בפסוק ויצעקו בנ"י אל ה' אמרו חז"ל תפסו אומנות אבותם.
“In the verse ‘And the Children of Israel cried out to God,’ the Sages said: They grasped the craft of their ancestors.”
The Sefat Emet explains that Israel’s cry in Egypt was an inherited spiritual reflex, following the path established by the patriarchs.
דאיתא שחורה אני במעשי ונאוה במעשה אבותי.
“It is taught: ‘I am black through my own deeds, yet beautiful through the deeds of my ancestors.’”
This expresses the tension between personal shortcomings and the enduring merit of the forefathers.
פי' הנטיעה שנטעו האבות בכלל ישראל מתקיים בהם לעולם.
“The planting that the ancestors planted within Israel remains in them forever.”
The spiritual foundation established by the forefathers is eternal and continues to live within every Jew.
והגם כי ע"י החטא מסתתר גם זו הנקודה.
“And although through sin this point becomes concealed…”
Sin obscures, but never erases, the inherited spiritual root.
אך בבוא קצת גאולה מתגלית זאת הנקודה.
“Yet when a bit of redemption arrives, this point is revealed.”
Moments of divine redemption uncover the latent ancestral holiness.
ולכן אחר יצ"מ הגם כי לא הי' עדיין גאולה שלימה.
“Therefore, after the Exodus, although it was not yet complete redemption…”
The first stage of redemption already activated ancestral merits, even before liberation was complete.
מ"מ נתגלה נטיעה זו.
“Nevertheless, this planting was revealed.”
The inner legacy of the forefathers came to the surface.
ולכן נתאחזו במעשה אבותיהם.
“Therefore they were able to grasp the deeds of their ancestors.”
Israel reconnected with the spiritual practices and faith modeled by the patriarchs.
וזה ראשית הגאולה להיות נמשכין אחר מעשה אבות.
“And this is the beginning of redemption: to be drawn after the deeds of the ancestors.”
Redemption begins when the people reconnect to their deepest ancestral identity.
וכן בגאולה העתידה כ' והשיב לב אבות על בנים כו' כמ"ש במ"א מזה.
“And so in the future redemption: ‘He will return the heart of the fathers to the children,’ as explained elsewhere.”
The final redemption also centers on restoring the ancestral spiritual bond.
ולכן תפסו אומנות אבותם.
“Therefore they grasped the craft of their ancestors.”
Their return to prayer and faith was a reawakening of inherited spiritual strength.
הגם כי עדיין חטאו באומרם המבלי כו'.
“Even though they still sinned by saying, ‘Is it because…?’”
Their doubts did not negate the renewed revelation of ancestral merit.
אבל נקודת מעשה אבות נגלה בהם.
“But the point of the deeds of the ancestors was revealed within them.”
The essential spark of the patriarchs’ faith shone through despite imperfections.
ואח"כ נגמר הגאולה בקי"ס עד שאמרו זה אלי כו' מצד עצמותם לבד אלקי אבי כנ"ל.
“And afterwards the redemption was completed at the splitting of the sea, until they said, ‘This is my God,’ from their very essence, and ‘the God of my father,’ as above.”
Their spiritual perception matured: they recognized God both personally (“my God”) and through ancestral tradition (“God of my father”).
שהם ב' בחי' אלקינו ואלקי אבותינו כמ"ש בכתר ש"ט:
“For these are two levels: ‘our God’ and ‘the God of our ancestors,’ as written in Keter Shem Tov.”
The Sefat Emet concludes by distinguishing between personal divine connection and inherited spiritual identity.
