Shabbos as threefold testimony to Hashem
Shabbos · testimony · Yetzias Mitzrayim · nature · World to Come
Shabbos is called "a testimony."
Shabbos bears witness to a fundamental truth about Hashem and the world.
For the Holy One, blessed is He, created the world to be governed by nature, and therefore there are those who deny the Creator of the world.
Because the world runs by consistent natural laws, the Creator is concealed, and some come to deny Him altogether.
And Shabbos is testimony to the Creator, since the seventh day came and He rested — for the world was continually expanding until He said, "Enough."
Creation was unfolding and expanding through the six days; on the seventh, Hashem called a halt and "rested," and this cessation testifies to His authorship.
If so, this is testimony that He is the Creator who impresses nature into being.
The fact that the world's expansion had a deliberate stopping point shows that nature itself is the work of an intentional Creator.
But at Yetzias Mitzrayim, when a change was made in nature —
The Exodus involved open miracles that overturned the natural order.
— this is greater testimony than all the Shabbosos that were before Yetzias Mitzrayim, for the Shabbos of Creation is "fixed and established," since that is how creation was made — to have six workdays and to rest on Shabbos.
The original Shabbos testifies only that the natural order was created with a built-in seventh-day rest. But changing nature, as at the Exodus, is even stronger testimony, since it shows Hashem stands above the very order He set.
And when the order was changed and nature was nullified for a time, since it was His will that it change —
At the Exodus the fixed natural order was temporarily suspended in accordance with Hashem's will.
— if so, this is the greatest testimony.
The ability to override nature is the most powerful evidence that Hashem is its Master.
And therefore Pesach too is called "Shabbos."
Because Pesach commemorates this higher testimony, it shares the name "Shabbos."
And in truth there are three aspects of Shabbos: the Shabbos of Creation, the Shabbos that is a remembrance of Yetzias Mitzrayim, and the Shabbos of the future — "the day that is wholly Shabbos."
Shabbos has three dimensions: the Shabbos of Creation, the Shabbos that recalls the Exodus, and the ultimate Shabbos of the World to Come.
And each is greater than its fellow: the Shabbos of Creation is testimony that He rested on the seventh.
The first level testifies that Hashem authored nature and rested when it was complete.
And at Yetzias Mitzrayim, greater testimony — that nature was changed in the very weekdays themselves, according to His will.
The second level testifies even more: that Hashem can override nature within the ordinary course of time, at will.
And in the future, "the day that is wholly Shabbos," it will become clear that nature itself is entirely nothing but the vitality of the Creator, as it says, "and Hashem alone shall be exalted" (Yeshayahu 2:11).
The third and highest level reveals that nature is not merely created and over-ridable — it is, in its very essence, only the living force of Hashem Himself.
And this Shabbos, a foretaste of the World to Come, was given to Yisrael, as it says, "between Me and the Bnei Yisrael it is a sign forever (l'olam)" — meaning without time, limit, or the constriction of nature.
Shabbos, given to Bnei Yisrael, is a taste of the World to Come — a realm beyond time and the limitations of the natural order.
And the reason is, "for six days He made…" — that all of nature and time are within the six days.
The entire framework of nature and time belongs to the six weekdays.
But Shabbos is above time, and it is a foretaste of the World to Come. And to this Shabbos Bnei Yisrael merited at Yetzias Mitzrayim, as it says, "and you shall remember that you were a slave…" (Devarim 5:15).
Shabbos transcends time itself; Bnei Yisrael attained this dimension of Shabbos through the Exodus, which is why the Shabbos commandment recalls their liberation from slavery.
And they became free people, to go out from the bondage of matter and nature; therefore "He commanded you… to observe… the Shabbos."
The Exodus freed Bnei Yisrael not only from Egypt but from enslavement to physicality and the natural order — hence the connection between freedom and keeping Shabbos.
And this is the meaning of "between Me… it is a sign forever" — that this is the "great Shabbos" that is unique to Bnei Yisrael, above the aspect of the Shabbos of Creation that existed before Yetzias Mitzrayim.
The "great Shabbos" belongs uniquely to Bnei Yisrael and stands above the universal Shabbos of Creation, because it carries the higher testimony attained through the Exodus — freedom from nature itself.
Summary: Shabbos is a "testimony" to Hashem, but on three ascending levels. The Shabbos of Creation testifies that He authored nature and called a halt to its expansion. The Shabbos linked to Yetzias Mitzrayim testifies even more, that Hashem can override nature at will. The future "day that is wholly Shabbos" will reveal that nature is nothing but His living force. This higher Shabbos, a foretaste of the World to Come and a realm above time, was given uniquely to Bnei Yisrael, who at the Exodus became free of the bondage of matter and nature.
