Regarding the taharah (purification) of the parah (the Red Heifer), which is called a chukah, as the Midrash brings on the pasuk "I said I will become wise, but it is far from me" (Koheles 7:23) — that one cannot grasp the reason, for there are Torah, chukim (decrees), mitzvos, and mishpatim (laws).
The Sefas Emes opens by noting that the mitzvah of the parah adumah is labeled a chok, a decree whose reason lies beyond human reach. The Midrash applies Shlomo HaMelech's admission that wisdom remained "far" from him specifically to this mitzvah, dividing the Torah's commandments into those we understand (mishpatim) and those, like chukim, whose taam (reason) eludes us.
And the essential praise of Bnei Yisrael is that they merited the chukim.
Far from being a deficiency, the inability to explain a chok is precisely the source of Bnei Yisrael's greatness. Their distinction is that they were given mitzvos that transcend reason, demanding pure obedience to the ratzon Hashem.
Since they do not grasp the reason.
The Sefas Emes pinpoints why the chukim are such a praise: it is davka because their reason is hidden that they reveal something deeper about Bnei Yisrael's bond with Hashem.
If so, it is testimony that Bnei Yisrael have a share in their very essence in the Torah of Hashem.
Keeping a mitzvah we cannot rationalize proves that our connection to the Torah is not built on intellectual agreement. It flows from the etzem (essence) of the neshamah itself, an intrinsic portion in Hashem's Torah that exists prior to any reasoning.
For the chukos of the Torah are engravings and imprints upon the souls of Bnei Yisrael.
The Sefas Emes plays on the shared root of chok and chakikah (engraving): a chok is not an external command but something carved into the very nefesh of a Yid. The Torah's decrees are inscribed within us like letters etched in stone.
And therefore from this comes the taharah, for they are imprints and engravings in the essence, without change.
Because the chok is engraved into a person's essence, it possesses a permanence that produces purity. The taharah of the parah adumah draws from this unchanging, essential bond, which nothing can erase or alter.
For the reason can change, but the imprint is a chok that will not pass away.
A mitzvah grounded only in a rationale is vulnerable, since reasons shift with circumstance. But that which is engraved as a chok is fixed forever, echoing the language "a decree that shall not pass" (cf. Tehillim 148:6). The deepest connection is the one that bypasses reason entirely.
And there are four yesodos (elements), and afar (earth) is the lowest of them all.
The Sefas Emes turns to the four fundamental elements — fire, air, water, and earth — observing that earth occupies the lowest rung, seemingly the most lowly and inert of creation.
For all of them have movement, while the earth is silent and inert, without any movement; yet it is the most beloved of them all, and remains forever as it is, as it is written "and the earth abides forever" (Koheles 1:4) — and this is the chukas haTorah and the taharah of the ashes of the parah, as above.
The other elements are in constant motion, but earth alone is still and unchanging — and precisely this stillness makes it the most cherished and the most enduring. So too the chok: it is like the silent, motionless earth, beneath the reach of intellect's movement, yet for that very reason permanent and beloved. The afar parah (ashes of the Red Heifer) embody this principle, drawing taharah from the unchanging, engraved bond between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem.
Summary: A chok like the parah adumah cannot be rationalized, and that is its greatness — it is engraved (chakikah) into the very essence of Bnei Yisrael's souls, a bond deeper than reason. Like earth, the lowest yet most enduring of the elements, which remains motionless and unchanging forever, the chok's purity flows precisely from its fixed, essential, unalterable connection to Hashem.
