Torah as freedom and true wisdom
Matan Torah · Yisro · Chochmas HaTorah · Cheirus · Neshamah
Concerning Yisro's "hearing" in connection with the receiving of the Torah, as it is taught: "Yisro heard" — and he was broken and subdued.
When Yisro heard about Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah), the loftiness of the Torah broke and humbled him — his own worldly stature was nullified before it.
And this was the completion of yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus) and the geulah (redemption) — that the maidservant should not inherit the place of her mistress.
The subduing of worldly wisdom completes the redemption: the "lower" forces of nature must not usurp the rule that belongs to the higher wisdom of the Torah.
For in truth, all the wisdoms in the world exist only to be a preparation for the wisdom of truth — the chochmah (wisdom) of the Torah.
Every form of human knowledge has no purpose of its own; it serves only as a stepping-stone toward the true wisdom found in the Torah.
As it is written: "Behold, the fear of Hashem — that is wisdom" (Iyov 28:28).
Real wisdom is not detached intellect; its essence is yiras Hashem (the fear of Hashem), which is the goal toward which all other wisdom points.
And it is brought down that "hen" in the Greek tongue means "one."
The very word "hen" hints that this wisdom is singular and unified — it is the one true wisdom.
That is to say: the wisdom of the Torah is unique and singular, while all the other wisdoms are merely sparks of that primary wisdom.
The Torah is the one root wisdom; every other discipline is only a scattered spark that derives from it.
And in truth, the existence of everything is through wisdom.
All of creation stands and is sustained by this divine wisdom.
As it is written: "With wisdom Hashem founded the earth" (Mishlei 3:19).
The world itself was established through chochmah, proving that wisdom is the very foundation of existence.
But this is wisdom that clothes itself within nature.
The wisdom that sustains the world is hidden inside the garments of the natural order, concealed within physical reality.
Whereas the wisdom of the Torah is the unity of the very essence of wisdom.
Torah is not wisdom dressed up in nature; it is the pure, unified essence of wisdom itself.
As Chazal said: when one sees the wise men of the nations, one blesses "...Who has given of His wisdom to flesh and blood."
For the nations' wisdom we say He gave "of" His wisdom — only a portion, a derivative spark.
And when one sees the wise men of Yisrael, one blesses "...Who has apportioned of His wisdom to those who fear Him."
For the wise of Yisrael, the wording shifts to "apportioned a share" — a genuine portion of His own wisdom granted to those who fear Him.
For this is dveikus (cleaving) to Him, may He be blessed, as it is written: "For Hashem's portion is His people" (Devarim 32:9).
The wisdom given to Yisrael is itself a bond of clinging to Hashem, since Bnei Yisrael are His own portion.
And in truth, the Torah is a simple intellect, separated from matter.
The Torah in its essence is pure, unmixed intellect, entirely divorced from physicality.
But we, in this world (olam hazeh), are sunk into matter.
Because we are embedded in the physical world, we are bound up with corporeality.
We are unable to perceive this wisdom.
In our physical state we cannot directly sense the pure intellect of the Torah.
Only by means of the wisdoms that can be sensed.
We can only approach the higher wisdom indirectly, through tangible forms of knowledge that our senses can grasp.
But Bnei Yisrael, when they stood at Har Sinai, where they were like angels —
At Matan Torah the people rose to an angelic level, freed for that moment from the limitations of the body.
— merited to receive the very essence of wisdom.
In that elevated state they could receive Torah as pure essential wisdom, not merely its sensible reflections.
Therefore, "Bereishis" begins with the letter beis.
The account of creation opens with beis (the number two), signifying multiplicity and the composite nature of the created world.
And the Aseres HaDibros (Ten Commandments) begin with alef.
The Torah given at Sinai opens with alef (the number one), signifying absolute oneness and unity.
This is to teach that the structure of the world and its workings is not the very essence of unity.
The created order, built from plurality, is not itself the true Oneness.
Unlike the Torah, which is a singular, unique wisdom.
Only the Torah expresses the pure, undivided Oneness that the world itself does not.
And they could not receive this Torah until after yetzias Mitzrayim, when they were elevated to become free men.
Only once Bnei Yisrael had been raised to the status of free people through the Exodus were they fit to receive the Torah.
As it is written: "I am Hashem your God, Who took you out of the land of Mitzrayim, from the house of bondage" (Shemos 20:2).
The opening of the Aseres HaDibros itself ties receiving the Torah to being taken out of slavery.
The meaning of "from the house of bondage" is: not to be enslaved to physical matter.
True freedom from "the house of bondage" means being liberated from servitude to one's own body and the material world.
For this world is called "the house of bondage," since the penimiyus (inner dimension) is not revealed except through garments and contractions.
Olam hazeh enslaves because its inner spiritual light is always hidden behind layers of concealment and limitation.
And Chazal said that this world resembles an antechamber — and that is "the house of bondage."
Like a corridor leading to a palace, olam hazeh is only a passageway, a place of servitude that prepares one for the true destination.
But concerning Bnei Yisrael it is said: "Fortunate is the one You choose and draw near... we shall be sated with the goodness of Your house" (Tehillim 65:5).
Bnei Yisrael are not left in the antechamber of servitude; they are drawn near to dwell in Hashem's "house" and partake of its inner goodness.
And it is written: "Fortunate are those who dwell in Your house" (Tehillim 84:5).
Whereas the world is a mere corridor of bondage, Bnei Yisrael merit to be settled dwellers within Hashem's house.
