Galus and geulah follow Hashem's order
Pesach Seder · galus · hashgachah · Maharal · praise Hashem
And I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, regarding why the night of Pesach is called "Seder," and similarly that we say "the order (sidur) of Pesach is concluded."
The Sefas Emes brings a teaching from his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim) explaining why the Pesach night is named "Seder" — "order" — and why the Haggadah ends with "chasal sidur Pesach."
To hint at what the Maharal, of blessed memory, wrote: just as there is an order to nature, so too there is a special order to miracles and wonders, as mentioned above.
The Maharal teaches that nissim are not random breaches of nature; just as nature runs by a fixed order, the miracles of the geulah follow their own distinct, deliberate order set by Hashem.
And it seems to me a further explanation of "Seder": to hint that even all the unfolding of the galus was a special order — that we should not say that some chance cause brought it about that Pharaoh ruled over Bnei Yisrael, but rather everything was by deliberate intent, as Hashem told Avraham at the Bris Bein HaBesarim (the Covenant Between the Parts).
The Sefas Emes adds his own reading: "Seder" teaches that even the entire course of galus was an ordered, intended plan. The Egyptian bondage was no accident of history; it was foretold to Avraham and woven into Hashem's deliberate design.
And even all the details of the afflictions and the harshness of the labor were all part of a special order.
Not only the broad fact of galus, but every particular of the suffering and back-breaking work, was part of this purposeful Divine order.
And indeed all the narratives of the Haggadah are about the course of their affliction and their crying out.
The Haggadah itself dwells largely on the suffering and the cries of Bnei Yisrael — proof that even the affliction is part of the story worth recounting.
And this is included in the telling of Yetzias Mitzrayim — that everything was through the hashgachah (providence) of Hashem, for the good of Bnei Yisrael.
Recounting the suffering belongs to the mitzvah of sippur Yetzias Mitzrayim precisely because it shows that even the hardship was guided by Hashem's providence and was ultimately for the benefit of Klal Yisrael.
Therefore the mitzvah is upon matzah and maror (bitter herbs) — for one must give praise over the galus just as over the geulah.
We eat both matzah (of redemption) and maror (of bondage) and praise Hashem over both, because the galus too was part of His good plan and deserves thanks no less than the geulah.
However, there are generations.
The Sefas Emes now qualifies: different generations have different roles within this Divine order.
For whom the fitting order is galus.
For some generations, the proper path appointed to them is to live within galus and serve Hashem through it.
And there are those who are designated for freedom and redemption, according to the knowledge of the One who knows all hidden things.
Other generations are destined for cheirus and geulah — and only Hashem, who knows all concealed matters, decides which path suits each generation.
And concerning this Chazal said: "with every measure that He metes out to you, give thanks to Him exceedingly" — as it is written, "with all your might (me'odecha)" — for Hashem knows how to arrange for each generation the order that is best for it of all possible orders.
Chazal teach that we must thank Hashem for whatever measure He gives, good or hard, "with all your might." This is because Hashem alone knows how to set for every generation the precise order — whether galus or geulah — that is most beneficial for it.
And it is all with chesed, as it is written: "He who guides every generation with His kindness."
Whichever order Hashem appoints, it flows entirely from His chesed — every generation is led by His kindness, even when the path is galus.
And I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, regarding what is said in the Haggadah: "and they did evil to us" — as it is stated.
The Sefas Emes brings a second teaching from his grandfather on the Haggadah's pattern of citing a pasuk for each phrase of the affliction.
"And we cried out" — as it is stated, and so on.
For each stage — the evil done to us, our crying out — the Haggadah anchors it to a verse of the Torah.
To say that out of all of this a portion in the Torah was made.
The point of citing a pasuk for every detail is that the entire experience of suffering and crying out was itself written into the Torah as a parshah.
And that all the affliction and the crying out were entirely according to the way of the Torah — and these are beautiful words of Torah.
Since each phase has its verse, it shows that even the affliction and the cries unfolded along the path charted by the Torah itself; the Sefas Emes praises this as a beautiful insight.
And these are the very same matters that I wrote — that everything was in the special order, and everything is included in arranging the praise of the Omnipresent, blessed be He.
The grandfather's teaching confirms the Sefas Emes's own theme: every detail of galus followed Hashem's special order, and the whole telling of it is part of the "sidur" — the arranging and ordering — of praise to Hashem.
Summary: The night of Pesach is called "Seder" because not only the miracles of the geulah but the entire course of the galus — every detail of the affliction — unfolded by Hashem's deliberate order and providence, all in chesed. Therefore we praise Hashem over the galus (maror) as over the geulah (matzah), and the whole Haggadah, by anchoring each affliction to a pasuk, shows that the suffering itself was woven into the Torah as part of the ordered praise of Hashem.
