Servitude and Sonship in Pesach

Pesach · תרנ"ח (1897) · Essay 6

Pesach · Spiritual Growth · Yaakov and Yisrael · Holiness

“In the Exodus from Egypt, the Children of Israel became servants of God, as it is said: ‘And I shall bring out My armies.’”

The Sefat Emet teaches that the first stage of redemption is becoming servants of God—disciplined, committed, ready to follow the divine command as a spiritual army.

“And at the splitting of the sea they were elevated to the level of children, as it is said: ‘He who caused His children to pass between the halves of the Sea of Reeds.’”

Keriat Yam Suf represents a higher intimacy: not merely servants obeying God, but children carried and protected by Him.

For it is written: “Six days you shall eat matzot, and on the seventh day there shall be an assembly for the Lord your God.”

The verse distinguishes the days of labor-like discipline from the culminating day of gathering and closeness.

The Zohar teaches that ‘matzah’ is from the root of ‘strife and contention,’ to battle the Other Side; this is the level of servants of God who wage His battles.

Matzah symbolizes spiritual struggle—the disciplined stance of a servant fighting to uphold holiness against inner and outer impurity.

But ‘mitzvah,’ with the added letter vav, signifies connection and togetherness.

The vav turns command into communion, indicating that beyond struggle lies union with God.

And this is “an assembly for the Lord your God”—a gathering and union.

The seventh day of Pesach expresses this culmination: not battle, but bonding.

And so it is always: the weekdays and Shabbat.

Weekdays resemble the servant‑mode of effort; Shabbat reveals the child‑mode of closeness.

The seven days of Pesach prepare all the days—both weekdays and Shabbat.

Peshach sets the pattern for the entire year’s rhythm of struggle and connection.

And these two are the levels of Jacob and Israel.

Jacob represents struggle; Israel represents perfected harmony.

For Jacob is so named for struggle, moving with subtlety and effort.

‘Yaakov’ alludes to wrestling with obstacles, the servant‑mode of spiritual labor.

And Israel—when they arrive at the straight path, then Israel sings the song of God.

‘Yisrael’ embodies the clarity and joy that follow struggle, culminating in song.

Summary: Pesach holds two stages—service and struggle like Jacob, and closeness and song like Israel. The week of Pesach trains the soul for the yearly cycle of weekdays and Shabbat, moving from battle to connection.
