Teshuvah through the power of Torah

On the pasuk, "Return, Yisrael, unto Hashem your God; take with you words" (Hoshea 14:2-3).

The Sefas Emes opens with the navi's call to teshuvah, noting that we are told to "take words" with us — the avodah of teshuvah is bound up with words of Torah.

Teshuvah is uniquely given to Bnei Yisrael through the power of "I am Hashem your God," for He joined His Name to us at the giving of the Torah.

Because Hashem placed His Name upon us at Sinai, the ability to truly return is a special inheritance of Bnei Yisrael.

And through the power of the Torah one is able to return to Him, as Chazal say: "An aveirah extinguishes a mitzvah but does not extinguish Torah" (Sotah 21a); therefore, through the Torah one can rekindle the lamp of mitzvah from the light of the Torah.

Sin can darken the glow of a single mitzvah, but it can never put out the light of Torah — so the enduring light of Torah is what lets a person reignite the mitzvos he had dimmed.

Hashem prepared the Torah so that through it every ruin could be repaired; since the Torah is the craftsman through which everything was created, all the more so can everything be repaired through the Torah.

The very instrument used to build the world can certainly be used to mend it — Torah is both the blueprint of creation and the tool of tikkun (repair).

As it is said: the craftsman exclaimed in wonder — "To make it into a vessel I am able, but to repair it I am not able?!"

The One who fashioned the vessel in the first place surely has the power to fix it; the rhetorical astonishment makes the point that the Creator's Torah can repair what man has broken.

And it is written: "Is not My word like fire, and like a hammer that shatters rock?" (Yirmiyahu 23:29) — which burns away all the dross; the Maharsha in the fourth perek of Sanhedrin explains that a "sela" is a coin, and the imprint stamped upon a person by the physicality of nature and the yetzer hara — the Torah nullifies it and gives him a new form; see there.

Like fire, Torah consumes the impurities of nature and the yetzer hara; like a hammer it shatters the false "stamp" the material world presses onto a person and recasts him in a holy form.

And it is written: "Declaring the end from the beginning… and from aforetime that which is not yet done, saying, 'My counsel shall stand'… 'and I will do all My desire'" (Yeshayahu 46:10); the Midrash explains that His desire is to make His creatures righteous.

Hashem's ultimate "desire" in creation is to bring His creatures to tzidkus — to enable every person to become a tzaddik.

The meaning of "My counsel shall stand" is that the Torah raises a person from the dunghill up to the heavens; therefore it is called "reishis" (the beginning), for it elevates a person up to his very root and source.

Torah is called "the beginning" because it lifts a person all the way back to his spiritual root — restoring him to the original purpose for which he was created.

Therefore the Torah preceded the world, and everything was created through the Torah, so that everything could be repaired through the Torah; hence, before the act of creation He gave the Torah precedence.

The Torah was placed "before" the world precisely so that it could later serve as the means to repair the world from within.

"Take with you words" — for Bnei Yisrael are vessels fit to receive the rebuke of the Torah; it is called "devarim" (words/things) when a person is moved by them and is broken and subdued before those words.

"Words" carry real weight only when they penetrate and humble a person — bringing him to bittul (self-nullification) before the Torah's call.

And in truth this is the power of Yisrael, who are called "children."

The capacity to be inwardly moved and to return belongs to Bnei Yisrael precisely because of their status as Hashem's children.

For it is written: "With words a servant will not be chastened, for though he understands there is no response" (Mishlei 29:19).

A mere servant may grasp the words yet remain unaffected — words alone do not reach him.

The meaning is that he has no inner attachment with which to absorb the words.

Without a deep bond, the words wash over a person and leave no impression.

But Bnei Yisrael are prepared and receptive to words of Torah, and this is "take with you words."

As Hashem's children, Bnei Yisrael are inwardly ready to be transformed by Torah — which is why the navi tells them to "take words" along on the path of teshuvah.

Therefore Shabbos is especially suited to teshuvah, for on it the gate of the Torah is opened and the hearts of Bnei Yisrael are opened to receive the Torah.

On Shabbos the channel of Torah opens both above and within us, making it the choicest time for return.

Therefore on Shabbos there is the double portion of bread (lechem mishneh), a hint to the Written Torah and the Oral Torah, for on Shabbos the inner reasons of the Torah are revealed.

The two loaves correspond to Torah she-bichsav and Torah she-be'al peh — both dimensions of Torah open up on Shabbos.

And on it the heart of a Jew is opened to receive words of Torah.

Shabbos itself prepares the Jewish heart to take in Torah.

Therefore Shabbos is "a sign between Me and Bnei Yisrael" (Shemos 31:17) — it is a testimony upon Yisrael, just as the gates of Torah open above, for the Torah was given on Shabbos, and this is the reading of the Torah on Shabbos.

Shabbos bears witness to the bond between Hashem and Yisrael, mirroring how the heavenly gates of Torah swing open — which is why we read the Torah publicly on Shabbos.

And on it the hearts of Bnei Yisrael are opened to the Torah, and on Shabbos they are called "children."

Shabbos raises Bnei Yisrael to the elevated status of children, with hearts wide open to Torah.

For within Bnei Yisrael there are two aspects: that of a servant and that of a child.

A Jew relates to Hashem in two modes — as a servant who labors and as a beloved child.

A servant during the weekdays, and a child on the holy Shabbos.

During the workweek we serve like a servant fulfilling duties; on Shabbos Kodesh we rise to the intimate level of a child at home with his Father.

Summary: Teshuvah is the unique inheritance of Bnei Yisrael through the power of Torah, which both formed creation and can repair it, recasting a person in a new form and lifting him to his root. "Take with you words" works because Bnei Yisrael, as Hashem's children, are inwardly moved by Torah — and Shabbos, when the gates of Torah open and we rise from servant to child, is the choicest time for return.
