עבדים היינו כו'.
“We were slaves, etc.”
The Sefat Emet opens with the familiar line from the Haggadah, framing redemption as emerging from a state of slavery.
ואילו לא הוציא הקב"ה את אבותינו כו'.
“And had the Holy One not taken our ancestors out, etc.”
He emphasizes that the Exodus is an enduring act, not merely a one‑time historical intervention.
דכ' לעושה נפלאות גדולות לבדו כי לעולם חסדו.
As it is written: “To Him who performs great wonders alone, for His kindness is eternal.”
This verse teaches that certain wonders are uniquely performed by God Himself.
פי' אלה הנפלאות שהקב"ה עושה לבדו.
These wonders are those which the Holy One performs alone.
The Sefat Emet highlights that some divine actions bypass all intermediaries.
כמ"ש אני ולא מלאך.
As it is said: “I, and not an angel.”
This means the Exodus was carried out directly by God, not via a messenger.
הם לדורות ולעולם.
They endure for all generations and forever.
Such direct acts transcend time and are eternally present.
כי הנעשה ע"י שליח הוא בזמן ומדה וקצבה.
For what is done through a messenger is bound by time, measure, and limitation.
Intermediated actions operate within natural constraints.
אבל מעשה הבורא ית"ש הם למעלה מהזמן והטבע.
But the deeds of the Creator are beyond time and nature.
Divine acts without intermediaries are unlimited.
ז"ש אנכי ה' אלקיך אשר הוצאתיך.
Thus it says: “I am the Lord your God who brought you out.”
The “I” signifies direct divine involvement.
כמו שהוא ית"ש חי וקיים לעולם כן יצ"מ לעולם הוא.
Just as He lives and endures forever, so too the Exodus endures forever.
The Exodus is an ongoing spiritual reality.
וכמ"ש ויוציאך בפניו בכחו הגדול.
As it is written: “He brought you out by His presence and His great power.”
This underscores the immediacy of God’s action.
ובאמת בנ"י מצד הטבע אין להם המלכות והם משועבדים כמ"ש עבדים היינו.
In truth, by nature the Children of Israel have no kingship and are subject to servitude, as it says ‘We were slaves.’
According to natural order, Israel is not a ruling nation.
אבל מצד הנהגה עליונה וביטול הטבע נעשין בני חורין וניתן להם המלכות.
But through a higher divine governance that overrides nature, they become free and kingship is given to them.
Freedom and sovereignty emerge only through transcendent divine intervention.
ולכן ניסן ר"ה למלכי ישראל כמ"ש בגמ' מקיש מלכות שלמה ליצ"מ.
Therefore Nisan is the new year for the kings of Israel, as the Talmud links Solomon’s kingship to the Exodus.
Kingly renewal is tied to the moment of divine liberation.
וזה עיקר הפי' לא ע"י מלאך.
And this is the main explanation of “not by an angel.”
The Exodus bypassed the pathways of nature symbolized by angels.
שהגאולה לא הי' עפ"י דרך הטבע שהוא בחי' מלאך ושרף בזמן וקצבה רק במדריגה עליונה.
For the redemption was not according to the natural order, which corresponds to angels and seraphim bound by time and measure, but from a higher level.
Redemption derives from a plane entirely above natural limitation.
ולכן לק"מ מה דכתיב וישלח מלאך ויוציאנו.
Thus there is no contradiction with the verse “He sent an angel and brought us out.”
The seeming involvement of an angel does not diminish God’s direct role.
כי בוודאי הקב"ה עושה רצונו ע"י מלאך.
For surely God carries out His will through an angel.
Angels may serve as instruments of execution.
אבל הכוונה שלא נעשה ע"י מלאך מיוחד לדבר זה כמו כל הנהגת הטבע.
But the meaning is that it was not done by an angel designated for this task, as is the way of natural governance.
No specialized intermediary carried out the Exodus; it was direct divine action.
אח"כ מצאתי כדברים האלה גם באבן יחייא בשיר השירים.
Later I found similar words in Even Yechiyah on Song of Songs.
The Sefat Emet notes precedent for this interpretation.
והדברים נכונים למבין.
And the matter is correct for one who understands.
He concludes that this teaching aligns with deeper Torah understanding.
