Faith Through Hidden Miracles

“In the Midrash: ‘And they believed in God,’ even though they had already believed, as it is written, ‘And the people believed’; they reverted and did not believe, etc.”
The Midrash notes the paradox: Israel had previously believed, yet later fell from that belief, prompting an explanation of fluctuating faith.
“For the Ramban wrote that the miracles which the Holy One occasionally performs are testimony that the existence of the world is from God.”
Miracles reveal the divine source of creation itself, serving as signs that the world is sustained by God.
“For the world was created to operate through nature, yet at times nature is overridden by a miracle in order to teach about the entirety of existence.”
Nature is the normative order, and miracles interrupt it only to disclose its ultimate divine foundation.
“And indeed, not everyone merits a miracle unless they are fit to learn faith from the miracle.”
The transformative spiritual effect of a miracle depends on the person’s readiness to internalize faith.
“Thus it says that in Egypt they reverted and did not believe, as it is written, ‘They did not understand Your wonders,’ meaning they were not moved by the miracle so that the faith would remain after the miracle ceased.”
The miracles in Egypt did not produce lasting inner transformation; once the wonders ended, their faith dissipated.
“But at the splitting of the sea, through the destruction of the wicked, Israel was perfected and attained the level called ‘believers, children of believers.’”
The Red Sea experience refined Israel spiritually, granting them enduring and inherited faith.
“And they became witnesses to testify that all natural order is a hidden miracle from Him.”
Israel reached the insight that nature itself is continuous divine action, only concealed.
“And according to the testimony that Israel bears about Him, so is His inner governance revealed, as explained elsewhere regarding ‘Holy, Who dwells amid the praises of Israel.’”
Human recognition of God amplifies the manifestation of divine presence in the world.
“Thus it is said: ‘When Israel went forth from Egypt… the sea saw and fled… before the Master… the God of Jacob.’”
The miracle at the sea occurred because Israel’s faith revealed God’s presence so fully that nature itself responded.
“Meaning: through Israel, God’s divinity was revealed in the world, and therefore nature changed and the sea fled.”
Israel’s spiritual state activated a revelation that transformed the natural order.
“And this is the intent of the Mekhilta’s parable: one who has two courtyards, one inside the other…”
The parable illustrates the layered structure of nature and its inner divine core.
“And this is as stated: that the inner governance from Him is at the very core of nature.”
Nature contains an inner divine dimension that is usually hidden.
“Only that nature conceals it.”
The appearance of autonomous natural law hides God’s direct involvement.
“And when Israel merited that God’s divinity be revealed in the world, the sea saw and fled.”
Revelation of the divine inner layer caused nature to yield.
“And all the power of Israel lies in their ability to reveal God’s divinity in the world, as the Sages said on the verse: ‘You are My witnesses, and I am God.’”
Israel’s testimony enables divine revelation to flourish within creation.
Summary: The Sefat Emet teaches that miracles reveal the divine source of nature, but only those spiritually prepared internalize this revelation. At the Red Sea, Israel attained lasting faith and became witnesses to God, enabling divine governance to manifest within the natural world itself.
