Avodah rooted in the Exodus, not creation
HaChodesh · Nissan · yetzias Mitzrayim · above nature · avodah for Hashem's sake
"This month shall be for you the head of the months; it is the first [of the months of the year for you]" (Shemos 12:2).
The Sefas Emes opens with the first mitzvah given to Bnei Yisrael — the sanctification of the new month — and the Torah's emphasis that this month is "for you" the first. He will explain why the month of the Exodus marks a new beginning specifically for Bnei Yisrael.
That yetzias Mitzrayim (the Exodus) is the "head" and the renewal for Bnei Yisrael.
The Exodus is the true starting-point and renewal of the Jewish people. Their reckoning of time begins here, because their essential identity as servants of Hashem begins here.
As it is written: "I am Hashem your God, who took you out of the land of Egypt" (Shemos 20:2).
Tellingly, the foundational statement of Hashem's relationship with Bnei Yisrael identifies Him not as the Creator of the world but as the One who took them out of Egypt — pointing to the Exodus as the basis of their service.
For all the world serves the Creator on account of the creation — that He created everything and reigns over them.
The nations of the world serve Hashem (insofar as they do) because He is their Creator and King; their service is grounded in the fact of having been created and ruled.
And this is called serving "for their own sake."
Service rooted merely in createdness is ultimately self-referential: one serves because one owes one's own existence to the Creator — it is still bound up with the self.
For all their good is that they were created in the world; and therefore they must serve the One who created them.
The good they have received is the gift of existence itself, so their obligation to serve flows from gratitude for their own being — a service that still centers on what they have gained.
But for Bnei Yisrael, it is not fitting to attribute their service to [the fact of] creation.
The avodah of Bnei Yisrael cannot be explained merely by their having been created, for, as the Sefas Emes will now show, their relationship to creation runs in the opposite direction.
For everything was created for the sake of Yisrael, as it is taught that He took counsel, as it were, with the souls of Yisrael, and for their sake the world was created.
The souls of Bnei Yisrael are not a product of creation but its purpose — the whole world was brought into being for their sake. Hence their service cannot be derived from creation; they precede it in Hashem's intent.
And indeed they give over their very souls for the sake of the Creator.
Bnei Yisrael serve Hashem to the point of mesiras nefesh — sacrificing their very lives for Him. Such selfless devotion is plainly not a service rooted in self-interest or in mere gratitude for existence.
If so, their service is not on account of the creation.
The Sefas Emes concludes the point: since Bnei Yisrael serve with total self-sacrifice and since the world exists for them rather than they for it, their avodah must rest on a different foundation than the nations' service.
On the contrary, even their creation — that they were created and sent into this world — is itself in order to do the will of the Creator.
For Bnei Yisrael, the very purpose of having been created and dispatched into this world is to carry out Hashem's ratzon. Their existence is a means to serve, not the reason they serve.
Rather, He made their service depend upon yetzias Mitzrayim, for that is the purpose of their service in the world.
This is why "I am Hashem your God" is anchored in the Exodus rather than in creation. The Exodus is the true goal of their avodah, the moment that defines why they serve.
For they went out from the imprisonment and darkness of the body and of nature, and were thereby able to do the will of their Maker.
The Exodus was not only a release from Egypt but, on a deeper level, a liberation from the "prison and darkness" of the physical body and the natural order. Freed from these constraints, Bnei Yisrael became able to do Hashem's will purely, for His sake alone.
Therefore this month is for Yisrael the head and the first of the months of the year.
Because the Exodus is the foundation and purpose of their avodah, its month — Nissan — is fittingly their "head" and "first," the beginning of their sacred reckoning of time.
For the [ordinary] months of the year are on account of the creation.
The natural cycle of months belongs to the order of creation — the realm in which the nations of the world operate and which underlies natural reckoning.
But the month of Nissan, which is the aspect of the nissim and nifla'os (the miracles and wonders), is the head of all the months.
Nissan — its very name evoking "nissim," miracles — represents the supernatural, the realm above creation and nature. Since Bnei Yisrael's identity is rooted in the miraculous Exodus rather than in the natural order, Nissan, the month of miracles, stands at the head of all their months.
Summary: The Sefas Emes explains why the first mitzvah given to Bnei Yisrael was to make the month of the Exodus their "first." The nations serve Hashem on account of creation — a service ultimately bound up with their own existence — but Bnei Yisrael's avodah cannot rest on creation, for the world was created for their sake and they serve with total self-sacrifice. Their service is rooted instead in the Exodus, which freed them from the prison and darkness of body and nature so they could do Hashem's will for His sake alone. Therefore Nissan, the month of miracles that transcends the natural order, is the head of all their months.
