A further explanation of Shabbos HaGadol (the Great Shabbos).

The Sefas Emes offers another insight into why the Shabbos before Pesach is called "the Great Shabbos."

For Shabbos is called "sahaduso" (a testimony), and it is testimony to the creation of heaven and earth.

Shabbos bears witness that Hashem created the world, since resting on the seventh day testifies that there was a Creator who made everything in six days.

As it is written: "For in six days [Hashem] made [the heavens and the earth]..."

The pasuk grounds Shabbos in the act of Creation — it is a weekly testimony to Hashem as Borei (Creator).

But to Bnei Yisrael a greater testimony than this was given — to testify to the miracles and wonders, which are a path above nature.

Beyond testifying to Creation, Yisrael carry a higher testimony: bearing witness to Hashem's open miracles, which reveal that He stands above and beyond the natural order He made.

And Shabbos [carries this too].

This higher, supernatural testimony is also bound up in Shabbos itself.

And this testimony was completed at Yetzias Mitzrayim, as it is written: "For you were a slave [in Egypt]... therefore [Hashem] commanded you... to keep... the day of Shabbos."

In Devarim, the reason given for Shabbos is the Exodus, not Creation. So Shabbos testifies not only to the creation of the world but to the miracles of leaving Mitzrayim — and this dimension was completed at the redemption.

"Shabbos Bereishis" (the Shabbos of Creation) is the testimony from creation, that He created everything for His honor, to testify to the Creator.

The basic level of Shabbos bears witness to Creation — that all of existence was brought into being for the kavod of Hashem and points back to Him.

But Bnei Yisrael are witnesses on a level above the testimony of nature, for they precede creation, and the world was created for the sake of Yisrael.

Yisrael's testimony is higher than nature itself, because in Hashem's plan Yisrael came before the world — "Bereishis, for the sake of Yisrael who are called reishis." The world exists for them.

If so, the testimony of Bnei Yisrael is above the world.

Since Yisrael are the purpose and root of creation, their testimony transcends the created, natural order — it points to what is above nature.

And this was completed at Yetzias Mitzrayim, and this is Shabbos HaGadol.

The Shabbos before Pesach is "the Great Shabbos" because it heralds the Exodus — when Yisrael's higher, supernatural testimony was fully revealed, lifting Shabbos from a witness of nature to a witness of what stands above nature.

Summary: Shabbos is a testimony — on its basic level, witnessing that Hashem created heaven and earth. But Bnei Yisrael carry a greater testimony, to the miracles that transcend nature, since Yisrael themselves precede creation and the world was made for their sake. This higher testimony was completed at Yetzias Mitzrayim, and that is why the Shabbos before Pesach is called Shabbos HaGadol — the Great Shabbos that bears witness to what is above nature.
