Shabbos draws from above to aid teshuvah

Furthermore, Shabbos assists teshuvah, for Chazal said: "In the place where baalei teshuvah stand, even complete tzaddikim (tzaddikim gemurim) cannot stand." (Berachos 34b)

The Sefas Emes opens with the well-known teaching that baalei teshuvah reach a level higher than even perfectly righteous tzaddikim, and he will explain how Shabbos shares this quality and therefore aids teshuvah.

פי' כי צדיקים מקיימים העולם כדכ' צדיק יסוד עולם.

The explanation: tzaddikim sustain the world, as it is written, "a tzaddik is the foundation of the world (yesod olam)." (Mishlei 10:25)

The tzaddik functions as the foundation that upholds the existing world — he operates within and supports the created order.

אבל בע"ת מושכין דרך חדש למעלה מן העולם כדאיתא תשובה קדמה לעולם.

But baalei teshuvah draw a new path from above the world, as it is brought: "Teshuvah preceded the world." (Pesachim 54a)

The baal teshuvah does not merely sustain the existing world; he draws down an entirely new channel from a realm above creation — from teshuvah, which existed before the world itself.

וכ"כ חכמות בנתה ביתה כו' חצבה עמודי' שבעה כו' ואח"כ מי פתי יסור הנה שהוא בחי' תשובה למעלה משבעה עמודים.

And so it is written, "Wisdom has built her house… she has hewn her seven pillars…" (Mishlei 9:1) and afterward, "Whoever is naive, let him turn in here" (Mishlei 9:4) — which is the aspect of teshuvah, above the seven pillars.

The "seven pillars" represent the natural order of the world (the seven days). The subsequent call to "turn in here" (yasur — related to teshuvah) points to a level above those seven pillars — the supernal source of teshuvah that transcends creation.

ושבת יש בו מאור שלמעלה משבעת הימים מעין עוה"ב עלמא דחירות שאין הפגם מגיע שם.

And Shabbos contains a light that is above the seven days, resembling Olam Haba — the "world of freedom" (alma d'cheirus), where blemish (pegam) cannot reach.

Shabbos carries a light from above the seven days of the week, a taste of the World to Come — a realm of freedom untouched by any spiritual blemish or damage.

Therefore it assists teshuvah.

Because Shabbos itself draws from this realm above the seven days — the same supernal source from which teshuvah flows — it lends its power to a person's teshuvah, helping him reach beyond the limitations of the world.

Summary: Baalei teshuvah stand higher than complete tzaddikim because, while tzaddikim sustain the existing world as its foundation, baalei teshuvah draw down an entirely new path from above creation — from teshuvah, which preceded the world.
