Bnei Yisrael's testimony reveals the Shechinah

In the Midrash Tanchuma: "I love the dwelling of Your house" (Tehillim 26:8) — see there.

The piece opens with the verse expressing love for Hashem's "dwelling," which the Sefas Emes will tie to the Mishkan ha'Edus, the Tabernacle of Testimony.

For it is written, "Hashem made everything for His own sake (lema'anehu)" (Mishlei 16:4) — Chazal expounded "lema'anehu" as "for His testimony (le'eiduso)," like "Testify against me (aneh bi)," from the expression "Do not bear false witness (lo sa'aneh) against your fellow" (Shemos 20:13).

Chazal read the word "lema'anehu" not only as "for His sake" but as related to "eidus," testimony — Hashem made all things so that they would bear witness to Him.

It is also possible to explain it as "for His dwelling (lema'ono)," as it is stated: from the very beginning the Holy One desired to have a dwelling in the lower worlds — and this dwelling and abode is by the power of the testimony of Bnei Yisrael.

The same word can be read as "His dwelling": Hashem's age-old desire for a dirah b'tachtonim (a home in the lower world) is realized specifically through the testimony that Bnei Yisrael bear to Him.

Therefore it is called the "Mishkan ha'Edus" (Tabernacle of Testimony).

The Mishkan's very name expresses that it is built upon, and is the place of, this testimony.

For according to the testimony, so the Shechinah is revealed in the world.

The measure of the testimony Bnei Yisrael bear determines the measure to which the Shechinah becomes manifest.

As it is written, "You are My witnesses... and I am God" (Yeshayahu 43:12) — and Chazal expounded that the revelation of His Godliness depends upon this testimony.

Chazal read the verse to mean that when Bnei Yisrael are Hashem's witnesses, He is, as it were, "God"; the revelation of His sovereignty in the world hinges on their testimony.

For it is written, "He established a testimony in Yaakov" (Tehillim 78:5). Now, it is written, "By the mouth of two witnesses... a matter shall be established (yakum)" (Devarim 19:15), and witnesses are called "those who establish the matter (mekaymei ha'davar)," as stated in Maseches Makkos.

The root meaning of "eidus" is establishment: just as two witnesses "establish" a legal matter, Bnei Yisrael's testimony "establishes" and sustains the reality of Hashem's presence — they are the "mekaymei ha'davar."

And this is what Chazal said: "to give reward to the tzaddikim who sustain (mekaymin) the world that was created with ten utterances" — for through the testimony of Bnei Yisrael the world is sustained.

The tzaddikim "sustain" the world precisely as witnesses do: by bearing testimony to Hashem, Bnei Yisrael keep the entire creation in existence.

And in every place where there is testimony, there is a revelation of the Shechinah. And the hint is what Chazal wrote: testimony is not accepted except in the presence of the litigant (ba'al din) — "let the owner of the ox come and stand by his ox."

Just as in court witnesses may only testify before the party concerned, so testimony to Hashem can only be borne "in His presence" — and wherever such testimony is given, the Shechinah is revealed and present.

And there is testimony in [the three dimensions of] world (olam — space), year (shanah — time), and soul (nefesh).

Using the classic framework of olam, shanah, nefesh — space, time, and self — the Sefas Emes identifies one bearer of testimony in each domain.

"You are My witnesses" — in the aspect of nefesh (soul).

In the dimension of the self, Bnei Yisrael are the witnesses.

Shabbos is called "testimony (sahadusa)" — in [the dimension of] time.

In the dimension of time, Shabbos is the witness to Hashem as Creator.

The Mishkan ha'Edus [in place] — for in truth the Holy One created nature and time, and He is exalted and lofty above all of this.

In the dimension of place, the Mishkan is the witness. Hashem Himself created nature and time yet utterly transcends them, infinitely beyond His creation.

But by means of an inner point (nekudah penimiyus) found in world, year, and soul — which is spirituality.

Within each of the three dimensions there exists a single concentrated spiritual point — a "nekudah penimiyus" — that is purely ruchniyus amid the physical.

This point is testimony for all the rest.

That inner point — Bnei Yisrael, Shabbos, the Mishkan — bears witness on behalf of its entire domain, attesting that the whole was created by Hashem.

Like the matter Chazal stated: a thing that was included in a general category and then went out from the category to teach — it came out not to teach about itself alone, but to teach about the entire category.

The Sefas Emes applies a hermeneutical principle: when something is singled out of a group, it is in order to illuminate the whole group, not merely itself.

And Bnei Yisrael went out from the category.

Bnei Yisrael were singled out from among the nations — not for themselves alone, but to teach about all of mankind and creation.

And even within Bnei Yisrael themselves there are great tzaddikim who came to teach about the entire category.

The same principle operates internally: outstanding tzaddikim are "singled out" within Bnei Yisrael to draw down and reveal the holiness latent in the whole nation.

And likewise Shabbos went out from the category of time, to teach about all of time.

Shabbos was set apart from the week not merely as one holy day, but to reveal that all time belongs to and testifies to Hashem.

And likewise the Mishkan and the Bais Hamikdash, to teach about all places, as above.

So too the Mishkan and Mikdash were singled out among all locations in order to teach that every place is, in truth, a dwelling for the Shechinah.

Summary: Hashem made everything "lema'anehu" — for His testimony and for His dwelling, fulfilling His age-old desire for a dirah b'tachtonim, a home in the lower world, realized through the testimony Bnei Yisrael bear to Him. Witnesses "establish" a matter, and so Bnei Yisrael, like the tzaddikim, sustain creation by testifying to Hashem; wherever such testimony is borne, the Shechinah is revealed. Across the three dimensions of olam, shanah, nefesh — space, time, and soul — there is a concentrated inner point of spirituality that bears witness for its whole domain: the Mishkan ha'Edus in place, Shabbos in time, and Bnei Yisrael in soul. Each was singled out of its category, by the rule of "yatza min haklal," not for itself but to reveal that all of creation testifies to its Creator.
