Doing Before Hearing Torah
“Doers of His word, to listen to the voice of His word.”
The Sefat Emet focuses on the order: first ‘doers,’ then ‘to listen,’ suggesting action awakens the capacity to hear the divine voice.
First comes doing, and only afterward listening.
He explains that practical action precedes and enables deeper spiritual comprehension.
For the children of Israel awaken the word of God that exists everywhere.
Human deeds aligned with holiness reveal the divine presence embedded throughout creation.
And it is written many times: “You shall surely listen to My voice.”
This repetition implies an always‑present divine voice awaiting human attunement.
Meaning: there is a voice that is always audible.
The Torah’s voice constantly permeates reality, even when unnoticed.
And this is the Torah through which all creation was made.
Creation itself is an expression of the primordial Torah.
And according to a person’s deeds, when they follow the path of Torah…
One’s actions determine how fully the divine voice becomes revealed in their life.
As it says: “All that God has spoken, we will do.”
The people affirmed that all actions contain the power of God’s speech.
Meaning: it became clear to them that all deeds hold the power of God’s word, which animates everything.
Every action derives its vitality from divine speech.
Thus the word of God was revealed to them, namely the Ten Commandments.
The revelation at Sinai made this hidden divine animation explicit.
As it is written: “And God spoke… saying.”
The phrasing hints at layered levels of divine speech.
Meaning: the Ten Utterances of creation are included within them.
The Ten Commandments correspond to and rectify the Ten Creative Utterances.
And the Ten Commandments were the repair of the Ten Utterances.
Sinai restores creation to its intended harmony.
And after the Exodus this voice and speech were revealed so fully that even Jethro heard.
The divine voice expanded outward, reaching the nations.
For “He brought them out…” is the reason that once Israel left Egypt the voice of Torah was revealed.
Redemption opened the channel for divine communication.
And likewise, on Shabbat the Torah is given.
Each Shabbat is a renewal of the Sinai revelation.
For on Shabbat all labor ceases, and this is a repair of action.
Rest elevates and purifies weekday deeds.
Therefore it is written: “A remembrance of the Exodus.”
Shabbat recalls the liberating force that revealed God’s voice.
For on Shabbat the spiritual aspect of the Exodus awakens.
The day itself carries redemptive energy.
As it says: “One who delights in Shabbat is given a boundless inheritance.”
Shabbat opens spiritual expansiveness beyond all constraints.
Therefore this voice is opened on Shabbat.
The divine voice is most accessible on this holy day.
“Shemòa tishme‘u beqolí” (Listen, you shall listen to My voice) has initials that spell Shabbat.
The verse itself hints to Shabbat as the gateway to hearing the divine voice.
Therefore it is taught that on Shabbat Moshe returns to Israel the crowns of ‘We will do and we will hear.’
Shabbat restores the original spiritual clarity and commitment of Sinai.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that human action awakens the ever‑present divine voice embedded in creation. The revelation at Sinai, renewed each Shabbat, makes this inner Torah audible, repairing the world and restoring Israel to the spiritual state of “we will do and we will hear.”
