Three Shabbosos and naaseh before nishma
Shabbos · Yetzias Mitzrayim · Shalosh Seudos · Naaseh Venishma · Geulah
Behold, there are three [aspects of] Shabbos.
The Sefas Emes introduces three dimensions contained within Shabbos.
The Shabbos of Maaseh Bereishis (Creation), the Shabbos of Yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus), and the Shabbos of Kabbalas HaTorah (the Receiving of the Torah).
The three correspond to creation, the redemption from Mitzrayim, and the giving of the Torah.
And these are the three meals (shalosh seudos) of Shabbos.
The three Shabbos meals each embody one of these three aspects.
As it is brought in the Zohar HaKadosh, that they are three aspects within the verse: "Then you shall delight [in Hashem]" (Yeshayahu 58:14) — the meal of the Atika (the Ancient One).
The Zohar maps the three phrases of the verse "Then you shall delight" onto the three meals; the highest, the meal of "Atika," corresponds to the deepest level.
"And I will set you astride [the heights of the earth]..." (Yeshayahu 58:14).
The next phrase of the verse corresponds to the second meal and its aspect.
"And [I will feed you with] the heritage of Yaakov" — this is the Torah.
The phrase "heritage of Yaakov" represents the Torah, aligned with the Shabbos of Kabbalas HaTorah.
And the Shabbos of Atika is the aspect of Yetzias Mitzrayim, the "world of freedom" (alma decheirus), and it is the greatest Shabbos of all three.
The highest level, "Atika," corresponds to the Exodus — the realm of freedom — and is the loftiest of the three Shabbos dimensions.
And the proper order should have been that the Shabbos of Yetzias Mitzrayim come last, since it is the greatest of them all.
By rights, the loftiest aspect — the Exodus — should have come at the end, as the climax.
However, Bnei Yisrael did not have the power to receive the Torah until the miracle of Yetzias Mitzrayim and Krias Yam Suf (the splitting of the sea) was done for them.
In practice, the Exodus had to come first, because only after that redemption were Bnei Yisrael capable of receiving the Torah.
And in truth this itself is the matter of what is said, "for in haste (bechipazon) you went out" (Devarim 16:3) — it was a miracle not in gradual order (lo b'hadragah) and not in the proper sequence.
The "haste" of the Exodus expresses that it came as a sudden miracle, out of the natural, gradual order of progression.
Until the future, when everything will be in order, as it is written, "for not in haste shall you go out" (Yeshayahu 52:12).
The final redemption will unfold in its proper, measured order — "not in haste" — unlike the rushed Exodus from Mitzrayim.
Therefore we always arrange the order with the meal of Atika before the meal of Ze'ir Anpin (Z"A), because such was the order of the three Shabbasos.
The Shabbos meals reflect this same sequence — the higher "Atika" level (the Exodus) coming before the level of Torah — mirroring how the Exodus preceded Matan Torah.
And in truth the meal of Atika is the essence; this Shabbos hints at the Shabbos of the future, "the day that is entirely Shabbos" — except that something of this nature was made at Yetzias Mitzrayim through a miracle, for the need of the hour, as a foretaste of the future.
The Exodus gave a temporary, miraculous taste of the ultimate redemption — the eternal "day that is entirely Shabbos" — granted ahead of time out of necessity.
And behold, on this Shabbos [HaGadol] was the acceptance of the mitzvos — the first mitzvah that Bnei Yisrael were commanded.
On Shabbos HaGadol in Mitzrayim, Bnei Yisrael took the korban Pesach lamb — their first commandment, an acceptance of the mitzvos.
And in truth the mitzvos are drawn from the Torah.
Normally the mitzvos flow out of the Torah, which would seem to require the Torah to come first.
But Bnei Yisrael placed "naaseh" (we will do) before "nishma" (we will hear/understand), as I have explained elsewhere, that this is the essential point of the praise of Yisrael.
The greatness of Bnei Yisrael was committing to action before understanding — putting "we will do" ahead of "we will hear."
Not merely the verbal statement that they placed first, but that they actually fulfilled, in deed, the acceptance of the mitzvos before the Torah.
"Naaseh before nishma" was not only spoken at Sinai but lived out: in Mitzrayim they accepted the mitzvos in practice before receiving the Torah.
And in the measure that a person measures, so it is measured out to him (Sotah 8b).
Measure for measure: because they put deed before understanding, Heaven responded in kind.
Therefore the Shabbos of Yetzias Mitzrayim was made for them before the Shabbos of Matan Torah, not in gradual order, as stated.
Because they embraced action first, Hashem reciprocated by granting them the loftier "Exodus" Shabbos before the Torah Shabbos — out of order, measure for measure.
Summary: Shabbos contains three aspects — Creation, the Exodus, and the giving of the Torah — reflected in the three Shabbos meals. The loftiest, the "meal of Atika," corresponds to the Exodus, the realm of freedom and a foretaste of the future "day that is entirely Shabbos." Though by rights this highest level should come last, it came first because Bnei Yisrael could not receive the Torah until redeemed — and measure for measure, because they placed "naaseh" before "nishma," accepting the mitzvos in deed before the Torah, Hashem granted them the higher Exodus-Shabbos ahead of the Shabbos of Matan Torah.
