The eternal hidden testimony of Shabbos

"These are the accountings of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of testimony" (Shemos 38:21).

The parsha opens by calling the Mishkan the "Mishkan of testimony," inviting an explanation of what it testifies to.

Rashi explains: "testimony" that the Holy One, blessed is He, forgave them for the incident of the Golden Calf.

According to Rashi, the Mishkan testifies that Hashem had pardoned Bnei Yisrael for the eigel.

And in the Midrash: "with 'these (eileh)' you angered Me" — referring to "these are your gods, Yisrael" — "with 'these (eileh)' I become reconciled with you," and likewise in the future, "Who are these (mi eileh) that fly like a cloud?" (Yeshayahu 60:8).

The same word "eileh" that marked the sin of the Calf ("these are your gods") becomes the word of reconciliation in the Mishkan ("these are the accountings"), and will return in the future redemption.

The matter is according to what was said above in Parshas Vayakhel on the verse "Who created these (mi vara eileh)" (Yeshayahu 40:26): that everything has a root in the supernal concealment, as the Zohar says — the Holy Name and the Torah are concealed and revealed (sasim v'galya).

Drawing on his earlier teaching, the Sefas Emes recalls that everything has a hidden upper root. Both Hashem's Name and the Torah have a concealed aspect ("Mi") and a revealed aspect ("Eileh").

"Mi (Who) created Eileh (these)."

The hidden "Mi" is the source that brings forth the revealed "Eileh" — the concealed gives rise to the revealed.

And the joining of "Mi" with "Eileh" sustains everything.

Creation endures when the concealed source (Mi) and the revealed world (Eileh) are united — together they spell "Elokim."

And these two aspects are "naaseh" and "nishma." "Naaseh" (we will do) is in the revealed; "nishma" (we will hear) is to receive the concealed root.

"Naaseh," action, corresponds to the revealed "Eileh"; "nishma," receptive listening, corresponds to the concealed "Mi" — the hidden root one must draw in.

And in the aspect of the revealed was the sin of the Calf, as it is said, "they sinned with 'naaseh.'"

The sin of the eigel was a flaw specifically in the realm of action, the revealed "naaseh."

And through the Mishkan they returned and repaired the action (asiyah).

Building the Mishkan — a great act of doing — mended the very dimension of action that the Calf had damaged.

And for this purpose Bnei Yisrael were sent: to repair the world of action (olam ha'asiyah), as it is written, "and you are My witnesses" (Yeshayahu 43:10).

Bnei Yisrael's mission is to rectify the lowest, revealed world of deed, and thereby to serve as witnesses to Hashem.

And the essence of testimony must be in the "world of falsehood" (alma d'shikra), where the truth is not recognizable except through the avodah of man.

Testimony is needed precisely in this concealing world, where truth is hidden and only human effort can reveal it.

And in truth, all that the Holy One, blessed is He, created, He created for His glory, as is brought in the Mishnah.

Everything in creation exists to give honor to Hashem.

Therefore, in the entire structure of the world, there is testimony to the Creator.

The very design of the world bears witness to its Creator.

As it is written, "and He established them forever (la'ad l'olam)" (Tehillim 148:6).

The verse hints that Hashem set creation up to be a "witness" (eid) forever.

The explanation of "la'ad": that everything is testimony to the Holy One, blessed is He.

Reading "la'ad" as "for a witness," all of creation testifies to Hashem.

And there is testimony in "olam, shanah, nefesh" (world/space, year/time, soul).

Following Sefer Yetzirah, the Sefas Emes identifies three domains of testimony: space, time, and soul.

For one who contemplates with complete understanding sees and comprehends that the creation of the world is impossible except through the One True God, as is well explained in the sefer Chovos HaLevavos in the Gate of Unity.

The dimension of "olam" (space): clear reasoning shows the world could only have been created by the one true God, as the Chovos HaLevavos demonstrates.

And this is in the aspect of the world itself: "He gave a fixed law…" (Tehillim 148:6).

The ordered, lawful structure of the physical world is the testimony of "olam."

And there is the aspect of "shanah," which is the changing of the seasons and times — this is even greater testimony that there is a Director who turns and revolves the whole world.

The dimension of "shanah" (time): the orderly turning of seasons testifies even more strongly to a Guide who governs all of creation.

And there is the aspect of "nefesh," which is the essence of the testimony, as it says that the world was created "with sefer (writing) and sippur (telling)," and so on.

The dimension of "nefesh" (soul) is the highest testimony, bound up with speech and the telling of Hashem's praise.

And this testimony was given to Bnei Yisrael.

