Torah refines the vessel of creation

In the Midrash on "and they shall send out from the camp" etc. (Bamidbar 5:2): "Remove the dross from the silver, and a vessel comes forth for the smith" (Mishlei 25:4).

The Sefas Emes opens from the Midrash linking the command to send the impure out of the camp with the verse about refining silver: removing the dross yields a finished vessel.

For it is written, "and the earth was tohu (formless)" etc. (Bereishis 1:2) — this is a mixture of waste matter that conceals the inner light (or hapenimi).

The primordial "tohu" represents an admixture of dross that hides the inner light buried within creation.

"And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light" (Bereishis 1:3) alludes to the Torah she-bichsav and the Torah she-be'al peh (Written and Oral Torah), for through the Torah the light is clarified out of the darkness.

The double "light" of creation hints at the two Toros; it is the Torah that refines and extracts the hidden light from the surrounding darkness.

And likewise within the totality of Bnei Yisrael they are "kli" (a vessel) — an acronym for Kohen, Levi, Yisrael.

The word kli (kaf-lamed-yud) itself spells the three groups of Israel — Kohen, Levi, Yisrael — who together form the refined "vessel."

Kohen, Levi, and Yisrael.

These are the three divisions that make up the single vessel of Klal Yisrael.

This is in the realm of souls.

The threefold structure first appears in the souls of the people.

So too in space (the world) there were three camps: the camp of the Shechinah, which is designated for the Kohen.

The same three-tier pattern is reflected in space, in the three camps of the wilderness — the innermost being the camp of the Shechinah, the Kohen's domain.

The camp of Levi.

The middle camp corresponds to Levi.

The camp of Yisrael.

The outer camp corresponds to Yisrael, completing the spatial parallel of the threefold vessel.

So too in time: Shabbasos, the Moadim (festivals), and Rosh Chodesh.

The same threefold pattern appears in time as well — the three categories of sacred days.

For all of this is accomplished through the power of the Torah, which teaches how to refine the vessel that HaKadosh Baruch Hu created in the work of Creation.

In soul, space, and time alike, it is the Torah that shows how to purify the "vessel" of creation and reveal the inner light.

Therefore Shabbos is a remembrance of the work of Creation, which was before it was said "and the earth was tohu."

Shabbos recalls the pristine state of creation as Hashem first made it, prior to the descent into the dross of "tohu."

Therefore at Kabbalas HaTorah there was no blemish in them, as it is written, "the Torah of Hashem is perfect (temimah)" (Tehillim 19:8).

When Israel received the Torah they were temporarily restored to a flawless state, for the perfect Torah heals every blemish.

For one who engages in Torah is healed of blemishes and impurities.

Toiling in Torah is itself the refining process that purges a person of his defects and tumah.

For even within a person's own soul there is a mixture on account of the body, as it is written, "dust from the ground" and "He breathed into his nostrils a soul of life" (Bereishis 2:7).

Every individual mirrors creation: a composite of bodily "dust" mixed with the Divine breath of the soul.

And this is the root of the four elements (yesodos).

This duality of dust and soul is the source of the four fundamental elements that compose a person.

Earth.

The element of earth corresponds to the body's "dust from the ground."

"He breathed into his nostrils" etc. includes fire, air (ruach), and water — corresponding to nefesh, ruach, neshamah (nuh-rah-nun).

The Divine breath encompasses the other three elements — fire, air, and water — which align with the three soul-levels nefesh, ruach, and neshamah.

And these three elements are in the power of the neshamah.

The three "higher" elements belong to the domain of the soul rather than the body.

But the body is inert (domem), the aspect of earth; for everything HaKadosh Baruch Hu created in the world is meant to teach wisdom from it, and therefore the element of earth is by nature heavy and silent, to hint that there is nothing better for the body than silence.

Earth's heaviness and stillness carry a lesson: just as earth is silent, so the body's ideal is silence and restraint.

That one should be sluggish in the affairs of this world.

The body should be deliberately slow and unhurried in pursuing worldly matters.

And the elements of the soul should prevail over the body.

When the body is quieted, the soul's higher elements gain mastery over it.

And this is the aspect of the Nazir — "when he sets himself apart (ki yafli)" (Bamidbar 6:2) — for the power of the neshamah prevails and he becomes holy (kadosh).

The Nazir exemplifies the soul's victory over the body: by separating himself he lets the neshamah dominate and thereby becomes sanctified.

And the Sotah is the opposite of this — that the body prevails over the soul.

The Sotah represents the reverse failure: the body and its desires overpower the soul.

Therefore she is examined by means of earth and water.

Fittingly, the Sotah is tested with earth and water — the very elements of the bodily "dust" and the soul's "water" whose proper order she has overturned.

Summary: Just as refining silver removes the dross to yield a vessel, the Torah — the "light" of Creation — clarifies the inner light hidden within the "tohu" of the world. Israel is itself that refined vessel (kli = Kohen, Levi, Yisrael), a threefold pattern reflected in souls, in the three camps of space, and in the sacred days of time; Shabbos recalls Creation before the descent into dross, and Torah heals every blemish. Each person too is a mixture of bodily "earth" and the soul's breath: the body, like silent earth, should be still and sluggish in worldly matters so that the soul's elements prevail — the path of the Nazir, who becomes holy — whereas the Sotah, in whom the body overpowers the soul, is therefore tested with earth and water.
