In the Midrash on "Go forth and see [the daughters of Tzion]… the crown with which his mother crowned him" (Shir HaShirim 3:11): He did not cease cherishing her until He called her "My sister"… "My mother"…

The Midrash traces a progression in Hashem's love for Bnei Yisrael through escalating terms of endearment — "daughter," "sister," "mother" — which the Sefas Emes will map onto stages of the nation's spiritual growth.

The matter is that at Yetzias Mitzrayim, Bnei Yisrael became vessels (keilim) for the service of Hashem Yisbarach, and this is the aspect of "My daughter" (biti).

The Exodus made Bnei Yisrael fit "vessels" to receive and serve Hashem — the first and most basic stage, like a daughter receiving from her father.

Afterward, at Kabbalas HaTorah, it is the aspect of "My sister" (achosi), as Chazal said that they became "whole" (nis'tamemu) at Sinai and declared, "All that Hashem has spoken we will do" (Shemos 24:7).

Receiving the Torah and committing to "na'aseh" lifted Bnei Yisrael to wholeness — a closer, more equal bond, like a sister rather than merely a daughter.

And after the cheit (of the golden calf), when they did teshuvah — and Chazal said: "In the place where ba'alei teshuvah stand, complete tzaddikim cannot stand."

Their teshuvah after the sin raised them even higher than the unblemished righteous, opening a new and loftier path.

And the reason is that through teshuvah a new path is forged.

Teshuvah does not merely restore what was lost; it creates an entirely new avenue of connection to Hashem.

How much more so when Klal Yisrael as a whole did teshuvah, they drew down a new flow from the Ein Sof (the Infinite).

The collective teshuvah of the nation drew an unprecedented illumination from the Infinite Source.

And this is the aspect of the Mishkan — "the crown with which his mother crowned him."

The Mishkan, built after the teshuvah for the calf, embodies the highest stage, "mother" — the new flow drawn down through teshuvah.

And all these paths are always present within Bnei Yisrael.

These three stages — daughter, sister, mother — are not just historical events but enduring dimensions within every Jew.

And they are the aspect of the three festivals: Pesach, Shavuos, and Sukkos.

The three Regalim correspond to these three stages of relationship with Hashem.

And Shabbos includes all three of these.

Shabbos contains and unifies all three stages within itself.

"Shabbos" — read as "shin-bas" (the letter shin, which has three prongs, plus bas, "daughter") — alludes to the three levels of the "daughter."

The very word Shabbos hints at the three-pronged shin joined to "bas," signaling the three gradations of the bond.

The Shabbos of Bereishis (Creation) and Yetzias Mitzrayim is the aspect of "My daughter."

The Shabbos commemorating Creation and the Exodus corresponds to the first stage, "daughter."

The Shabbos of Kabbalas HaTorah is "My sister."

Shabbos as it relates to the giving of the Torah corresponds to the second stage, "sister."

The Shabbos that alludes to "the day that is entirely Shabbos" (the World to Come) is the aspect of "My mother" — [the level of] the ba'al teshuvah.

The future, all-encompassing Shabbos corresponds to "mother," the loftiest stage, attained through the new path of teshuvah.

For in truth, in the future all the blemishes caused by sins will be rectified.

The ultimate future will heal every flaw produced by sin.

And there will be a new path.

That future tikkun will open a wholly new road of closeness to Hashem.

And all ba'alei teshuvah have a portion of this future path.

Whoever does teshuvah already tastes, in the present, something of that new future path.

And concerning these three it is written, "May the pleasantness of Hashem [our God be upon us]" (Tehillim 90:17) — this is the aspect of "My daughter," that HaKadosh Baruch Hu will pour upon us daas to serve Him.

"Vihi noam" — the opening request — corresponds to the "daughter" stage, asking Hashem to grant us the knowledge needed to serve Him.

"And establish the work of our hands upon us" is the aspect of "My sister," that we should merit through our own deeds.

The next phrase corresponds to "sister" — the stage where Bnei Yisrael actively contribute through their own deeds.

"The work of our hands — establish it" — it is brought in the kavanos of the Arizal that this is the aspect of the rectification of the blemishes — see there, that it is as stated.

The repeated phrase "establish it" alludes, per the Arizal, to repairing the blemishes of sin — the dimension of teshuvah.

And this means that a new path is drawn down through the rectification of the sin.

Repairing the sin draws down the new path — the "mother" stage of teshuvah.

And therefore it is brought that Moshe blessed them with the blessing of "Vihi noam," for the building of the Mishkan was through the power of teshuvah, as above.

Moshe blessed the people with "Vihi noam" upon completing the Mishkan precisely because the Mishkan itself was built on the strength of their teshuvah after the calf.

Summary: Hashem's deepening love for Bnei Yisrael unfolds in three stages — "daughter" (becoming vessels at Yetzias Mitzrayim), "sister" (wholeness at Kabbalas HaTorah), and "mother" (the new, higher path opened by teshuvah, crowning the Mishkan). These correspond to the three Regalim, all contained in Shabbos (hinted in "shin-bas"), and to the phrases of "Vihi noam." Because teshuvah forges an entirely new road drawn from the Ein Sof, the ba'al teshuvah surpasses even the complete tzaddik and tastes the future "day that is wholly Shabbos."
