Shabbos as the root above all festivals

Shabbat HaGadol · תרמ"ד (1883) · Essay 1

Shabbos · festivals · bittul · kedushah · knowing Hashem

Shabbos HaGadol, which precedes Pesach. It may be explained based on what is said, "first of the holy convocations," for in the parsha of the festivals the verse placed Shabbos before the Yamim Tovim, as it appears that all of them are drawn from the power of Shabbos, which is above them all.

The Torah lists Shabbos at the head of the festivals to show that Shabbos is the source from which all the Yamim Tovim draw their kedushah, standing above them all.

And Nisan is the Rosh Hashanah for the festivals; therefore this is the order: Shabbos, and afterward Pesach, Shavuos, Sukkos.

Since the festival year begins in Nisan with Pesach, the proper sequence opens with Shabbos and then proceeds through the three regalim in their order.

For the festivals too are called "Shabbosos," but Shabbos Bereishis (the weekly Shabbos of Creation) rises above them all, for the festivals are called "holy convocations" (mikra'ei kodesh), whereas Shabbos itself is holy ("kodesh hu").

Although Yamim Tovim share the name "Shabbos," the weekly Shabbos is greater: the festivals are merely "called" to holiness, while Shabbos is intrinsically holy in its very essence.

And in each of the festivals Bnei Yisrael have a particular dimension: the time of our freedom, the giving of our Torah, our rejoicing.

Each Yom Tov carries a specific gift connected to Bnei Yisrael's own experience — cheirus on Pesach, Torah on Shavuos, simchah on Sukkos.

But Shabbos Kodesh is bittul (self-nullification) to Hashem alone.

Shabbos is distinct: it is not about a particular national gift but about pure bittul, surrendering oneself entirely to Hashem.

And it is the main thing, as it is written, "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom" (Yirmiyahu 9:22), etc. — this corresponds to the giving of our Torah.

The Sefas Emes maps the verse's three boasts onto the festivals. "Wisdom" corresponds to Shavuos, Mattan Torah.

"Nor the strong man of his strength" — this is the time of our freedom, for Hashem took us out with a mighty hand, and also that they went out from under the hand of the yetzer hara, as it says, "Who is mighty? He who conquers his yetzer."

"Strength" corresponds to Pesach: Hashem freed us with a mighty hand, and true gevurah is mastery over the yetzer hara that the redemption made possible.

"Nor the rich man of his riches" — this is the time of our rejoicing, as it says, "Who is rich? He who rejoices in his portion."

"Riches" corresponds to Sukkos, our season of joy, for true wealth is the simchah of being content with one's portion.

"But only in this" — this is Shabbos: "understanding and knowing Me," as it says, "to know that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."

The verse's climax — boasting only in knowing Hashem — corresponds to Shabbos, which is itself the sign of "knowing that I am Hashem who sanctifies you."

And Shabbos must be the main thing and precede all the festivals, as above.

Therefore Shabbos must be regarded as primary, the root that comes before and sustains all the Yamim Tovim.

And so Chazal said: one who observes the festivals, it is reckoned for him as though he observed the Shabbosos — for Shabbos is holy, above the festivals.

Keeping the festivals is credited as keeping Shabbos, because every Yom Tov draws from and points back to Shabbos, the supreme holiness above them all.

Summary: Shabbos HaGadol before Pesach reflects how the Torah places Shabbos at the head of all the festivals: the Yamim Tovim are "called" holy (mikra'ei kodesh) and each gives Bnei Yisrael a particular gift — cheirus, Torah, simchah — while Shabbos is intrinsically holy, pure bittul to Hashem alone. Mapping Yirmiyahu's verse onto the festivals, all boasts (wisdom, strength, riches) yield to the one true boast of knowing Hashem, which is Shabbos. Thus Shabbos stands above and sustains all the festivals, and keeping the Yamim Tovim is credited as keeping the Shabbosos themselves.
