Connecting Creation Through Torah
Regarding the Song of Ha'azinu, I have already written elsewhere that it is the rectification of the entire creation through Bnei Yisrael, for they were created to connect everything that exists in the earth to its root in the heavens.
The Sfas Emes opens by recalling that the Song of Ha'azinu serves to repair all of creation, and that Bnei Yisrael's role is to bind everything in the physical world back to its spiritual source in Shamayim.
As it is written, "And I have placed My words in your mouth" (Yeshayah 51:16) — this alludes to the dimension of Torah she'be'al peh, the Oral Torah, and the manner in which the creation is conducted.
The verse about Hashem placing His words in our mouth points to the Oral Torah, which is the channel through which the world is run.
And the continuation, "And in the shadow of My hand I have covered you" (Yeshayah 51:16), refers to the root of the neshamos of Bnei Yisrael in the heavens.
The phrase about being sheltered in the shadow of Hashem's hand refers to the hidden root of every Jewish neshamah, which remains above in the heavens.
Concerning this it is said, "He encircled him, He granted him understanding" (Devarim 32:10).
The pasuk describing how Hashem surrounded and gave understanding to Yaakov is brought as the source for this lofty relationship.
"To plant the heavens and to set the foundation of the earth" (Yeshayah 51:16) — for through this Bnei Yisrael are given the power to rectify the creation of heaven and earth.
Planting the heavens and founding the earth expresses that Bnei Yisrael are empowered to bring tikkun to the whole of creation, both upper and lower worlds.
And as Chazal expounded, "'You are My people' (ami) — read it as 'You are My partner' (imi)," in partnership with the Holy One, Blessed is He.
Chazal's reading of "My people" as "My partner" teaches that Bnei Yisrael are partners with the Ribono shel Olam in sustaining the world.
In line with the matter mentioned above, the Torah, the Holy One, Blessed is He, and Yisrael are all one.
From all this emerges the principle that the Torah, the Holy One, Blessed is He, and Yisrael are bound together as one.
And within the hearts of Bnei Yisrael there are imprints that correspond precisely to the letters of the Torah.
Because of this oneness, every Jew carries within his heart spiritual imprints that line up exactly with the letters of the Torah.
This is like the matter of the two hundred forty-eight limbs and the sinews, which are allusions to the positive mitzvos and the prohibitions of the Torah.
Just as the limbs and sinews of the body correspond to the positive mitzvos and the prohibitions, so do the inner imprints of the heart mirror the Torah.
And it is written, "Set your hearts" (Devarim 32:46), and there too it is written, "And you shall place these My words upon your hearts" (Devarim 11:18), for they have a connection to one another, as explained above.
The Torah's command to set our hearts, paired with the charge to place Hashem's words upon our hearts, shows that the heart and the Torah are inherently joined.
Summary: In this piece the Sfas Emes explains that the Song of Ha'azinu accomplishes the rectification of all creation through Bnei Yisrael, whose mission is to connect everything in the earthly world to its root in Shamayim. Drawing on the pesukim in Yeshayah about Hashem placing His words in our mouth, sheltering us in the shadow of His hand, and planting the heavens and founding the earth, he shows that the Oral Torah and the hidden root of the neshamah empower Bnei Yisrael to repair both heaven and earth as Hashem's partners. This leads to the great principle that the Torah, the Holy One, Blessed is He, and Yisrael are all one. He concludes that this oneness is embedded within every Jew, for the heart bears imprints that correspond precisely to the letters of the Torah, just as the limbs and sinews mirror the mitzvos. Thus the command to place Hashem's words upon our hearts reflects the deep, inherent bond between the heart of a Jew and the Torah itself.
