Torah Reaches Every Place

Ha'azinu · תרנ"ה (1894) · Essay 3

On the possuk, "For it is no empty thing for you" (Devarim 32:47).

The Sfas Emes opens with the possuk that teaches the Torah is never empty or irrelevant for Bnei Yisrael.

There is no word or letter in the Torah in which Bnei Yisrael do not have a portion.

Every single letter and word of the Torah contains a share that belongs specifically to Bnei Yisrael.

Just as the Holy One, Blessed is He, is found in every place, so too is He found within Bnei Yisrael.

Just as Hashem's presence fills every place in creation, that same all-pervading presence is invested within Bnei Yisrael themselves.

And through the Torah He created everything.

Since Hashem used the Torah as the blueprint to create the entire world, the Torah is woven into every place in existence.

Therefore Bnei Yisrael had to descend to all the places by the power of the Torah.

Because the Torah reaches everywhere, Bnei Yisrael were destined to go down into every place in order to draw out and reveal the Torah's power hidden there.

Summary: The Sfas Emes builds on the possuk "For it is no empty thing for you" to teach that there is no word or letter in the Torah that does not contain a portion belonging to Bnei Yisrael. Just as the Holy One, Blessed is He, fills every place in creation, that same presence is invested within Bnei Yisrael. And since Hashem created the entire world through the Torah, the Torah is embedded in every place. Therefore Bnei Yisrael had to descend into all the places, for it is through the power of the Torah that they reveal Hashem's presence wherever they go.
