (Tree of Knowledge), caused death.
The sin of the Tree of Knowledge is the source of mortality and impurity in the world.
For daas is the mixture of the soul within the body, and therefore it contains dross — the knowledge of good and evil.
Human understanding after the sin is blended with the body, so it is contaminated with a mixture of good and evil.
And the comprehension that a person attains through daas after the sin is not clear.
Post-sin human reasoning is clouded and unreliable.
And it contains a mixture.
Good and evil are intertwined within fallen human understanding.
And the keeping of the chukim, which are beyond human comprehension, is the aspect of the Eitz HaChaim (Tree of Life).
Fulfilling decrees we cannot rationalize reconnects us to the unblemished source — the Tree of Life rather than the Tree of Knowledge.
And from this comes the purity.
Submitting to the chok, above one's own reasoning, is what produces taharah.
And similarly in the sin of the Eigel (Golden Calf), there too they wished to grasp the Divine through their own understanding.
The sin of the Golden Calf was likewise an attempt to seize hold of G-dliness through human intellect.
And from this comes division, for the understanding of all people is not the same.
Relying on one's own intellect breeds fragmentation, since everyone reasons differently.
And Chazal hinted, "These are your gods" (Shemos 32:4) — they craved many deities for themselves.
The plural "these are your gods" reflects the fracturing that comes when each person follows his own conception of the Divine.
And therefore it is written, "for it was unrestrained (paru'a)" (Shemos 32:25) — that they had broken away from the unity of truth that they had possessed.
The word paru'a expresses how the sin tore them away from the unified bond with Hashem they had at Sinai.
And therefore after the rectification it is written, "And Moshe gathered" (Shemos 35:1) — that they returned to oneness.
The tikkun for the fragmentation of the Eigel was to re-gather Bnei Yisrael into unity.
And by the power of Shabbos, which is also of the nature of a chukah — "I have a good gift" (Shabbos 10b).
Shabbos, like the parah, is a chok and a pure gift from Hashem, not something earned by human reasoning.
And it does not depend on the avodah of man.
The kedushah of Shabbos is given from Above and does not hinge on a person's own efforts.
And therefore all of Bnei Yisrael become unified on Shabbos.
Because Shabbos is above individual reasoning, it unites all Jews equally — the opposite of the division of the Eigel.
And then they have deveikus (attachment) to the Eitz HaChaim.
On Shabbos, Bnei Yisrael cling to the Tree of Life — the unified, supernal source above the divisive Tree of Knowledge.
And so it is written, "I recall for you... the love of your bridal days, your following after Me... in a land not sown" (Yirmiyahu 2:2).
The praise of Bnei Yisrael is precisely that they followed Hashem into the wilderness without rational guarantees — pure faith over calculation.
For the keeping of the chukim — to be drawn after the commands of Hashem without a reason — is the aspect of the collective unity of Bnei Yisrael, and it is the aspect of Shabbos.
Following Hashem's decrees beyond reason is what binds Klal Yisrael together as one, and this is the quality of Shabbos.
Rest. As it is written, "And may you find rest, each woman in the house of her husband" (Rus 1:9).
Shabbos is menuchah, rest — and rest is found in attachment, like a wife at rest in her husband's home.
For the essence of a woman's rest is to lean upon and be drawn after her husband.
True menuchah comes from devoted dependence and following — the model for how Bnei Yisrael rest in their bond with Hashem.
And this was the beginning of the Holy One's choosing of Avraham Avinu, peace be upon him: "Go for yourself from your land... to the land that I will show you" (Bereishis 12:1).
Avraham's greatness was that he followed Hashem to an unknown destination on pure faith — the very quality of the chok and of Shabbos that the parsha is teaching.
Summary: The neshamah is inherently pure, and on Shabbos — the "day of souls" — the soul overpowers the body, so we attain taharah. Both the parah and Shabbos are chukim: decrees above human reasoning. Because the sins of the Eitz HaDaas and the Eigel came from trying to grasp the Divine through one's own intellect, which fragments people, the remedy is to follow Hashem's chukim beyond reason. This unifies Bnei Yisrael, binds them to the Eitz HaChaim, and is the essence of Shabbos — the same trusting devotion with which Avraham followed Hashem.
