Torah as the ultimate refinement
Yitro · Mattan Torah · refinement · trials · purpose of creation
On the pasuk, "I am Hashem your God, who took you out of the land of Mitzrayim" (Shemos 20:2).
The Sefas Emes opens with the first of the Aseres Hadibros, focusing on why Hashem identifies Himself through the Exodus.
The commentators asked: why is "who created you" not mentioned?
The classic question: why does Hashem introduce Himself as the One who took us out of Mitzrayim rather than as the One who created us?
But this is not a difficulty, for they counted and concluded: it would have been better for a person not to have been created.
Chazal famously concluded that, given the spiritual dangers of life, it might have been preferable for a person never to be born — so creation alone is not yet cause for Hashem's praise.
"Now that he has been created, let him examine his deeds" — let him probe his deeds — see there, the first chapter of Eruvin (13b).
The Gemara's conclusion is that, since we are here, the purpose is self-scrutiny: to "examine" and then to "probe" one's actions — two distinct levels of accounting.
Now, through Yetzias Mitzrayim, Bnei Yisrael were set right in the aspect of "let him examine his deeds."
The Exodus accomplished the first level — "examining" one's deeds — a basic purification.
And through receiving the Torah, the aspect of "let him probe his deeds" — and this was the purpose of Creation.
Mattan Torah achieved the deeper level — "probing" one's deeds — and this fulfillment is the very purpose for which the world was created.
And it is written "in the third month" — for first there was the creation of the world, afterward the events of Mitzrayim, and afterward the receiving of the Torah; this is the third foundation, which includes everything.
The Torah being given "in the third month" hints at three stages: Creation, then Mitzrayim, then Mattan Torah. This third stage is the all-encompassing foundation that gives meaning to the first two.
And it is written, "A refining pot is for silver and a crucible for gold, but Hashem tests hearts" (Mishlei 17:3) — these are three kinds of paths and trials.
The verse lists three modes of refinement, which the Sefas Emes maps onto the three stages and three avenues of avodah.
As it is taught, that there is a trial in wealth and a trial in poverty.
A person can be tested through ease and abundance, or through hardship and lack — different types of nisayon.
Similarly, "a refining pot for silver" is the aspect of "the world is built through chesed" (Tehillim 89:3), and this is the path of Avraham Avinu, peace be upon him.
One path of refinement is through kindness and love — the way of Avraham, who served Hashem through chesed, by which "the world is built."
And the events of Mitzrayim are the aspect of "a crucible for gold" — the path through suffering.
A second path of refinement is through yissurim (afflictions), exemplified by the crucible of Egyptian bondage.
And although ahavah (love) and yirah (awe) are great pillars, nevertheless the Torah is the purpose of everything and the complete refinement, for they are "the words of the living God," as it says, "I am Hashem your God."
Love and awe are mighty pillars of avodah, yet the Torah surpasses them as the ultimate refinement, because the Torah is itself the living word of Hashem — "I am Hashem your God."
And this is "but Hashem tests hearts." And see in the Zohar HaKadosh on the pasuk, "You shall not make with Me gods of silver, etc." (Shemos 20:20).
The Torah is the deepest test, the "testing of hearts," which transcends the trials of wealth and suffering alike. He refers us to the Zohar for further depth on the verse that immediately follows the Dibros.
Summary: Hashem identifies Himself by the Exodus rather than Creation because mere existence is not yet a fulfillment — life's purpose is self-scrutiny. Three stages refine us: Creation, Mitzrayim, and Mattan Torah, paralleling the three refinements of "silver, gold, and the testing of hearts." Avraham's chesed and the crucible of suffering are great paths, but the Torah itself — the living word of Hashem — is the ultimate and complete refinement and the true purpose of Creation.