The supreme testimony of "nefesh" was entrusted specifically to Bnei Yisrael.

And concerning this it is written, "You are My witnesses, says Hashem" — meaning in the aspect of speech: the twenty-two letters of the Torah, this "telling" was given to Bnei Yisrael.

Bnei Yisrael bear witness through speech — through the twenty-two letters of the Torah, the power to "tell" and proclaim Hashem's glory.

As it is written, "This people I formed for Myself; they shall declare My praise" (Yeshayahu 43:21).

Bnei Yisrael were created precisely to recount and declare Hashem's praise.

And Bnei Yisrael are able to clarify the glory of His kingship in the world, as it was in the building of the Mishkan and the Mikdash, through which they repaired all of creation.

Through avodah, especially the building of the Mishkan and Mikdash, Bnei Yisrael reveal Hashem's royal glory and thereby rectify the whole of creation.

And the form of all creation was hinted at in this building, to bind all of creation to its root.

The Mishkan was a microcosm — its structure mirrored all of creation, serving to reconnect the world to its Source.

And this is the entire avodah of Bnei Yisrael: to bring this form from potential into actuality.

The whole task of Bnei Yisrael is to actualize this hidden "form," revealing the Divine pattern latent within creation.

But the wicked — their whole aim is to nullify this form and the revelation of holiness, as is brought in the Midrash with the parable of one who hates the king: fearful to approach the king himself, he undermines and topples the king's statue. See there, for the Mikdash was, as it were, the "statue" of the King, as is brought in the Midrash on the verse "Go forth and gaze… upon the crown…" (Shir HaShirim 3:11).

The wicked seek to erase the revelation of holiness. Unable to attack Hashem directly, they strike at the Mikdash, which is like the King's "image" in the world — which is why its destruction was their target.

And this testimony depends on action, according to the merit of Bnei Yisrael in their hearts.

The revealed testimony of the Mikdash is contingent on Bnei Yisrael's deeds and the purity of their hearts.

And according to the degree they merit to be pure of heart (barei levav), so are they able to bring this form into revelation.

The purer their hearts, the more fully they can manifest the Divine pattern openly in the world.

And this itself is testimony also about Bnei Yisrael, that the revelation of holiness in the world is according to their avodah.

The link between their service and the revelation of holiness is itself a testimony to the unique role of Bnei Yisrael.

And in truth, we have reason to lament the destruction of the Bais Hamikdash.

The loss of the Mikdash is a genuine cause for mourning.

As it is said, that it was "taken as a pledge (nismashken)" because of our sins.

The word "Mishkan" is read as "mashkon," a pledge: the Mikdash was, as it were, given over as a security on account of our sins.

The explanation: this form and testimony cannot be in a revealed state because of the darkness of our sins, as it is said, "I call as witnesses against you the Sanctuary (birah) that returned to the earlier ones but did not return to the later ones"; see there, in the first chapter of Yoma.

The darkness of sin prevents the Divine pattern from being openly revealed, which is why the Mikdash, restored to earlier generations, was not restored to the later ones.

But in their inner depths (penimiyus) and root, Bnei Yisrael are forever witnesses to the Holy One, blessed is He.

Even when outward testimony is concealed, the inner essence of Bnei Yisrael remains an eternal, unbroken witness to Hashem.

And this is the testimony of Shabbos, which was given to Bnei Yisrael in concealment (b'tzin'a), as it is said, "between Me and the Bnei Yisrael it is a sign forever."

Shabbos is the hidden, private testimony — a sign "between Me and you" — that remains even when the public testimony of the Mikdash is gone.

And this is the aspect of "Mi" in the concealed root.

Shabbos belongs to the hidden "Mi," the concealed dimension.

But "Eileh" is in the revealed, and in the time to come the two will again be joined, as it is said, "Who are these (mi eileh) that fly like a cloud."

The Mikdash is the revealed "Eileh." In the future, the hidden "Mi" and the revealed "Eileh" will reunite — "Mi-Eileh" — in complete redemption.

And as it is written, "I said, you are godly beings (elohim atem)…" (Tehillim 82:6).

The future union of Mi and Eileh — spelling "Elokim" — corresponds to the elevation of Bnei Yisrael themselves.

And the aspect of Shabbos is above the aspect of the Mishkan.

Shabbos, the hidden inner testimony, stands higher than the revealed testimony of the Mishkan.

And behold, it is brought in the Midrash on "These are the accountings of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of testimony": that Moshe Rabbeinu asked what should be done with the surplus (mosar), and the Holy One, blessed is He, said to him, "Make a Mishkan for testimony" — and this is the meaning of "the Mishkan, the Mishkan of testimony."

