“In the Midrash: ‘The weight of a stone…’”

The Sefat Emet opens by referencing a Midrash about the heaviness or weightiness of creation.

כי הנה ביצ"מ הי' תיקון כל מעשה בראשית.

“For behold, in the Exodus from Egypt there was a rectification of all the works of Creation.”

The redemption from Egypt served as a cosmic repair of the entire creation.

ואמו"ז ז"ל אמר כי באמצעות העשר מכות נעשו מעשרה מאמרות עשרת הדברות כי מאמר הוא בכלל ודיבור הוא בפרט כו'.

“And my grandfather, of blessed memory, said that through the Ten Plagues the Ten Commandments were formed out of the Ten Utterances, for an ‘utterance’ is general and a ‘statement’ is particular…”

The Ten Plagues transformed the broad creative utterances of Genesis into the focused covenantal words of Sinai.

והענין הוא כי הוצרך להתברר תערובת טוב ורע.

“And the matter is that the mixture of good and evil needed to be clarified.”

The world’s moral mixture required separation and purification.

והרע ניתן למצרים בעשרה המכות.

“And the evil was given to Egypt through the Ten Plagues.”

Egypt received the portion of evil that was being removed from the world.

ובנ"י קיבלו הטוב שהוא התורה.

“And the children of Israel received the good, which is the Torah.”

Israel inherited the purified goodness, namely Torah.

כי הכל לכבודו ברא.

“For all was created for His glory.”

Creation has a single divine purpose: the revelation of God’s glory.

אבל התחתונים צריכין לברר זאת ובנ"י בגלות מצרים ביררו זה העדות.

“But the lower beings must clarify this, and Israel in the Egyptian exile clarified this testimony.”

Human beings must actively reveal creation’s purpose—Israel accomplished this in Egypt.

וכ' את ה' האמרת וה' האמירך כו' שבנ"י מבררין כי קיום כל הבריאה ע"י עשרה מאמרות.

“As it is written: ‘You have affirmed the Lord, and the Lord has affirmed you,’ meaning that Israel clarifies that all creation stands through the Ten Utterances.”

Israel testifies that the world endures by virtue of the divine creative speech.

וכמ"ש במשנה ליתן שכר טוב לצדיקים שמקיימין העולם שנברא בע"מ.

“As taught in the Mishnah: ‘To give good reward to the righteous who sustain the world that was created with ten utterances.’”

The righteous support creation by aligning it with its original design.

והש"י כביכול מעיד על בנ"י כי כל המאמרות ובריאת העולם הי' בשביל בנ"י.

“And the Holy One, as it were, testifies about Israel that all the utterances and the creation of the world were for the sake of Israel.”

God affirms Israel’s central role in the purpose of creation.

ואלה הבירורים הם גם היום בכל יום ויום כמ"ש א"ה האמרת היום כו'.

“And these clarifications occur also today, each and every day, as it is written: ‘Today you have affirmed…’”

The process of separating good from evil continues daily.

וכ"כ ולמען תספר באזני בוב"ב.

“And likewise it is written: ‘So that you may recount in the ears of your son and grandson.’”

The task of clarification is transmitted across generations.

שנתן זה הבירור לבנ"י לדורות.

“For this clarification was given to Israel for all generations.”

The mission of spiritual discernment is eternal.

וכפי הבירור כך זוכין להתחדשות בכל יום כמו שזכו אחר הגלות לפרשת החודש הזה לכם.

“And according to the degree of clarification, so does one merit renewal each day, just as Israel merited after the exile the portion ‘This month shall be for you.’”

Daily renewal depends on one’s spiritual purification, analogous to the renewal of the moon granted after Egypt.

ושמעתי מפי אמו"ז ז"ל כי אין כל חדש תחת השמש ורק ע"י מסירת נפש שמבטלין הטבע זוכין להתחדשות שלמעלה מן השמש.

“And I heard from my grandfather that ‘there is nothing new under the sun,’ and only through self‑sacrifice, which nullifies nature, does one merit renewal above the sun.”

True renewal transcends nature and arises from devotion that breaks natural limitation.

ולכן כ' ואהבת את ה"א בכל לבבך נפשך מאודך.

“Therefore it is written: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and might.’”

Love expressed with total commitment enables transcendence.

אח"כ והיו הדברים האלה א"א מצוך היום.

“Afterward: ‘And these words which I command you today.’”

The Torah’s daily freshness follows from wholehearted devotion.

ודרשו חז"ל בכל יום כחדשים.

“And the Sages taught: ‘Each day they shall be as new.’”

The Torah must be experienced with continual renewal.

והיינו שע"י מסירת נפש ויוצאין מן הטבע.

“Meaning that through self‑sacrifice one goes beyond nature.”

Renewal comes from transcending natural constraints.

זוכין להתחדשות והארת התורה בכל יום ויום עכ"ל ז"ל.

“One merits renewal and the illumination of Torah each and every day.”

Torah’s light becomes fresh daily when one rises above nature.

וזה כוונת המדרש שבנ"י מבררין תכלית מעשה בראשית ועומדין נגד הרשעים וכעס אויל כו'.

“And this is the intent of the Midrash: that Israel clarifies the purpose of Creation and stands against the wicked, and the anger of the fool…”

Israel’s role is to articulate creation’s purpose and resist forces of distortion.

The Sefat Emet teaches that the Exodus purified creation by separating good from evil. The Ten Plagues transformed the Ten Utterances into the Ten Commandments. Israel’s mission of clarification continues daily, enabling spiritual renewal beyond nature.