And something of this nature appears in the Zohar HaKadosh, page 82b.
The Sefas Emes notes that the Zohar expresses a similar idea in that location.
And it is taught: "There is no free man except one who is occupied with Torah."
Chazal teach that genuine freedom is found only through engagement in Torah.
For it is written: "engraved (charus) upon the Tablets" (Shemos 32:16) — read it as "freedom" (cheirus).
The word "charus" (engraved) is read as "cheirus" (freedom), teaching that the Luchos are the source of true liberty.
That is: the letters of the Torah are an aspect of freedom, for they are a simple intellect separated from all matter, as explained above.
The letters of the Torah embody freedom precisely because they are pure, immaterial intellect with no admixture of physicality.
Therefore they are called "cheirus" (freedom), for the letters of the Torah are not like those of other languages.
Unlike ordinary alphabets, the Torah's letters are not mere conventional symbols.
Rather, the life-force within them is far, far higher than the letters themselves.
The inner vitality contained in the Torah's letters utterly transcends their outer written form.
For they are only hints to the life-force that is hidden within them.
The written letters merely point to the concealed divine vitality they contain.
Therefore, one who is occupied with Torah is a free man.
By engaging with the Torah, a person connects to that immaterial life-force and thereby attains true freedom.
For the matters contained in the Torah are the very essence of freedom, as stated above.
The content of Torah is freedom itself, so one who learns it becomes free.
And this is the meaning of "Anochi Hashem your God," as Chazal hinted in the Gemara: "Anochi" — "I Myself wrote it and gave it" — meaning that these are the words of the living God.
The word "Anochi" is expounded as "I Myself wrote and gave," teaching that the Torah's words are literally Hashem's own living essence.
Therefore, through engagement in Torah one comes to freedom.
Since the Torah is Hashem's own living word, learning it draws a person into that realm of freedom.
As it is stated in the Mishnah: "Whoever accepts upon himself the yoke of Torah, they remove from him the yoke of government and the yoke of worldly affairs (derech eretz)" (Avos 3:5).
Taking on the yoke of Torah frees a person from the burdens of political subjugation and the pressures of material livelihood.
And this is the meaning: that through accepting His Godliness, may He be blessed, there is yetzias Mitzrayim — and this corresponds to the removal of the yoke of government.
Accepting Hashem's sovereignty is the inner Exodus, which lifts off the yoke of foreign rule.
And "from the house of bondage" corresponds to the removal of the yoke of worldly affairs (derech eretz), as explained above — that the entire conduct of nature is called "the house of bondage."
Being freed "from the house of bondage" means being lifted above enslavement to the natural, material order of olam hazeh.
Now, at the time of yetzias Mitzrayim and the receiving of the Torah, the redemption occurred in a general, collective sense.
The original Exodus and Matan Torah brought about the geulah for the entire nation as a whole.
And therefore all the wisdoms were nullified before the wisdom of the Torah.
At that moment of redemption, every worldly wisdom was subordinated and rendered batel (nullified) before the supreme wisdom of the Torah.
And therefore "Yisro heard" — and was subdued.
Yisro, who embodied the world's wisdom, was humbled and nullified before the Torah, illustrating this universal subduing of worldly wisdom.
And in particular, this redemption exists within every individual soul of Yisrael.
Beyond the national redemption, each individual neshamah of a Jew can experience this same liberation.
For through the power of the Torah, every Jew can merit freedom.
The Torah gives each person the ability to attain personal spiritual freedom.
So that the daas (mind/intellect) rules over nature and physicality.
True freedom means that one's spiritual intellect governs the body and material drives, rather than being ruled by them.
For this is the essence of the redemption — that the body should not rule over the mind.
The core of geulah is reversing the enslavement in which the physical body dominates the soul.
As it is written: "Shall the axe boast over the one who hews with it?" (Yeshayahu 10:15).
The body is merely a tool of the soul, like an axe in the hand of a craftsman; it is absurd for the instrument to lord over its wielder.
For the neshamah (soul) is a portion of the Divine from above.
The soul is literally a piece of Godliness, infinitely higher than the body it inhabits.
And it gives life to and sustains all the actions of the body.
Every act of the body depends entirely on the neshamah for its vitality and existence.
And all of the body's deeds are only preparations serving the nefesh and the neshamah.
Physical actions have no end in themselves; they exist solely to serve and elevate the soul.
So how could the body rule over the soul?
Given that the body exists only to serve the soul, it is utterly improper for it to dominate the neshamah.
This is nothing other than galus (exile) — that the life-force is concealed within matter and physical deeds.
The very state in which the body seems to dominate the soul is itself the definition of exile: the divine vitality hidden inside corporeality.
And through the Torah one merits freedom from "the house of bondage," as has been explained.
Engaging in Torah lifts the concealment of galus and restores the soul's rule over the body — the true freedom from servitude.
Summary: When Yisro heard of Matan Torah he was subdued, because all the wisdoms of the world are only sparks and preparations for the one true wisdom of the Torah — "the fear of Hashem, that is wisdom." The Torah is pure intellect separated from matter, the very essence of Divine unity, which Bnei Yisrael could receive only after the Exodus made them free men. "Charus al haluchos" teaches that the Torah's letters are cheirus — freedom — because their hidden life-force is Hashem's own living word. Accepting the yoke of Torah removes the yoke of worldly bondage, freeing the neshamah, a portion of the Divine, to rule over the body; the reverse, where the body dominates the soul, is the very definition of galus, from which Torah redeems us.