The Midrash relates that there was leftover material from the donations; Hashem told Moshe to make of it a "Mishkan of testimony" — a second naming that the Sefas Emes will now explain.

And I heard from my grandfather, of blessed memory, who explained the matter: that this surplus donation, from which no building was made — therefore this surplus remains for all generations. Even when there is no Mikdash, nevertheless the will and the donation of Bnei Yisrael endures forever, as he said regarding the Chanukah lights; see there.

The Sefas Emes cites his grandfather (the Chiddushei HaRim): because the surplus was never built into a structure, it represents the pure will and devotion of Bnei Yisrael, which endures forever even without a standing Mikdash — like the eternal light of Chanukah.

And according to our approach we may say, based on what is brought in the Mishnah: any love that is dependent on a particular thing — when that thing ceases, the love ceases; but a love that is not dependent on anything never ceases.

The Sefas Emes applies the Mishnah's distinction between conditional and unconditional love to the surplus material and the bond between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem.

And likewise the love of Bnei Yisrael for the Holy One, blessed is He, is not dependent on anything.

The bond between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem is an unconditional love that nothing can dissolve.

And this is the meaning of the verse, "I have loved you, says Hashem, but you say, 'In what way have You loved us?' Was not Eisav a brother to Yaakov… yet I loved Yaakov…" (Malachi 1:2).

The prophet records Hashem's declaration of love and Israel's question, "In what did You show it?" — answered by the contrast between Yaakov and Eisav.

And the answer to the question "in what way have You loved us?" is not understood.

On the surface, pointing to Yaakov over Eisav does not seem to answer the question of how Hashem's love was shown.

But the explanation is that the love is not dependent on anything; rather it is a decree of the verse, like the natural bond of a father to a son. And were it dependent on the righteousness of Yaakov, there would be no indication of greater love for Yaakov than for Eisav.

The very point is that Hashem's love is unconditional — like a father's innate love for his child. Had it depended on Yaakov's merit, it would not prove special love, since Eisav too could have earned it. Its independence of any cause is precisely the proof of its depth.

Rather, it is an essential love (ahavah b'etzem).

It is love at the level of essence — intrinsic and unconditioned.

And likewise the love of Bnei Yisrael for the Holy One, blessed is He, is essential; therefore there was a surplus in the donation of the Mishkan.

Because the love is essential and unconditional, it overflowed beyond what any structure required — hence the leftover material.

For although this building of the Mishkan was of a very high and exalted level —

The Mishkan itself was an extraordinarily lofty structure.

— yet the donation of Bnei Yisrael is above every thing, and is not dependent on anything, nor on any building.

The devotion of Bnei Yisrael transcends even the Mishkan; it is not bound to any particular structure.

Indeed, the verse called it "surplus (mosar)."

The very fact that there was a "surplus" expresses devotion that exceeds and is unbound by the building.

And this is the matter of the neshamah yeseirah (extra soul) on Shabbos.

The "surplus" of devotion parallels the extra soul of Shabbos — both are a free, additional gift beyond the ordinary.

For during all the weekdays the love is dependent on a thing — according to the avodah of man in the practical mitzvos.

On weekdays the relationship is mediated by, and conditional upon, one's active performance of mitzvos.

But on Shabbos there is a "good gift," and all activities cease — which is a sign of a love that is not dependent on anything.

On Shabbos, when all work stops, the bond is no longer based on what one does; it is the pure, unconditional love symbolized by Shabbos as a "good gift."

Therefore the love of the Mishkan does not endure permanently, only according to the merit of the generation.

The revealed bond of the Mishkan is conditional on the generation's worthiness, and so it can lapse.

But the testimony of Shabbos is the aspect of the neshamah yeseirah, which is not dependent on anything, as stated.

Shabbos, like the unconditional love it represents, is an enduring testimony that no sin or loss can cancel — the inner, unbreakable bond between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem.

Summary: The "Mishkan of testimony" attests that Hashem forgave the Golden Calf, a sin in the realm of the revealed "Eileh" (action), which the Mishkan repaired. Creation testifies to Hashem through space, time, and soul, with the testimony of "nefesh" — speech and the letters of Torah — entrusted to Bnei Yisrael. Yet the revealed testimony of the Mikdash is conditional on the generation's merit and can be lost, like a love dependent on a thing. The hidden testimony of Shabbos, by contrast, mirrors the surplus donation and the neshamah yeseirah: it expresses the essential, unconditional love between Bnei Yisrael and Hashem, an inner bond that endures forever.
