Fruit before leaves: every act is complete avodah

It is said in the Gemara: what is the meaning of "like an apple" (Shir HaShirim 2:3)? Why are Bnei Yisrael compared to an apple? Just as the apple's fruit precedes its leaves, so Bnei Yisrael placed "naaseh" (we will do) before "nishma" (we will hear). And Tosafos asked: but in the pasuk it is Hashem who is compared to the apple!

The Gemara (Shabbos 88a) explains that an apple tree produces fruit before its protective leaves — so too Bnei Yisrael declared "naaseh" (action) before "nishma" (understanding). Tosafos objects: in the actual verse the apple refers to Hashem, not to Yisrael.

And it appears that it is one matter — for the idea of "the fruit preceding its leaves" is similar to what is said in the name of the Baal Shem Tov: to see in every act a way to serve the Creator, may He be blessed, immediately, and not merely as a preparation. Even though there are things that are like a preparation — that one eats in order to have strength for the avodah of the Creator — nevertheless the tzaddik must make the eating itself an avodah and a tikkun, through the raising of holy sparks (ha'alas nitzotzos), etc.; see there in the sefer Kesser Shem Tov.

The Sefas Emes resolves Tosafos by saying both comparisons express one truth. The Baal Shem Tov taught that even acts that seem merely preparatory — like eating to gain strength — should themselves be turned into direct avodah. The tzaddik elevates the holy sparks (nitzotzos) within the food, so the act is not just a means but a service in its own right.

And the matter is that, although there are things that are a preparation — as the leaf is a preparation for the fruit, and likewise in all the workings of the world, one thing is a preparation for another, as the inanimate (domem) is for the plant (tzomeach), and the plant for the speaking being (medaber), etc.

On the natural plane, creation seems built as a ladder of preparations: minerals serve plants, plants serve animals and humans. Each lower level appears to exist only to enable the level above it.

Nevertheless, all this is only by way of the garment of nature; but from the side of the true Power that acts, whose action is truth, there is Elokus (Godliness) in every single thing, from the side of the truth of the Creator, may His Name be blessed, who brings all into being.

That ladder of "preparations" is only how things appear within the garment (hislavshus) of nature. From the perspective of Hashem, the true Maker whose every act is real and complete, there is Godliness fully present in each thing right now — not as a stepping-stone, but as an end in itself.

And this is the meaning of "truth" (emes) — without a fixed time and without a fixed limit.

"Emes" denotes that which transcends time and boundary. Hashem's truth is not bound to the sequence of cause-and-preparation; it is wholly present, beyond before-and-after.

And this is the way of the Torah, which is called "Toras Emes" (the Torah of truth).

Because Torah flows from this timeless, limitless truth of Hashem, it is called Toras Emes — and it carries that quality of wholeness into the world.

"The Torah of Hashem is perfect (temimah)" (Tehillim 19:8) — this is the aspect of wholeness, for there is no letter in the Torah that does not contain the entire Torah, by virtue of the unity of truth.

"Temimah" means whole and complete. Because the Torah is one unified truth, every single letter contains the whole — nothing in it is merely partial or preparatory.

And to this Chazal alluded when they said, "There is no earlier or later in the Torah" — for in every letter, everything is contained.

The principle "ein mukdam u'meuchar baTorah" (there is no strict chronological order in Torah) is not merely a technicality. It reflects that Torah is above time entirely: each letter holds the whole, with no "before" or "after."

And this is the meaning of "temimah" (perfect/whole).

This timeless wholeness, where each part contains the whole, is precisely what "temimah" expresses.

Therefore the conduct of the Holy One, Blessed is He, is distinguished "like the apple, whose fruit precedes its leaves."

Hashem's "conduct" is like the apple: the fruit (the goal, the reality) comes first, before the leaves (the preparation). With Hashem there is no mere means-to-an-end; the essence is present from the start.

And Bnei Yisrael, who are bound to the way of the Torah, placed "naaseh" before "nishma" — for in truth the "hearing" itself, although it serves to know how to fulfill the mitzvos of Hashem, is nevertheless in its own right itself an act of "doing." For had they said "nishma v'naaseh" (we will hear and we will do), it would have implied that all the hearing is merely a preparation for the doing.

Because Bnei Yisrael belong to this way of Toras Emes, they put "naaseh" first. The deeper point: even "shema" (understanding) is itself a deed, not just a means to the deed. Had they reversed the order to "nishma v'naaseh," it would have demoted hearing to a mere preparatory step.

But in truth, the hearing itself is a "doing."

By saying "naaseh" first, they declared that learning and understanding Torah are themselves acts of avodah — fruit, not just leaves.

And this is "engaging in Torah lishmah" (for its own sake) — that the very engagement in Torah is itself the performance of the avodah of the Creator, may His Name be blessed.

Torah lishmah means that the act of learning is not a preparation for some later service — the learning itself is the service of Hashem, complete in itself.

And therefore Rava answered that heretic: "We, who walk in wholeness (sheleimusa), of us it is written, 'The integrity (tumas) of the upright will guide them' (Mishlei 11:3)" — that we have dveikus in the perfect Torah of Hashem; and as it is written, "You shall be wholehearted (tamim) with Hashem your God" (Devarim 18:13). Therefore Bnei Yisrael are drawn after the aspect of wholeness and temimus, to have "the fruit precede the leaves," as explained.

The Gemara (Shabbos 88a) records that when a heretic mocked Bnei Yisrael for rashly saying "naaseh" before "nishma," Rava replied that we walk in sheleimus (wholeness/integrity). Because Bnei Yisrael cleave to the whole Toras Emes and are commanded "tamim tihyeh," they live by this principle of wholeness — placing the fruit before the leaves, treating every act as a complete service, not a mere preparation.

Summary: Reconciling the Gemara's two comparisons of the apple, the Sefas Emes teaches that both Hashem's conduct and Bnei Yisrael's "naaseh before nishma" express one truth: because Toras Emes is whole and timeless — every letter containing the whole — there is no such thing as a mere "preparation." Following the Baal Shem Tov, even seemingly preparatory acts must be made into direct avodah; thus the "fruit precedes the leaves," and even "hearing" is itself a complete deed.
